Ferguson TED20 input shaft oil seal replacement Part 1

Hi all
After 70 years the Fergies input shaft seal has finally given up
I thought it was a good idea to do some short videos on replacing the seal and want parts need to be removed to gain access to the work seal

Hi got a petrol paraffin fergy , clutch as been bit difficult lately but yesterday when in 4 th gear on road started making a banging noise from clutch area any ideas? Thanks.

Great job. You said it was an oil leak that make you suspicious the input shaft seal was failing. Was the tractor driving an different? Did it feel like the clutch was slipping?

The tractor drove the same as it has always done and the clutch wasn’t slipping The major change was when you switched the engine off or parked on a hill with the front facing down the drain hole in the bell housing had oil pouring out of it and it was transmission oil coloured the vast quantity of oil meant it most likely came from the input shaft seal

Cool thanks. I have a MF 698 non multi power, when driving sometimes it starting to appear the clutch is slipping but when you test the clutch e.g put it in 1st gear let up the clutch and press brake she cuts out straight away. A mechanic suggested it might be the input shaft seal cause the clutch to get wet.

Yeah that would be a good start if it is oil contaminating the clutch it would either be from the transmission or a leaking rear crankshaft oil seal

How long would it take to split the tractor for a first-timer?

A few hours to an afternoon nothing that complex really just finding and removing bolts, wiring and linkages all of which are easy to see and access

@@tractionengine11 Thanks! I'm considering a TO-30 that needs the rear main seal replaced. Looks like a $10 part but a daunting effort.

Christian Rogers no problem. I agree it is a lot of work for the price of the part which doesn’t take long to fit. As long as you have the gearbox supported and a way of rolling the front end forward safely it is a enjoyable job to do
