SAF is the most intelligence football manager in the world, bar none. He knows exactly what he is doing. It's not just about experience n knowledge, which LVG has in large quantity, but the intelligence to figure out what's really going and what you can get out of it. I have never seen a better manager at that. As you can see here, he's resting big players like Scholes n Ferdinand despite it being a UCL night, the 2nd most important competition. While LVG plays his full strength team like BFS and Rooney for a league cup match against Ipswich, making those key players tired and he even admit it himself, that the players are now tired after the Wolfsburg game.
