Thing I love about Ferrets is the fact you have to train them not to bite hard. When they're naughty mommy holds them on their side by the scruff of their neck until they yawn (Ferret for "Ok I get it") - and if they're being especially naughty mom will drag them across the floor by the scruff of their neck. You *HAVE* to replicate this with ferrets in order to nip train them. Its quite funny because they yawn and immediately go back to being bouncy war dancing carpet sneks instantly. You need to do it everytime they do something bad or you dont want them to do, or if they bite you. Ferrets have really tough skin, so when they bite you, they're play biting, but play biting to a human compared to a ferret can draw blood, which is unintentional. Scruffing them teaches them that _this was too hard_ and they adjust super quickly. Its actually really wholesome and its one of things I love about the fuzzybutts. Its not like a dog or a cat that might need specific training or different training per personality, its just a simple scruff. Step one grab the scruff of the neck of the ferret being naughty Step two, hold them on their side until they yawn Step Three, immediately let go when they do. Repeat as necessary :) I miss having Ferrets :( I'd lie in the middle of that rescue and just let them scamper around and over me it would be hilarious
@KhronicD
@KhronicD 3 ай бұрын
Just as an aside, the one ferret I had growing up was nip trained before we got her. She was about 2 years old when we got her. However, she had a nipple fetish. Like, a serious one. She knew not to bite too hard, but if you let her into your shirt, she would nibble on your nipples. Male, female, she didn't care. She liked to bite nipples. I cannot even remember if she ever nipped at any other point, even during exciting play, but you were taking your chances if you laid down and let her get into your shirt. Saucy little minx that she was.
@BuckTurgidson-nw7yk
@BuckTurgidson-nw7yk 9 сағат бұрын
I used a different method to nip train so I could reserve scruffing for medical procedures rather than discipline. Essentially it would involve letting the ferret bite but cease all movement, as soon as the ferret releases then you go straight back to play, they learn fairly quickly what too hard hard is but they also learn that they can still bite and play with me as if I was another ferret.

It was very rewarding to see them get healthier and happier with medical care and space out of a cage. It is so great to see someone with the resources to make a rescue like this. I hope the project goes smoothly and I am excited to see this journey!

I rarely leave any comments, but I feel I need to in this case. I owned 5 ferrets (two I bought and three rescued) up until 6 years ago, and they financially ruined me, because I refused to put them down when they got sick. I know how crazy expensive their medical treatments can be, but I don't regret spending on them. They are magical pets, and my only regret is that I can't adopt more due to finances. Thank you for doing this Thor, you are a wonderful human being.

Growing up, my father decided to get ferrets for the house. They ended up taking a lot of the house, but I loved them regardless because they were very fun to see interact and play with. We ended up having 12 at one point. Unfortunately, all of them have passed away now, mostly due to my father not getting them treatment because it was too expensive. It was really sad to see each of them go and have their family slowly become smaller and smaller until only two were left. Thank you for doing this Thor, these guys are too silly of creatures to not have a good home.

I live in apartments next to a collage and the number of students that bring their giant dog from home only to leave them locked up in the apartment constantly while they're jumping between classes and work and social life. Like I know the law doesn't consider that animal abuse but I sure as hell do.

Agreed. Cats need to be kept inside to protect themselves and native wildlife, but then need the proper obligate carnivore diet and environmental enrichment. It's the same for birds, fish, reptiles, and more. Animals, even domestic ones still require their needs to be properly met.

This. This is exactly the reason I don't have any pets. I spend 12+ hours of every day out of the house working and doing other things. Most pets cannot live a decent life spending 12+ hours a day alone and confined, even in something like a normal sized apt or house. It just seems cruel to me.
@privatjetconnaisseur

@@LintheKumofan very true. jsut wanted to correct u on one thing so u know for the future. cats (and also dogs) dont need carnivore diets. any independant study (studys that arent financed by a business that would profit fro ma biased view, like a narnovre cat food producer) in the past years have shown both cats and dogs not only are fine with vegan diets, but thrrive on them. especially dogs have less medical problems and less severity, logner lifespans, better fur and more, but even cats have had better results on vegan diets than conventional ones. with owners and veterinarians reporting better conditions, although a logner life expectancy isnt proven yet, but its at least equal with less vet visits and the visits being for smaller issues, since large ones (liek heart desease) are reduced within the vegan diet. with how youtube handles links, u can just search for "meat vs vegan cat diet study" or "vegan cat study" and will find multiple studies that arent behind paywalls and are financed independantly, usually by universities. e.g. one from BMC veterinary research from 2021.

