The lab rats hoods have the same 1 inch filter as the gordo tek diy hood. I built the gordo hood for 90$ and a hood from lab rats of the same size is 400+$. I’ve poured hundreds of plates in front of my home made hood with very high success rates. I have an ffu now purely because I don’t like working in front of an 11 inch hepa.

Funny enough, I do all my inculcations, especially agar, in my closet! I have a big walk in closet in the master bedroom of my apartment that stays between 74-76°, and has zero air flow when the door is closed. We also have hardwood floors which is a godsend for this hobby. They’re cleaned weekly, and It’s a lot easier for molds and spores to get trapped in your carpet. I literally sit my 66qt tub, with my current shoeboxes going, on the floor of my closet. I take a seat on the floor in front of it, and use the lid of the tub as a table top, then I prep the area to be sterile. Do my inoculations as fast as possible, and voilà. The air is so still in there, the only contamination I’ve run into AT ALL at this place, was a yeast contam on my first two agar plates. But that was due to my own error. Im actually quite lazy at times with my sterile technique, and some how still get away with 95% successive grows. I hope to up that number to 100% now that I’ve found you, and use ITW for genetics.

Definitely, all about understanding the fundamentals like how a still air box works and sterile technique. Thanks for commenting.

I have a similar one with the same type of filter that I made years ago and no problems the only difference is a have a prefilter on top with the duct fan in between throwing in air I to the box I also have a thin black filter inside the box. with this setup I get very clean air for years because I recharge the charcoal pre filter I put on top of the box with microban. I've use this setup for years and years now. You can literally smell the clean charcoal

Where's the forest shot towards the end from? It reminds me of a house and land I think my mother and some family members stole from me in SW. Washington. It's a long story. I picked a few nice mushies out there though. I miss it, the forest. It had dozens of acres of large mature trees mostly Douglas first and pastures. Thanks.

@@Mycophiliaasking 1k+ for a 2ft FFU is insane though and that seems to be the current going in the market. Other than the filter itself the materials cost tens of dollars. The supply is so low but I can't imagine that the demand is that high. As mycology becomes more popular as a hobby how hasn't anyone mass fab'ed a decently priced FFU yet?

Labratz seems like a sound company but they're charging $16 for the wire rack that goes in front of a flow hood, I wanted to order one across the pond and it was an extra $15 shipping. Nothing short of extortion.

As im trying to open a mushroom farm i have talked to many farms and all thier lab techs say they use hepa filter attach to a inline fan like i do i have a 6 inch inline with a 6inch heapa filter i got from a/c Infinity.. my setup is like if you search diy fruiting chamber on youtube.. he used 4 inch setup.. i did all 6inch which is way better.. all automated even watering. I do all my work in my tent once i close it the room becomes negative pressure room no worries at all

Dude, dont worry about the people that say "you sold out". They live in some fairy tale world. In reality if you can get paid or get free product for giving your honest opinion on something then why wouldnt you? Its not like youve lied about anything to make something sound like its not for sales or wasnt honest about a review. Again, dont worry about weirdo people like that. All of us normal and sane people that watch you and communicate with you understand how the real world works. Nothing but love for the sage.

A bit pricey at 265 bucks . My 85 qt sab is a bit clumsy at times but I'll stick with it for now. Slick unit though
@Mycophilia
@Mycophilia Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I had full intention of sticking with a SAB (still do a lot of stuff in it too) before being given this unit. Regardless if I could only have 1 unit, whether it’s a laminar flowhood or a SAB, I would always choose the SAB as it can do absolutely everything with just a plastic tote. You definitely don’t want to be opening up dirty moldy plates in any flow unit whatsoever. Simplicity is intelligence imo

I cant go back to the sab, was just way to crowded. Flow hood or ffu is like a whole new world lol.The thingis though it all comes down to technique, if its a sab or ffu, if your technique is off it aint gonna help nothing. Sab is great for learning sterile technique.
@Mycophilia

If I could only have one for the rest of my life, I would always choose the SAB. Flow units definitely are more comfortable to work in though.
@depraved420

@@Mycophilia I just feel cramped in the sab but mine was only 66qt so it was small. Only problem I ever had really was that orange bacteria you get from hovering or leaving things open to long. Sabs are great though definitely a good option and they work just fine. 🍄❤️
@Mycophilia
@Mycophilia Жыл бұрын
@@depraved420 SABs are definitely uncomfortable to work in, but a large SAB is not that bad, and in terms of sterility, there is literally no difference, it’s up to the user. It is very very effective. The reason I said that I would choose a SAB if I can only have one for the rest of my life is because you can do everything in a SAB, things that you can’t do in flowhoods like clean up moldy cultures without blowing the spores everywhere, and ofc being able to use it anywhere without electricity.
@depraved420
@depraved420 Жыл бұрын
@@Mycophilia definitely bro, also replacing a sab is wayyyyy cheaper then replacing a ffu, flow hood or filter. You could get 10+ sabs for how much it costs to replace one filter lol, I'm not looking forward to that but a prefilter is supposed to extend the life of it significantly. Thanks for all the info Sage and the amazing videos. ❤️

The mushroom community can get a little psilly sometimes. Especially in business. I've noticed a decent amount of awful behavior and sabotage in the industry from afar. The juxtaposition between that and the kindest people on earth is really interesting to me. Shroomery cultivation board feels like that vs. the rest of the site (except OTD). Don't let their drama get to you, we all really appreciate your invaluable content and connection and your own personal audience and network are the only people who matter.

I have a $2,500.00 2' X 4' X 11.5" FFU, that I built a $400.00 plexiglass cabinet for. 90% of the people I talk to (or that talk about laminar flow) have no idea how to tell the difference between a FFU & a laminar flow filter (not a hood, a hood means it comes with a cabinet) glad to hear you made +- $0.006 from your 15k subs ;) (on average) you're going to be rich in about 700,000 years, if you don't spend anything that is.....

If the Filter fan works than your surrounding air is already clean enough to do OPEN AIR inoculations. All the Filter is going to do is catch the larger particles like dust but blow millions more of the smaller ones all across your work. This WILL work for some but it WILL not ALWAYS work for others. If your place is REALLY CLEAN TRY IT if not DON'T EXPECT IT TO DO MUCH.
@Mycophilia
@Mycophilia Жыл бұрын
If that’s the case why would most people even bother using a SAB or a FFU? Most people would only be getting contamination using the FFU then 🤣 My place is not clean at all. It doesn’t add up and sounds like nonsense.
