I don’t really recommend the Strathmore watercolor sketchbook, the problem you were having was not the paints but the paper. You can maybe put down 2 layers and it starts to lift everything after that. I experimented with different papers to compare and the paper was the problem. Anyway, have a great weekend!!! Valerie Laureano it’s kinda why I like it 😹 it sits on top of the paper and I can easily soften and hard edges. When I work on paper like these, I shift my painting process to get the values I want in the first go. I completely understand this sketchbook is not for everyone, especially those that prefer cotton paper

Victoria Gedvillas That’s good then, I just didn’t want you to think that the paints were the problem with the layering. I like paper that is not 100% cotton too, it makes me paint differently, like Stillman and Birn and Travelodge. I once bought a pack of 2 sketchbooks from Amazon that were $6 total and I kind of love them! I hope to see how you continue to work with Strathmore sketchbook. 😊

Daniella13 R. I personally don’t like it, I gave mine away. I really like the Seawhite sketchbook, I got it from Jackson’s Art online. Strathmore also has a new sketchbook that is supposed to be cotton it has a white cover, you can get it from Blick’s. I hope this helps!

@Daniella13 R. hope i'm not too late! strathmore is the paper I always use and yes, paint reacts different, you get a lot of fun edges and washes that you can achieve with cotton paper but way easier (as you don't need to use heavy amounts of water). it does make the paint underneath reactivate sometimes, but in my expierence it happens just when you are using a wet on wet techique and the first layer is almost dry (i don't have this problem, as I work with wet on dry). I totally suggest you try it just to experiment and see how it works with your style and technique!

I really love Mayan Blue its so pretty. I originally thought I woundn't use it much because it doesn't have a huge value range but I ended up loving the granulation and its blueish green color. It the coolest blue I have on my palette and it makes some really nice greens or just a nice moody background.

With Mayan Blue Gen. you need to dry it first due to some weird thing with the binder, and it's low key weak when fresh out of the tube. By drying it you can get really dark values with it.

I love Mayan blue genuine so much it’s so pretty but after buying Mayan blue dark I only use that one it’s such a beautiful dark blue similar in tint to b60 in other brands but I feel like it holds the punch of the color a bit more when drying compared to b60 paints. Although full disclosure I often use it straight up without mixing.

Hi! I've been in kind of a slow period of art, going long whiles without drawing or painting, not finishing things, and I think doing a project like this would help! If I do, is it alright if I do it in a format like this? An "art habit" series on here? If I use a title similar to yours I would want to know its okay first, (and regardless of titles I'll be mentioning tht you inspired me to do it!) Either way, Thank you for doing this and sharing it!