The vet expenses thing isn't limited to exotics. I have cats now and the regular vets around here are charging $500+ just for spy/neutering. One of my females got an infection and they quoted $1300 to "emergency spay" her. Antibiotics cleared it right up and she even had a litter of perfectly healthy kittens after. They're all scammers as far as I'm concerned.

This is the danger most people don't really understand about social animals. Even though we see it pretty often in people as well. How many times have you seen stories about someone's grandfather or grandmother just die for no real reason after their spouse dies? It's even more apparent in other species. It's also why it's illegal in some places to even have certain species as pets unless you have multiple of them. ;)

If it was me and I was building a common space for a large amount of animals. I would make sure the floors are easily hosed down and the drains are covered and secured with screws. Being able to just hose down a floor at the end of the day makes cleaning up messes so simple and easy. Having the ability to squeegee broom up the left over water and have the floors dry again in minutes would be insane for simple upkeep of a common area playroom. Having fans to circulate air would also help. I know I sound like I am coming out of left field here. But many ferrets aren't house broken properly and just let if fly where ever they are. It’s honestly genius to set up a stream per room in the rescue for ferrets specifically. You of course get the ad revenue, but then on top of that ferrets are just fun to watch, which means more donations even if they’re unsolicited. Then on top of *that* it means someone is always going to be watching the rooms so there’s a possibility of noticing health problems quicker, PLUS more people will want to help out hopefully.

If it's 110°f outside your ac won't be keeping up when the humidity is also 100% With jackerbeans being almost 11yrs old he has never needed a single vet visit. Not one. No health complications at all. He still able to go up and down in his cage, still climbs out of his cage. His rear legs are still stable. He also prefers to be alone, which is wild. I've had over 20 fukkets in my life and jack is the first anti social one. When I first got jack he joined a business of 6 other ferrets and never really was very social. Love my little jackerbeans. He's my last ferret.

If you see this, thank you. I owned 4 ferrets, they passed semi recently the youngest being 12 years old the oldest was 15 so i had them for a long time. They are such amazing and steong critters with alot of crazy and love. They get adopted by all the wrong people and wish they had a harder process to acquire. This warms my heart, i cant get more ferrets as the loss hurt me more than i thought so this kind of things means the world

My first ferret my mom adopted when I was 7 years old. That ferret was 5 years old when we adopted her and we were told she came from somewhere in Europe originally. She lived to be 13 years old. Then we got two more ferrets from a local pet store and they both died at 8 and 9 years old sadly. We found out that US bred ferrets had shitty genes after we got them. But they still had a pretty long life for being US bred. I haven't owned ferrets since then but I love them so much. They are by far some of the funniest creatures ever to exist on this planet.

I had listened to your description during your first time on "Dropped Frames" regarding this rescue, and finding this video is just fills in the blanks of what I was wondering about. Once again, you are providing positive examples for everyone. Even your reasons for keeping it as a part of your regular production and not a charity or non-profit are, in my very humble opinion, the most unselfish and intelligent I have ever heard. I applaud you on your dedication, and your chosen direction in general. I am from the boomer generation, but have strived to maintain the same values you are demonstrating, and proud to see that there are people who still believe in "the right thing". The chemotherapy for the 2 ferrets as a proof of viability, then handed off to the veterinary is purely the best thing to do, and you didn't bat an eye, thank you.

