It's like the whole song is about the things we do to distract ourselves from loneliness. We have these magical ideas about what will happen "when I grow up" in the forest or at the sea but you just end up waiting ("waiting for it to embrace me"/"waiting for it to come back to me"). And then when you're grown up (with cucumbers on your eyes, maybe because you're old and trying to look young again) you realize you just wasted all this time waiting for someone to love you when maybe you could have done something to ease the loneliness. Kind of interesting when you pair it with the video, which seems like something's gonna happen the whole time (she'll jump in) but then she just...doesn't.

I’m so glad this song has grown to 20,000,000 views. Me and my group of friends down here in Texas absolutely loved this record, and Fever Ray seemed to go under the radar for most of the world. She was very early to bring back this retro electronic sound that has become more and more popular in the decade + since this record came out. Fever Ray is making some wild shit now a days, not my taste, but this album was so god damn amazing that she (and her brother) will forever have a fan in me. Haha so I have come back to this video to learn it on a the drums, and I saw it had 20 millions views and literally said to myself aloud “FUCK YES, I am SOOO glad this video has this many views.” I go down to the comments, and it looks like I said this exact thing and had the exact same feeling 3 months ago. I spread this record around to so many people back when it came out, and everyone loved it. It’s by far my favorite album of this type of music, since I usually listen to more tech/death metal or soft folky kinda stuff. I rarely listen I any electronic based music. I found this album on the new artists end stand in a branch of HMV when it came out, when I was 20. Love it. Don't listen to it enough these days. I saw her in London. I've only ever been to two live shows, Fever Ray and Sigur Rós. The Fever Ray gig was the best event of any kind I have ever been to.

My dad first showed me this song and music video when I was 7, at the start of his and my moms divorce. He was staying at an hotel for while and my little brother and I would visit sometimes and I remember asking him to show me this video most of the times I saw him. I just managed to find it after all these years, and while it gives me nostalgia because I was obsessed with it as a kid, it also makes me very uncomfortable and upset because of the feelings I had back then, which are still so connected to the music in my head. It's a beautiful song and I'm glad I managed to find it again and see it in an entirely new light now that I'm 18 and understand English, but it also brings up a lot of bad memories.

love this song, I am captive to it. I understand it as a sung from an adult who still waiting for a sign of affection (or a show of comfort) that they've had since childhood; a hug from mom/dad or the like. Maybe the person the narrator sings to abdondoned them, or died, or maybe they failed to return the love the child felt for them. By the verses: 1-even when I grow up I'll be waiting for you to come (back) to me 2-for all the things I'll have, I'll be "waiting for it |you| to embrace me" 3-I did things for you, drew a picture, but I didn't like it because "I never liked a sad look from someone who wants to be loved by you" - like I do. 4-I'm an adult/my friends trust me/I am responsible/I work- I stay occupied because when I have time to think, I cry for you. 5-(Cucumber facial?)you spent your time preparing for things that didn't happen, that didn't involve me. I learned about Fever Ray through the theme song of the show "Vikings" called "If I had a heart" and I wanted to look up some songs and i came up to this it's been almost 10 years since i heard this song playing PRO Evolution Soccer 2011 and I never knew how the song was called, my entire body got chills from the nostalgia.
