Fender did such a great job getting the vibe of this guitar right. Nitro Finish, Thick U Neck, an amazing flat-pole pickup. They sent me the guitar to check out and to do a comparison video between it and my original 58 Esquire, but when it got here I decided to do this extra video just checking it out :).

Just an idea... with my personal recommendations as examples 5 guitars beginners should *try* before buying a guitar: 1) Any acoustic. This is to experience the string tension to compare to electric guitars. 2) stratocaster style. This is the design most non-guitarists think of when discussing electric guitar. 🎸 theyre versatile, and comfortable. Bright and bouncy sound. 2) les paul style. They're heavier, slightly harder to fret high notes, and sound amazing. They tend to be tonally darker and heavier. 3) any very high end guitar. This shows you what a good instrument should feel like. You don't need to spend $2000 to find a guitar that plays like a million. But until you've played a high quality instrument its easy to assume *all* guitars play the way entry level guitars do. 4) a 3/4 scale guitar (ibanez mikro). The shorter scale reduces the string tension, and reduces the distance between frets. Together this makes it far easier to play. Even people who have played for years should try a short scale guitar. They're very fun. 5) a freinds guitar. I know that seems like an obvious cop out, but its more important than people realize. If you can get anyone to show you how to strum even a single chord, youre more likely to buy a guitar you'll be happy with. Knowing how to hold the neck will help you find a neck thats comfortable for you in the long run.

I just bought one of these in Lake Placid Blue. I was nervous about it when they were first out, but recently realized they have the very rare spec of of nitro neck, as well as a nitro body. A nitro maple neck should start to show that awesome wear on the fretboard with playing. Your video is great- excellent comments and detail, and especially your obvious love and enthusiasm for the guitar and the tradition of excellence it represents

You mentioned that this Esquire's "neck" tone is more usable than your old Esquire's. Capacitors age, which can significantly change their value and thus their effect on the guitar's tone. I don't know how stock you want your old Esquire to remain, but regardless it's worth measuring both guitars' capacitors (most multimeters these days can do that). Those capacitor values are probably very different, and swapping in one to your old guitar that matches the new one may fix the neck tone, as well as restore its original electronic specs.

Tom Ball Spot on, and full of increasingly rare logic, nice one :). Just keep the old caps for authenticity.
@TinIndian1968
@TinIndian1968 4 жыл бұрын
Beat me to it. That's exactly whats happened. The original Caps have drifted value wise over the years. I think if it's me and the original wiring has never been touched I'd leave it as is. If the wiring has been soldered on already I'd go ahead and change it and keep the original(s) in a bag with the guitar.

I've tried explaining this to guys in regard to amps, because a lot of guys who played through late 60s Marshalls just dimed all the controls: Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Kossoff, etc. And a guy on the Les Paul Forum argued with me over and over because he said you can't turn up the bass on a 60s Marshall, its mud city. I couldn't beat it into his skull that we're talking about brand new amps in the 60s vs those amps now. By comparison i applied those setting to a brand new hand-wired reissue clone of a JTM45/100 with a les paul plugged straight in and it sounded perfect.

A friends father had a 1955 Esquire, looked just like your 58, same color, white guard. He bought it new and by the time I saw it for the 1st time around 1980 the color had gone to that buttercream type color and had finish checking all over. Just gorgeous! He even had kept the original strings in a package in the case. He sold it to Gruhns sometime back in the 90's.

I think the biggest reason why the tale is so versatile is bc these were designed to play anything with just the one pickup. Once you add the neck pickup it rly just makes it easier to access tones lending to enhanced versatility. Also esquires and a fuzz pedal have to be one of the biggest tone secrets there is. No one uses them anymore but youre really getting into some lp territory when you combine the two.

In the 3rd position the tone knob is bypassed like in the 1st position, but the pickup is routed through a treble roll off resistor. That is why it has that dark tone. In many ways it is the opposite of the 1st position. Leo added it so those western swing guys could use it like a bass. Needless to say, many players didn't like it and rewired their Esquire with a capacitor for the 3rd position so when you used the volume control it would have wah effect. Which was more useful for rock and standard country playing.

I got a reissued 68 Gibson Les Paul in the early 2000s. What I liked about it was they made the pickups looked tarnished. The pickup guard missing a couple of connectors and the pickup selector switch had an optional(and I used it) browned out(instead of white) cover. So it looked like I had the guitar since 68. I wish the case came beat up as well.

It's *almost* the original specs. There are a few very minor differences: 1/ This has 6105-size frets (tall/thin), not vintage 2/ As mentioned in the video, the capacitor engaged in the third "dark" position seems to be different and a lot more usuable and practical than the original Esquires, where that position was only really useful for dance-band style "pump" chords. 3/ The pickup is based on one particular Esquire's pickup they found in the wild at the Songbird Museum.

I have an affinity for Esquire guitars... I have 2 mint condition 2003 Fender MIK Espire Celtic Telecasters that I have modernized with SD hums & wiring. I wish I could afford one of these USA Fender 70th Esquires to add to the collection. If I could, that would be the pride of my collection until I win the lottery (not likely 🤣), and buy a REAL vintage 50's Esquire.