This is INSANE! I've started out streaming roughly about a year ago and being able to do things like this right here is my dream. Watching people with established platforms helping those in need, including animals, is the most heartwarming thing I could imagine. I only hope that I'm able to help some critters or people in need one day to an extent like this! We actually ran a charity stream last year for a family of 6 just before Christmas because their only family car was totaled by a driver under the influence. The mother was going to school for nursing and working on top of that as the sole earner because the father is disabled with some pretty limiting mental challenges. He still manages the kids at home with his disability though. It might not seem like a lot, but we managed to raise 3k for them to buy presents for the children and help rent a replacement car for her to get back and forth to work/school! We also raised a few hundred earlier this year for a lady that lost her baby suddenly. Most heartbreaking thing, but we tried to help cover some of the bills, funeral costs, etc. I know it doesn't help the emotional weight of the situation, but we tried to at least help with part of the financial burden. I'm so thankful we are building a community that cares enough to help those in need!

5 years is really short, I live in the Netherlands and only the weak little runt of my 3 ferrets lived that long. The other two went past that (although they sadly had to be euthanised), and that's considering there were severe health issues messing with the species here, too! What's also bizarre to me is just how little is known about them; when I got my first ferret (~8 years ago I think) it was still assumed they functioned best when solitary, because they're predators. Now we know they really need a buddy. Luckily, I was sick and stuck at home when I had my first ferret so he didn't get lonely, but still, I felt kinda bad when I learned they're more social than previously thought. Also they're not nearly as expensive here for some reason. I don't remember what I paid for my first one (the other two were given to me by someone who could no longer take care of them) but it was less than 100 euros. I really hope I can get back into having them as pets when I'm finally earning some more money because I love the little guys.

I used to care for some ferrets at an animal summer camp - they are so much fun! They all have unique personalities and they are super smart and mischievous. Double doors is a good idea - we had several that would work together to escape the enclosure with a single door. They had one stand right by the opening of the door where we couldn't see, and another one standing up eagerly looking through the window (one wall next to the door was mesh, like chicken wire) as a distraction. We would open the door ready to stop the distraction from coming out, while the other was immediately darting out underfoot. Thankfully it was into an enclosed hallway, but they did manage to get under the sink and hide behind the drain plumbing once :D This is such a great thing you are doing.

I'm impressed by your setup. My aunt used to rescue ferrets, and I think had at most 37 at once? They lived in a room similar in size to the one you've shown, fully furnished for them (with most of them getting to spend time wandering other parts of her house). I want to say she normally had 20+ for the decade or so that she did it, but eventually she wanted to downsize her home and put more money into retirement, so didn't take in any more of the cute little buggers. It was always fascinating seeing them all interacting with each other, and getting a feel for all the ferrets' different personalities. I hope this thing keeps working out for you, dude, because it's pretty awesome!

New Beginnings For Cats in Bourbonnais, IL has a really similar building set up to what you're planning! They even have a barn out back just for the feral cats, that keeps them safe and from decimating the wildlife but also keeps them away from humans who would want to pet and hold them. When we lived there, my husband and I would go every single week to help socialize the new cats, and we wound up adopting our first three cats from there. 10/10 place.

It´s so rare to find someone, that doesn´t just view ferrets as "rodents" or "vermin". It re-ignites my believe in humanity, to know that this entire operation, with fully paid staff etc, is able to be run off of ad rev. alone - That´s absolutely wild to me, and makes me proud to be a viewer and follower of yours. I´ve been having the stream up 24/7 the last few weeks, and I´m not planning to stop. The fact that you´re planning to build the largest rescue in the entire USA, really shows your dedication which just makes me want to support you even more. I can´t wait to see the new facility, when it´s up and running!. Huge pad on the back and well-wishes from Denmark

That's really awesome of you Thor! I use to own a ferret when I was younger and he was super cute too. His name is Chaz and during the winter pure white fur with beady red eyes. And during the summer semi brownish with light and dark tones. But wanted to say thank for doing that for the ferrets!!! I will say I do miss him, he was a sweet boy and sometimes he would sleep with me but I always freaked out when I woke up because I move around in my sleep and always thought I might of squashed him(which if I did, then woulda been super depressed but NEVER did). But I was still sad when he died from having a seizure when he was older during his bath time. Thought I can't really remember how long I had him for maybe at least 5 or maybe longer. But he was a good and happy/sleepy boy! Basically, I will always remember the good times ive had with him! 😊😊😊
