I’d have to know mechanics by heart to even take a DRG on certain encounters.
@Seth_Kay5 жыл бұрын
Just a quick tip, Rob: you don't actually need to hit your positionals on the 4th _and_ 5th attacks to be allowed to use Raiden Thrust. Despite what the tooltip says, the only requirement is to do the 5th hit with the right positional, and you'll trigger the Raiden opener. Of course, it's always better DPS-wise to hit both attacks correctly for that nice potency increase, but if it's too hairy / impossible to do that, blow the 4th attack and focus on doing the 5th correctly. The opposite is _not_ true: hitting the 4th correctly and messing up the 5th will not get you Raiden Thrust. Other than that, I'll argue that DRG has more complexity that it lets on, but it is true that it's very straightforward to play. Optimizing fights with it is super fun tho, using all those Jumps to never lose uptime is really cool. As always, excellent video !
@iBluairJgR5 жыл бұрын
Oh nice. Thanks for the tip about Raiden Thrust. Regarding the complexity, there's definitely room for mastery. I know I've still got to work on lining up my buffs better to get the most out of -Blood for blood- Lance Charge.

Actually despite what a lot of people say, the tooltip is correct, it's just packed with so many words if you dont read it carefully you can easily misunderstand it.
@HatsukaRaigeki5 жыл бұрын
One correction, You just need to land the last Fang&Claw or Wheeling Thrust correctly to gain Raiden Thrust. Don't need to hit both at the correct positions. However ofc its best to hit both but at times when you can't hit the first one you can always try hit just the last one to get raiden thrust.

Loved the video, but there is actually a lot more to DRG than you see on the surface. It's probably one of the easiest DPS in the game to pick up and understand but mastering it comes down to VERY tight execution of skills and raid buff optimizing. It's what every job should be IMO, easy to learn, hard to master.
@Seth_Kay5 жыл бұрын
I have to agree on that. Although I will admit that the class itself is certainly easier to play than others, it all boils down to utilizing and exploiting all of your kit at the right moment to get the maximum out of it. You CAN be a competent Dragoon by doing the fight normally, but optimizing everything in your arsenal around the fight and/or your team is where it's at. I know this can be said for just about every class and every encounter, but it feels a lot more prevalent on DRG, if only because your Jumps have to be used efficently.

It actually becomes a lot more complicated when put into practical use in end game contents, given the nature of the infinite combo meaning it's almost imperative that you hit every single positional. It worked like this from the start even in Early Access. "Grants Raiden Thrust Ready if Fang and Claw is executed following Wheeling Thrust─or vice versa─while adhering to direction requirements." - I suppose it's just the wording of the skill description that's slightly misleading as you could easily interpret it both ways. As a main dragoon, I have to say that you're wrong about the deep knowleadge about the job. It's Not just only the surface.When you begin to do highend, you start to feel even more complexity on the job. You dont ever gonna use the buffs as you usually do, you now will have to time it better with your own skills or with your party composition uptime aswell, never right after a full/chaos thrust, for example, or you will wait even more for those big dps CDs so you can get better damage output in "Stardiver" the lvl80 skill. Some stuff like that and positioning on the bosses to keep the uptime high, make the job always enjoyable. Of course, not in dungeons, that's not the farthest where the job can get, but the Savage content is actually where you can really enjoy and feel cool with the job. This happen with every single job in the game aswell, where you see a healer doing 5k dps and this player thinks that is doing it good, but a Savage content's player look up to make 8k dps as a WHM for example. My point is, that the complexity of the job actually never end scaling up, as better you as player become! Either way, I have to say, that with each expansion I feel that the dragoon is a little bit easier each time, so that also makes me a little unconfortable with it x'D But see the Monk, for example, when they had the "Doble Tackle" wich gives that extra Graised Lighining, the hole rotation changed and it was REALLY hard to even comprehend the thing, but now is waaaaaay simple that those final moments of Stormblood were. So I'm still enjoying dragoon, cuz with this last changes, it still feels amazing

