It's a really good idea to turn the water from the drainage layer into a pond. As long as you change the water frequently, it won't be a problem. I enjoyed the video🙂
@yourlocaltoad51023 жыл бұрын
It’s definitely a much better idea than trying to have a pond that’s separated from the soil on the same level. I tried that and my separation between pond and soil got leaky (it was just a silicones piece of glass along the bottom of the tank) and now I have to run my „pond“ really low to prevent my soil from turning into a wet swampland.
@ferretwonderland2 жыл бұрын
MossriumMan I love your video,too. Keep going!!
@Newt27992 жыл бұрын
It would probably be difficult, but maybe a faucet could eventually be added to the bottom of the tank so the water could be drained instead of having to be sucked up

@@yourlocaltoad5102 This exact same thing happened to me while I was actually still putting it together. Ended up raising the gravel layer QUITE a bit but still run the 'pond' low as well. My boys still like it, but it really changed my aquatic plant plans lol

How often is "frequently"? Every other week or something? Also, could you maybe add snails or something so that the water doesn't need to be changed much at all? I would love to make as close to a perfect, self-sustaining ecosystem as I can! 😊

Neat concept! I do worry about the longevity of this setup though. The frogs likely won't generate enough waste to feed the moss, and maintaining humidity may be problematic for those looking to imitate this setup. An organic substrate between the live moss and the drainage layer would be prudent; coco coir, sphagnum moss, or a mix of both would do. Minimizing their exposure to sand is probably a good idea also. Also, you can improvise a siphon with a length of thin airline tube. That may be easier than using a pipette.

@@stdlr1565 fungal blooms aren't necessarily a bad thing in bioactive setups, and can be indictive of a functioning decomposition cycle! The Biodude, king of all things bioactive, actually has culture seeding packets (Bioshot) for sale in his shop. Of course, if something is absolutely overrunning the tank then balance is in question. Happy terrariums/vivariums have a distinct and lovely smell, not unlike petrichor. Fart or rot smells emanating from the tank indicate something is amiss. If it's sprouting shrooms but passes the sniff test, it's probably ok. ETA: biggest is better for bioactive setups. You're absolutely right.

This really needs a drainage layer, not only does it help things stay clean it makes for a bigger moisture reservoir, and allows you, if you have or make a tiny canister filter, simulate rainfall with a regular misting. The "layout" is pretty, but it's either going to have trouble staying too humid -there's already condensation on the inside glass- , or not humid enough. Airflow looks like it'll be a problem too. and the frogs do need fresh air, not just humidity alone.. I don't think the moss is going to do well on just those small pebbles either, they like a little bit of soil. The build is pretty, but it's going to have problems long-term (within a month), not least of which is going to be from frog waste buildup and dead fruit flies in the corners.
