I'm a newer subscriber who found your channel when I needed to replace my brakes and rotors on my 2014 Civic Si. I even went out and bought new tools so I could be more self reliant doing maintenance as a delivery driver because of you (torque wrench, breaker bar, wire brush, various lubricants, etc). I've seen a lot of your more recent videos (LOVED the Prius battery video since I got that to be my work vehicle - 2012 Prius THREE) with the higher production quality and I gotta say you've definitely come a long way in how you create these videos. The level of instructional detail, the confidence, filming/editing, etc. You have mastered your craft, and I'm so happy for you. And even with this being a 7 year old video, I still feel like I got enough information that I could do this job myself if I ever needed to replace my alternator. Keep up the good work, and thank you for being an incredible teacher.

Ok, put a new alternator on a 1987 Nissan truck, now all the lights, gauges and fan motor don’t work but engine runs fine. No blown fuses. The only electrical item that works are the wipers. Any guesses?
@jogmas124 жыл бұрын
@Arturo Blanco I put a duralast from autozone but what really happened was I switched the battery and ground connections on the back of the alternator and blew a fuse link. It’s ok now, I put a new fuse link. The only thing that does not work is only the temperature gauge. But I put in an after market temp gauge.

Hi Chris! I've been learning about car maintenance through your channel. Your videos are very informative. Thanks for that. Anyways..... i've been driving manual cars for 15years and this is my first time to own an automatic. Last week i had a dead battery. Got stranded for hours. Now, i wanted to install a second battery in my car. Maybe to power my laptop and for audio players. I just hope it works like parallel connections, but i think it's much complex than that. And if maybe you could guide me on this... another youtube vid would be great. Thanks in advance. More power.

I just did this on our '95 and you could have removed it by removing the long and short side bolts which hold the alternator directly without needing to remove the bracket bolts that you took off. Once you remove the long and short bolt, the alt drops maybe 1/16" which isn't much at all, and doesn't hurt anything. At that point, slide it forward under the bracket, lift the long bolt side and pull out. Easy peasy. That said, thanks for the video, I was having issues with the tension pulley.

Motivated by relative ease of TESTING my alternator in 74 Javelin; set about to replace it. Thanks Chris, I probably would not have done this save for your vid. Process of loosening bolts after decades was, um, interesting. Friend told me about PB Blaster; and alternative to WD40 (old standby). WOW! If you're not familiar with it; check it out. Anyway, got that final bolt out. We trade a lot at OReilly Auto Parts. But three faulty Alternators into it; we went to the local NAPA store. They source rebuilt Alternators from a company who bench tests; and in fact NAPA bench tested while we watched. Bad news for OAP I think... So NAPA sourced alternator is in place; bought some new bolts rather than fight with that 41 year old bolt putting it back in; and all is well. Mostly Chris, know that I might not have dug in without your video. Thanks!

I'm so glad you have an alternator video for the side engine... I put Blue Devil Stop Leak (for head gasket and coolant leaks...I think my water pump is leaking and I couldn't get a mechanic to change it...money issues).. as it was idling the alternator went out. Would you buy another alternator (put more money in it) and hope the permanent stop leak works or just junk the car Chris? Help!

So this is a transverse engine set up. Are there transverse set ups where the crank is on the other side? And dont you have to unhook the battery before taking the positive connector off the alternator? If it touches something it can short, no?

The one thing about Fords, and probably all vehicles, is that if you have a tool you probably want or couldn't live without, be careful in the engine bay because at times if you drop it, it's gone, it goes to one of those places that no tool can find.

Chris how much does a mechanic make? coz I am done my school in two years I just wonder how much an average mechanic make? answer please
@chrisfix10 жыл бұрын
GAR A That is a very vague question. Mechanics make all sorts of money. Some make $15 an hour and others make $50 an hour. It depends on where you work and what you do and how good you are at it. Also, if you own your own shop, you can make millions if it is in a good location, has good service, etc. It is very variable.
@SirSlaughter35710 жыл бұрын
ChrisFix Not to mention whether or not if you have ASE's as having those certs will increase your pay rate as well. But most mechanics don't get paid on an hourly wage basis but per the job. Which gives incentive to get the job done quickly so you can move onto the next job.

How can you tell if a car is 4wd, rwd or fwd?
@chrisfix9 жыл бұрын
Kyle LaFountaine The orientation of the engine will tell you if it is fwd or rwd. If the engine is sideways it is front wheel drive. If the engine is straight front and back, it is rear wheel drive. You can also look for a driveshaft under the car going to the rear wheels which means it is rear wheel drive. To see if it is 4x4 you look at the front and rear tires and see if it has axles going to the tires. If all four tires have axles is is a 4x4.