I just found that you gotta save Blood of the Dragon so your gauge doesn't run out to crank Nastrond. A little bit of directional attacks but overall DRG is fun. Dragoon has been my main since late ARR, i really liked it in Stormblood but now in Shadowbringers i absolutely love it. Yeah our rotation is still pretty rigid and "boring" to some but the new toys and QoL changes we got are amazing. I especially love the 30 sconds on Blood/Life of the Dragon because it opens up at least some leeway on when to use them for better burst windows. Now if only they could tweak Dragon Sight to be slightly less bothersome to use. I understand Dragoon might look simplistic on first glance but to be optimal there's a lot more to it than meets the eye in a raid encounter. Dungeons and easy content sure, go ham and look sexy, but if you want to get the most out of the class there's quite a lot to consider.

They massively improved the rotations this expansion by adding the damage buff to the main combos. In Stormblood the buff had to be maintained separately and demanded more multi-tasking. In stormblood it felt like 10 times the work for less personal dps than many other classes. This expansion the concentration required is a lot better, but the personal DPS is actually quite high on FF logs for a DPS with additional raid utility.

Glad they're enjoyable for ya! Regarding the low level dragoon, it feels like someone screwed up when they were adjusting skills because dragoon is HORRIBLE before level 26. Full thrust should probably get unlocked at level 10 so at the very least, you can do a full combo in the low levels. Then at level 18, you unlock Disembowel for a damage buff and you can start managing the timings.

I was a Dragoon main from ARR to Stormblood, but dropped it for Machinist in Shandowbringer. Don't get me wrong the damage is great, but I feel it only because it has such high damage that it so popular right now. If it get nerf, it going to be what Ninja is right now: forgettable. My biggest issue for this expansion for Dragoon is that while the numbers are high, I don't FEEL like I'm in those moments of absolute power. For Example Summoner have the Bahamunt/Phoenix phase. Machinst have Queen phase, Dark Knight has Shadow phase. A lot of Jobs have their level 80 move give them moments to dish out loads of damage. For Dragoon: After doing all those jumps and dives and making sure your Blood doesn't empty (a problem Monk had) all we get is....1 jump. Then we have to do all those jumps and dives again to do that 1 jump again. Basically it has the same problem that I had with Dragoon in Stormblood: Life of the Dragon doesn't FEEL like I have powered up.

My one and only complaint is that Disembowel's damage buff is a pain in the ass to refresh on aoe pulls. Instead of pressing heavy thrust (one button) you have to do two steps of the chaos thrust combo. I just want to have the buff applied and refreshed on Sonic Thrust as well.
@iBluairJgR5 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It seems like the devs forgot to add the "extends duration of disembowel" to sonic thrust the way they did for EVERY OTHER job in the game lol.

@@iBluairJgR Yeah. I don't especially mind having to do the CT combo when there's trash pulls with That One Extra Beefy Dude(tm) but it's super annoying in every other situation. I don't see it talked about much, so I'm assuming it's just something long-time DRG players get annoyed by.

You nailed my issue/love with Dragoon. My main DPS is BLM and I'm leveling MNK and DRG now jumping back and forth because MNK feels super complex because it's just really fast paced with positionals so when I want something simpler I level DRG which is fun for a bit but can start to feel stale once you get into the flow of the game again because it feels so simple compared to to MNK or BLM tbh. Love/hate job but glad they have DRG as simple melee, MNK as hard, and SAM is kinda in between.

I'm a DRG main and the Best part for me is that it is so easy. You can brain dead easyly pull of your rotation and focus quicker on the mechanics of a savage fight (you dont have to know what mechanic will happen next, you can just react in the spot while one braincell takes care of the rotation and all the other take care of the mechanic) and when to use what skill in order to keep your uptime and so on and so forth.

