Good job well done, thanks for sharing the up`s and downs. As for my expectations of the way steering should feel, ideally it should follow the road with minimal correction input and feel it self centering on turns at road junctions...even slightly stiff steering is a pain..

I bought a pro-rebuilt rack for my 308. Didn't want to mess with rebuilding myself and rebuilt unit was about $350 (2012-ish). Also not sure about the spacer. I never really had any issue with driving comfort, just used the lower half of the wheel 90% of the time. Glad you're achieving the improvements you're looking for though. Well done!

It's funny how it's exactly the same as my 78" Mini. The tie rods have those pins to lock the collars, and the same guide bushing play opposite to the pinion side. I did it without removing the rack which was a pain, and I replaced the bushing by a superpro one too. Very nice upgrade 👍 It's the best feeling when everything comes back life, especially suspension which you can't see, but behind the wheel it never lies. The difference between worn out suspensions, bushings, play, off alignment, shocks etc, when everything is new and tight, aw, best feeling ever
@PhilbyFavourites4 жыл бұрын
Frozen Pete: Best of luck my, ex wife had a ‘78 mini in the mid eighties (we were married then!) and it was a cracking taut little car. Nowadays I just buy cars at one owner 18 months old. It’s an easier option and having had classic bikes I realise that the thrill of ownership of an old classic (read project that someone else has wasted their life on before moving it on) is one I can do without. All I would want is a days drive to go “ahh I remember that feeling” then give it back.... Enjoy the mini, I close my eyes and have visions of the back pages of “Cars and Car Conversions” showing all the STUFF you can buy for it. 👍🏻👍🏻

@@PhilbyFavourites I plan to restore it properly, but it takes times with all my other toys around (the not so good idea to have 8 cars at the same time, but I like the "diversity") Its the one I've had the most fun with, with its 998 that doesn't makes 40hp nowadays, I like it as much as my e36 m3, go figure. I totally get your vibe, it's understandable as so many parameters go into the equation of classic cars pleasure VS pita ownership sometimes. In the other hand, I do everything myself, and that's so much money in my pocket instead of someone else (just like the audi a4 I'm doing, that has had a rhd front driveshaft changed for 650 bucks, I bought cars for cheaper ahaha)

Ah yes! The fabled Italian driving position. The pedals too close and wheel car away, so you sit with bent legs and your arms outstretched- very Nuvolari! In the case of the 308, the wheel was angled away from the driver to make matters even more interesting! Your modification improved this detail. As far as the Italian driving position was concerned, I found it was perfect for me, being shorter than most .The fact when you were in 5th year ,the gearlever was only a handspan from the wheel to me was ideal.The pedals of Italian cars too, positioned close together for heel and toeing.Despite the UK press reaction to such details the Alfa 33 brochure used to advertise this to advantage, Anyhow, I digress. Glad your smiling again with the 308

On some steering racks if you can get that plastic bush out without stripping it can be replaced in place. Take the new bush and cut 1 side with a very sharp knife so you dont loose any material. It can then be fitted . Normally its as good as new.

Forgive me if this sounds like basic knowledge, Whenever I replace a steering rack or inner/outer tie rods, I always disassemble the old one and count the threads (or turns) it takes to take off the old adjustable links. When installing the new adjustable links count the number of turns back on to match the old one. Every time I have done this, my toe in/out has been very close to the original setting as the previous part that was removed.
@Number274 жыл бұрын
I did this but the original settings meant the rack wasn’t centred so better o start again

Yeah, after the new bushes the rack should move with an oily smoothness. If there are any hints of it catching or increased resistance at any point it needs another look. As for the driving position, all Italian cars of this period used an Italian anthropomorphic model with shorter legs and longer arms than the UK norm. I'm lucky, I'm that shape, so didn't need the spacer. Having size 7 feet or below also used to help!
