I’ve had Ridgebacks for over 30 years. Most of them have been rescues because of the idiots who bought them as pups but did no research on the breed. Ridgies are the wonderful but they are not for the novice, they are highly intelligent, obedient if trained properly, they are also funny and have a great sense of fun. In my opinion they are the best breed in the world. I adore Ridgies ♥️

My Rhodesian Ridgeback just turned 10 years old, up until a few months ago we walked 3-4 miles 5 days a week and hiked 7-8 miles every Saturday and Sunday….at his prime he was 160 lbs, he’s probably 130 lbs right now, the tallest Ridgeback I’ve ever seen, he is a true champion, I miss our long walks (and talks), I feel guilty going hiking on my own, I love this guy, what a pity they grow old so quickly, to new puppy owners, love them, train them, talk to them, treat them like one of your own kids, spend as much time as you can with them, they will love you unconditionally and to have these wonderful dogs as a part of your family is a privilege….would I get another Ridgeback…….Hell yes !!!!

That is WAY too big for a Ridgeback, he is most definitely overwieght, even if he is way over the breed standard in terms of size. My female is at the top of the breed standard for females in terms of both height and weight (she is not overweight at all) and people would say "she looks small for a Ridgeback" because people are breeding these monster Ridgebacks way above breed standard. A male should be under 100 lbs, ideally around 85 lbs. My bitch hovers between 75 and 80 lbs.

You discovered the laziness. I swear their favorite thing is air conditioning. I have used crates and used to think they hated being in their crate. I take them outside and all they want to do is go back in the house. Unless it's spring or fall and it's not too hot or too cold. But just right.

I'm the exact same! I got my RR in college, and he's definitely a couch potato lol. And he's only 2 1/2 so I guess he just has an old soul lol. That being said, he literally just rolls in the dirt and then flops over for a nap while all the dogs run around him and he sunbathes lmao

Hi I've had these all my life. Since I was in the 4th grade in the 70's. My mom is still a regional coordinator for Ridgeback Rescue in the USA. They are the best dog ever, but... You really need to take your time getting one for the first time. Even if you have had other dogs go to a bunch of dog shows, visit SEVERAL reputable breeders, get a Crate, and plan on obedience training. Once you have one or two it's easy. I just placed one with my sister and he fit right in, but we knew what we had. He fell in love with the girls day one. Of course we are a family that lets dogs sleep on the bed so now he is spoiled.

I used hand-signals with my rhodesian as well and I noticed it helped so much when she was younger. Everytime she would start to throw a fit or get too excited the hand hesture would calm her down and she would be so attentive. She "listens" more to the silent gestures now than the vocal commands, which is great because it means she's looking at me. :) Her only quirk is that she howls when the sun comes up. lol. Good thing I'm an early riser!

@@BeckyGard Yeah, I gave up trying to train mine not to bark at the squirrels hanging out in the trees outside my windows after a year or two of frustration. I realized it was just what she was breed to do (ie hyper territorial and alert to animal intruders). Now I block the bottom half of the windows with blank painting canvases when its squirrel season. As for walks, a thick rope slip-lead works and being hyper-vigilant with noticing things before she does so I can prepare for the lunge or distract away from the squirrel/cat/whatever. Mine isn't the smartest dog, lol, thankfully she doesn't open doors. She is the sweetest dog without being clingy though. Many people say she is the friendliest/most social Ridgeback they've met. :)

I believe I have a mini version of one; She has all the markings that of a Ridgeback but with a miniature Pinscher facial features. She was labeled as a standard Dachshund from a shelter here in Las Vegas. I adopted her back in August of 2022 and she weighed at that time 17.0lbs. Today, she is 30lbs and would consider her as a Medium sized dog rather than labeled as a 'small' one. She is quite challenging, but I have learned as when walking her and my other dog (chug) that I am there to simply guide them and make sure their leash lines don't get entangled with each other. She is pretty self willed as you mentioned, but attentive to me at the same time when needed. The two basically get along with each other; they gripe about toys and Sophia plays tricks on NaOmi to retrieve her toy that she had, but was taken from NaOmi to get her toy back. (LOL as watching them play with each other). Sophia is also a foodie and why I measure her food at each feeding so she does not become overweight. Homemade dogfood way better than pet store wet can food!!!! She is a joy and very strong! I plan to take the two camping with me very soon. :)

I've come across so many that I thought were Ridgeback mutts at the popular dog park I go to and every time I ask they tell me "that's what I thought too but we had her tested and she's not." I've only seen one actual Ridgeback mutt and it was all black with a ridge; a lab and ridgeback cross. Get her genetically tested but prepare for disappointment (or rejoice since breeding mutts reveals a lack of responsibility on the part of dog owners). Given the rarity of the breed and how expensive they are, most ridgeback owners do not let their dogs cross-breed and are more responsible than lower-cost pure bred owners (eg labs, sheperds, pitties, etc).