@iBluairJgR5 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'll ever make a full video about my control setup but I can answer the question for ya. I play with my mouse in my left hand so I have most of my keybinds centered around the number pad. Left, Right, Up & Down arrows are where I put my main actions and other actions get placed on the num pad where there's space. The secret sauce to making good keybinds is finding buttons that are located close to where you hands and fingers naturally rest. For a standard WASD setup, I would say you can bind things to Q,E,R,T, F & G in addition to the normal 1 - 0 binds. Though, I'd be careful about binding too many commonly used actions on numbers farther than 6 because you have to lift your hand up to press those.

Don't u get Raiden Thrust only by hitting the positional on the 5th hit? i mean it's still important to get both positionals correct every time. but i main DRG and when ShB dropped i'm loving all the changes. That and i'm still a relatively new player (just started in March this year) so i wasn't until early may that i was able to understand and execute the positionals correctly (i still miss a few here and there when i'm brain dead in expert roulette). In Stormblood there was a lot of nuance in the Geirskol and Life of the Dragon and while there's still an element of that it's WAAAAYYYY easier to manage in ShB.

Hey! Little tip ^^ get a macro where you put both Wheeling thrust & Fang and claw in the same button, then you only will have to press that button when you need to use any of those 2. As far as you know wich one are you using, is a good way to save 1 button in 2 skills! (U won't have the usual macro thing problem with these, cuz they only turn on, one each time, so your macro will only execute the one possible, then the other, without ANY issue. Try it out!)

Jup! You're right on the nail there with your thoughts on how there isn't a higher complexity to it, which is why I switched from DRG main in HW to SAM in SB. In HW the job was a bit more complex as your Geirskogul drained your Blood of the Dragon timer by 10s, but it also had a 10s CD (like Nastrond now). On top of that BotD itself had a 60s CD, so if you lost it from carelessly Geirskogul'ing, or Dragonlaz0r as I like to call it, it was quite punishing. The rotation on a DRG in HW was just a bit more... dynamic? These days the rotation is set in stone really. :)

I dislike the melee DPS jobs in this game because I find them all boring. But, Dragoon is my favorite of the 4. It's static rotation is my issue. It's the same 11 buttons over and over again while weaving in jumps and buffs. Everything just lines up and it doesn't feel like much is there. But, great video nonetheless. Keep up the good work.

Nice video btw but I disagree. On my new character I now main Dragoon exclusively. With sam as my back up dps. I've come to notice that anyone can play drag but to master it's not as simple. There's a lot to press and to remember. It does get better with time but I would say compared to a samurai Dragoon is way more complex in the late stages. Samurai looks very simple in your face it's really not a lot to it it's just straight DPS there's no utility at all.
@benpescod53505 жыл бұрын
This was a little more disappointing than previous videos imo. No mention of the DoT or Disembowel uptime but plenty of mention of a lack of complexity. There was a mention of SAMs complexity with resource management, which DRG does have with BotD - although admittedly it has been watered down since 5.0, whereas previously this is where the complexity of job mastery came in. ALSO, there is so much enjoyment that comes from using skills that have been plucked from Nidhogg, and design choices influenced by the HW era. Every Nastrond, and every Stardiver is just. so. satisfying. and harks back to the good ol' Nidhogg days.
@iBluairJgR5 жыл бұрын
Dragoon's DoT & Buff doesn't require any special management. You rotate between your two combos (full thrust & chaos) and your dots & buffs will never fall off. BotD literally can't fall off now unless your not using Fang & Wheeling. It's also not a resource that has to be managed like Kenki (use too much Shinten and you won't be able to Kaiten for Midare). Especially now that entering LotD puts you automatically at 30s, there's nothing to think about while playing DRG outside of the standards i.e. cooldown alignment and GCD clipping. p.s. the DRG animations are dope.

I know u say the complexity really isnt there but honestly even in ff14, the easiest job is still harder to master than the hardest class in WoW. WoE the classes dont have a ton of buttons and the difficulty lives more in the raid fights than mastering the class in general. Ff14 alot of the difficult is mastering your job than raid mechanics(even tho savage raids r very tough) so to me ff14 easier boss fights much harder job mastering. WoW way easier class mastery harder raid bosses.
