I guess everyones an expert here when it comes to revving cold engines, including me. I dont know every detail but I know the 250 gto engine was a purpose built endurance engine (hence the gt in the name) with a dry sump oiling system. Ive turned wrenches on quite a few cars and engines and having to rev up or blip the throttle alot on a cold race engine after startup (especially without idle circuits or a choke) was necessary. Someones shitty little 4 cylinder daily driver and a v12 built for 24hr lemans are going to be quite different inside and out. You can always count on youtube to bring out the mechanical engineering genius in everyone.

TATERTOTS JACKSON Not to mention that no one but the driver and maybe the cameraman know the state of the engine (cold or hot start) at startup while filming. My bet is with a car that can fetch between $25m - $50m at auction, whomever is firing it up will have taken EVERY precaution to preserve the motor's longivity before turning the key.

Yep. I had a souped up little renault that wouldnt idle cold you HAD to hold it open til it warmed up and it started carburating properly With the cam profile it had, and even then it needed blipping sometimes. And my Alfa 2600 sprint...hell. Triple delortos, wide open exhaust. Damn thing didnt idle until warm FROM THE FACTORY. Even with 'chokes' lol. So much lol.chokes. Heh. Pull this if you want it to stall switch. Theyve never driven an old car with carbs,a lumpy cam, bigger valves, double valve springs and some positive exhaust scavenging, just modern fuel injection and mapped ignition, but they fuggin know all about it. Dont even notice their new car idles faster cold... Start an old car with chokes and guess what, accelerated idle.
@gufo_tave6 жыл бұрын
In reality, revving is used also to warm up modern race engines. After all, without load applied, the engine must just compensate only for internal frictions. Revving a cold engine is bad IF YOU ARE APPLYING LOAD, for example when driving. This because in this case the engine has to move the entire vehicle, not only its internal parts.

My previous car fitted with dual Weber 44 IDF carbs would not let me get away with throttle blips if it was left outside. The start up procedure was... pump the throttle 1-2 times to get some fuel down the intake manifold from the acceleration circuit... turn the key to fire the engine...wait for the idle to smooth out before driving off. The carbs tend to be a bit more forgiving inside a warm garage. I still would have waited a bit longer to goose the throttle. That'd give the internals just a bit more time to expand and oil pressure a bit longer to stabilize...especially since the car is garaged.

All sides are correct regarding the cold engine. One one hand, it's best to let the oil temperature warm up before revving it -- and the Columbo V12's take a LONG time for the oil temperature to come up to operating temperature (usually 10 or 15 minutes, much longer than the water temp). On the other hand, he isn't revving it that high, so he isn't really damaging it with those blips. Most experts say the best warmup is to hold it steady at about 3k RPM's immediately after starting cold - which is a happy medium between getting oil pressure up while not revving it too high while the engine tolerances are tight as a result of the engine (metal) being cold. Many experts actually discourage blipping the throttle (whether the engine is cold or hot) on these cars because raw fuel can wash into the combustion chamber and down the cylinder walls, ever so slightly thinning out the oil over time. I don't know if I believe this or not, nor do I know why Ferrari would be different than any other car in this respect, but I've heard it said often enough that there is probably some truth to it.

Fuel actually burns when the spark plug sparks into the cylinders. The only place it goes is out the exhaust tubes as a gas.

He's not revving it very high. Remember, it's 12 cylinders, so it sounds like it's revving higher than it actually is. I'm guessing he didn't even exceed 3000 RPM.

@@rafaelribeiro3794 I let my cars idle for quite some time before I take them out. Then I still baby them til the Oil Temp is up. Its just not worth the damage to the engine for my liking.
@deafyboy865 жыл бұрын
@@gumballer133 You actually are causing further premature wear like that. Letting the engine idle for a while, it's still a cold engine, and it is still running, it's still a cold start. Letting it idle cold for a long time just means it's running far longer before coming anywhere near operating temperature. That time you really want to minimise. Best practice is to get the oil pressure up, so 10-15 seconds after start then immediately drive it gently to get the engine up to temp as fast as possible. Something like 85% of all engine wear occurs from cold running or cold starts, that extended cold running time isn't as good as just getting up to temperature asap.
@gumballer1335 жыл бұрын
@@deafyboy86 Usually what I will do is uncover whichever car we are taking, check the fluids (yea,slightly OCD), and on the fuel injected cars I start them and spray wax them while they are warming up. 5min later we start poking along the road short shifting. It has worked for me the last 22 years of having sports cars, but I'm always open for ways to improve.

Agreed, I own an '85 Alfa gtv6 with a 3.0 engine and I need to rev it on start up for a minute or two or it will stall. Even the 3.0 v6 sounds like I'm revving hard , but I don't go above 2800-2900 rpms.