Hi, first off I love the videos you produce on all the dog breeds. I am considering getting a RIdgeback. I grew up owning dogs such as a pitbull, pitbull/rot mix and german shephard . All of which I've enjoyed but my favorite was my pit/rotty mix. She was perfect with my daughter and they grew up together and she was great with kids even off-leash. My dogs definitely knew I was the alpha in the house. Funny is whenever I've had a few choice words for them they would hide behind my wife, mom or daughter and seem to start mumbling as if telling me "hey I didn't do anything...hahaha!" I used to be extremely active because I was a competitive fighter and competitive runner but at the age of 53 not so active but still way more active than most men my age. The only concern I have is if Ridgebacks get along with smaller dogs since I do not have any freal world experience with this breed. I mainly am interested in the Ridgeback because I believe since they are dogs from a hot weather region, a ridgeback would do great where I live now which is Phoenix, Arizona where the average weather is in the mid 70's to the high 80's and sometimes low 90's but summers are easily 100+ up to almost 115 from my experience. Would you recommend this type of breed for me? I've always been loving with my dogs in the past but have always kept a very watchful eye on their behavior and reactions and am quick to make corrections but at the same time respect their natural tendencies being dogs. Other type I am considering is a doberman but leaning more towards the Ridgeback. Any thoughts?

Makenzie. Don't go by that. I have a saying. the worst thing that can happen to a dog is he becomes a toughguy's dog. Toughguys with dogs like that are usually irresponsible and unsuccessful on many levels. The Ridgeback has become somewhat of a toughguys dog. It's bad enough when one knuckle head has one dog he messes up. It's the worst when a whole breed becomes a toughguy's dog. Thus all of the Pit Bulls crossed with Ridgeback. The Pit Bull is the poster child for mistreated toughguy dogs. SOOOOO many in rescues. Go see a dog show put on by an AKC club and talk to an owner or handler. But be careful. Doing this very thing 35 years ago caused a pretty big addiction in my family. Cheers

We take ours for long bush walks off the leash and this is where I see him in all his glory. Never use domination or physical discipline with this breed as they will become scared and scarred. They learn through treats, play and a confident owner. If there is a situation where you can't control them then make sure you avoid it. Ours has been a struggle on the leash but the Halti has saved us from being pulled to death. Not a fierce protector at all they ate big old softies. I grew up with boerboels and they ate fierce and protective let me tell you that.

@@anatolyalperovich9069 do you have the ticks they give humans a red meat allergy? 2 of my neighbours now can't eat red meat after tick bites.

@@pineyridge7465 i have heard of it. But had no experience or know any case of it. They tell it is a newly recently mutated star tick. In south USA . I have no idea, what the biochemical path could be. Besides that to call it an allergy , the triglyceride phospholipase must be involved . I think

Virtually every video I see has these RR mouthing each other and other dogs. It seems to be playing, not aggression. My question is, Are they like a short hair Malinois? or do they have a completely different attitude? I was a kid raised by RR, but that was 60 years ago.

I had 4 male ridgebacks all at once and 2 of them are still alive. I had one of the 4 pass lately he was alpha male. I’m alpha female. I have no problem with them ,they listen to me. I had other ridgeback owners come to my property (73) acres for walks, they expressed that they wished their dogs were like mine. I’m with them all the time, we are a pack. I think they are the best dog breed out there for me. I have had all of them since they were 9 weeks old.

There are people who have owned several dogs and still suck as owners. Just do a bit of research.

I'd say the stereotype people have is not about the breed... It's the owners. There's so many shit owners.

Weak and fearful is not what they're supposed to be. If you think it's common enough that it's worth mentioning as if it's common, then that's a real problem in the breed. I knew one breeder who thought they were getting too soft. She may have had a point.

I had a friend who owned an African ridgeback, here is what the narrator missed. Down the back of the dog, the hair grows in the opposite direction, it is about four inches wide. The temperament of the dog is very unpredictable likened to a pit bull. It is a one-owner dog. It is used for hunting LIONS. My friend sold her ridgeback to a young couple, big mistake, the dog killed the baby of that family. My advice is not to own these screwed-up dogs unless you are hunting lions.

What can we say????!!!! The Rodhesian should be well bread. and furthermore well educated. Without this they are loose ... Don't ever, ever, ever give this dog a house to people who don't know the bread. They are the most sweetisch dogs I ever had.
