Thanks for making the video... I found that lowering the engine cradle was excessive and unnecessary, but dropping the tie-rod definitely helped make some room in this very tight space. I replaced the 17 year-old original Motorcraft alternator in April with an Autozone reman because I needed to get the car back on the road in one day. Just my luck, that Autozone alternator lasted less than 5 months and it's died on me so I am having to do this job again! Ugh! Word of advice...do NOT make the same mistake I did, buy a better quality alternator or you'll be doing this job several times 😡

I seen your video.best one ever and it's true what he says. But you don't need to take the tie rod off. The old one and new one went in great without taking the tie rod off. Good video to get all your information.

Helpful video, just got done doing it myself today, the engineer behind this abomination should be tarred, feathered and publicly flogged. I did mine on the ground with a jack and jack stands. Mine came out without removing the tie rod or doing the subframe drop, that wasn't the hard part for me. The worst thing was installation, getting the threads started while holding the weight of the alternator in that tight space. I put one of the studs separated from the nut on the top and sort of hung it on that one so it wasn't as hard to hold it in position getting the bottom ones threaded. The other PITA was getting that 10mm electrical connection off, I ended up doing this after the alternator was unbolted and rotated it around so I could see what I was doing. Also had to buy a serpentine tool because none of my ratchets would fit in that space.

This can be done as a one person job. When it's time to slip the belt on/off just face your ratchet or belt tool upwards through the engine bay. Theres just enough room to slip a breaker bar down over your ratchet (assuming you have the car on stands and can still reach into the engine bay) I was able to pull the tensioner back and reach the belt with my other hand all in one motion. Definitely easier if you got a friend to help rather then having your arms spread-eagle grabbing the bar and moving the belt at the same time but hey it can be done! Good luck out there!

I just did this job on the ground take the wheel off drop the tie rod turn the suspension out of ur way take the brake line bracket off it gives you a little more room take the belt loose from the top take ur hardware off the Alternator just about falls out I did it in 30 minutes with hand tools I've probably done 15 of these

On my 06 Freestyle (the 'suv version' of the 500) you don't have to drop the subframe at all. That was a happy surprise.

Little trick use a belt tool from the top and zip tie it to the cross brace.

I did this repair today. I did NOT have to remove the tie rod. I cranked the wheel fully toward the RIGHT (pass side). the alternator dropped out after 3 bolts (one top and 2 lower).
