Franny, if you were a professional restorer, few people could afford your quality of workmanship. The replating of the “gold-look” parts is such a perfect idea for restoring. I love the way you “do things right” and as with the statement another of my heroes goes, “everything is important”, you are definitely one of the best.

Bummer that the plating company lost some parts - there is no excuse for that. It seems to me that they could easily use divided trays for plating that would allow for groups of parts to be segregated in the bath. Mixing everything together like they do is just poor customer service. Great video (as usual) Franny!

Nicely done. Lost parts are not uncommon with plating and it is normally washers that get lost so don't feel too bad. As it happens there is no need for you to make new washers for that steering mount. I can't account for why Ferrari used thinner washers in that application but I can say that I have seen many arbitrary hardware selections like that before with them. That said I can say with 100% confidence that there is no problem fitting a standard thickness wide diameter washer in that location. Save yourself the trouble and just order some from McMaster Carr. The only other thing is be sure to use blue loctite on all of the fasteners. It is great to keep the original yellow nylock nuts Ferrari uses and while they are structurally totally ok to re-use the nylock really is a one time use deal. Adding some loctite will keep your assemblies nice and tight for a very long time. Lastly if you ever see period photos of the factory they would assemble the complete corner with driveshaft and all off of the car and install it as an assembly. This is not practical when doing a restoration so the slower route of assembly on the car the way you are doing is the way to go.

Thanks for that!

Excellent video beautiful work. Any chance you can share the link to who does that plating and shock /coil restoration? Thak you for posting your work.
@HeidiandFranny6 ай бұрын
We did not share their link on purpose. We did not want to give them referrals. One company lost some parts, and the other messed the shocks up, and they had to be done twice. I would research at this point, our stuff is dated over three years, and with COVID, many companies have changed. Check the forums like Ferrari Chat. Hopefully, you will find current information that is better. Heidi

What are some decent "batch" plating services online? I think everyone says you are prone to lose a few small things when you use these types of services so keep the hard to replace stuff local.
@HeidiandFranny3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't know any others... The local shops here are all gone. You can do it yourself, but it is a bit pricey to get started and the chemicals are pretty intense.

You aught to get a Dry Ice cleaning shop come over and clean up all the surfaces that need sprucing up. See if you can get the local shop to do it for free advertising for them.

I don't want to remove the factory coating. All that is the factory rust proofing. It may look great after the blasting but you'd need to reapply the coating to protect it...
@Ordrock73 жыл бұрын
@@HeidiandFranny I've watched a few Chicago Auto Pros videos and they've shown that the ice doesn't remove the under coating, just makes it look clean and new. Why would a business want to ruin a finish, that's why the ice media and pressures can be adjusted. It's you car, I'm just a viewer commenting
@HeidiandFranny3 жыл бұрын
@@Ordrock7 Totally appreciate the comment! All the demos I've seen it removed all the cosmoline and anything else. Good to know you can leave it. I have two admit that I ended up removing it all from the 3.2 Carrera and it does look great but mostly because it was protected. The top of the engine was way worse than the bottom because no cosmoline. It is always a tough decision... The car is only original once. Where does patina end and worn out begin? I struggle with that too - especially on the 356.
@FordHawke13 жыл бұрын
If you are wanting thin washers like that, track down your local shock absorber rebuilder. Motor bike people with know them. They will have shims in almost every thickness and diameter you will ever need. Just wont be plated.

Great work!! We have 2 qv's - and I'm not looking forward to all that work, but it's great to see you going through it and taking the time to do it all the right way! I can't remember how many miles your car has that you had to dig into a full suspension rebuild. Can you share that detail? our 83 GTS has about 45k miles, and the 84 GTB has only 19k, so I'm hoping I have some time :)
@HeidiandFranny3 жыл бұрын
Ours has 40 something K. Maybe 47K? The rubber in the bushings was all dry-rotted. Not sure if the shocks were working correctly or not but there were some bumps and thuds in the suspension so hopefully all that will be gone. We'll see! Your '84 GTB sounds amazing!

Ladies, you need to let me hold the 308 for a few weeks. That being said, let me share my 308 story with ya. My uncle used to work for Payne and Webber and bought a 308. Could not drive a stick for shit. Asked him if I could borrow it for a week as it needed to be worked out. Drove the car around Charlotte and found a dealer. My college buddy, being the evil SOB he was decided to mess with the dealer. We pushed the car into the dealer and you could see the service crew salivating...... then we put put air in the tires and then drove off.
