Was the Fiat / Padmini your first car? What are your memories of it? And which of these cars featured is your favourite?

Our first car was 1954 Fiat 1100, also know as millecento. We bought it second hand in 90s. It even had "Made in Italy" written on the chassis plate. Padmini was it successor but 1100 had much more features like heater etc. I learned driving on this car. Thanks for making this video.

My dad had bought a Shell White Premier Padmini in 1988, was with us till 1994. I still remember the day when he told us that he had sold the car and bought a new Maruti 800. I was in Madras for my dussera holidays and watching Hum Apke Hain Kaun in a theatre when my uncle broke the news to me during the interval (there was no mobile phones those days, and my dad had informed my uncle earlier that day on his office phone to inform my mom). I cried during the entire second half of the movie. Used to love that car, the registration number CNU 6996 was a palindrome just like my first name. I got very emotional as a child, I realised that when I went back to Bangalore I won't see my favourite car again. This video brought back so many memories. The Premier Padmini will always remain a sentimental favourite. Thanks for this awesome video.

I love seeing old Indian cars driven. I have childhood memories of being in Ambassador and Padmini taxi; I was fascinated by the column shifter and always thought I’d grow up and drive such a car. Unfortunately, column shifters were phased out when I was ready to buy a car. Heck, I can’t even rent them. The video would be more enjoyable if the present weren’t waxing eloquent; it looks like he likes to hear himself talk.

Old memories refreshed...The car that started my love affair with automobiles...was a long haul vehicle and my dad drove it for over 15 years through which we might have repainted itnin different shades at least 4-5 times...yes those were the days 😀...only regret never really driving it coz we moved on to the 800 after I turned 18 😜and believe it or not sold it to scrap yard for a mere 15k...but still reminisce the times when dad would allow me to shift to neutral to start and just heat the engine up 😂

@@evoIndia Mine is a similar story as well. My dad literally gave it away free to one of our staff's family because we did not have any more parking space to keep the car. When I was a small kid, I used to go sit in the car and pretended like I was driving (like how they do it in old movies, turning around the steering wheel vigorously assuming that's what it meant to go fast). I have never really driven it and yeah I regret it too because by the time I learnt driving, we had already moved on to a santro.

I owned Fiat 1100 D from 1988 to 1990.I used to extract 14 km per litre average on that old engine. It was really powerful and in 4th gear after 60 km speed gave sweet sound of sports car. I traveled a lot, really a lot in those two years. Since it was a 1967 model and I was the fourth owner, the body and tin was deteriorating. I have very sweet memories of that car. 1100 D was really a nice car. Then in 1994 I purchased brand new 137 D, Air conditioned, floor gear, bucket front seats. The engine was too noisy.After traveling some 20 km the noise used to subside as well as the car could give tough competition to any car on road. It was a white car and I had put on white chicken curtains. People used to stare to the stylish car and I used to feel my ego rising. I completed 65000 km in 3.5 years, without any repairs. Except the engine noise, the car was most comfortable due to bucket seats, floor gear and A C. In those days it was a Luxury car. Diesel was one third price of petrol then. My friend used to run his petrol Padmini at 120 km regularly. I hardly dared this speed. I love Fiat/Premier even today.

Good shooting and editing!! I had a Padmini for 12 years and have fond memories of it. We also ran a 'Fiat Classic Car Club' in Pune. One advantage of the steering column gearshift was / is that you can fit one more person on the front seat (i.e. 3 people, not 2) and...your loved one can sit REALLY close to you🤪! This actually happened with me - my newly wedded friend used to borrow my Padmini for rides, parking his Maruti 800 (long bonnet, first lot) in my garage. After a while he shared his real motive with me🙄🤗!!!

Yes! We bought a 78 model White Fiat in 1989. My dad was the second owner. It had problems all the time, some thing will be broken all the time mostly the electricals. I dont remember a time when all the things worked all at once. The body was really strong and it never felt cramped by the standards back then. it was a an 8 seater for all the picnics and we never felt any thing unusual about it. The mileage was around 10-12 for a liter of petrol. Great memories!

Your review just took me a lot of decades back and I was able to recall the moment when I also sat beside him like you said you did, and enjoy the gushing wind and the vrooming sound. We had both the Ambassador and a Fiat and I felt at ease in the Fiat. The sound and the feel inside is a Fiat was much crisp and soft than an Ambassador and the little rattling noise it made, probably was of the drive shaft passing below the seats, made me feel very sport and all I can recall is the vrooming sound it made. I love this car, one of the cars that I drove as an unlicensed teenager then. Thanks for the effort to spell cast a bunch of memories... Lots of love...

Great coverage of the erstwhile FIAT/Premier Padmini cars that touched the lives of almost everyone in our generation. There was also one more model - the Premier Padmini Economy. It had black bumpers rather than chrome plated ones. I don't know what else was knocked off the sparce list of equipment on the interior, and despite the fact that we had nothing better around to compare it with at the time, it looked really SUB-STANDARD.

I have a Premier Padmini in great running condition. It is my first car and I do not intend selling it. On the road, my Padmini makes many heads turn. When I park it someplace and go to a restaurant or shop, I usually find a few people gathered around the car. They tell me their father owned a similar car and recounted fond memories. We have gone for many long drives, from Chennai to Bangalore, Mysore, Vailankanni, Kottayam and many other places with a full load. I never had a breakdown on long drives. Today, the problem is in getting spares. The few shops that have them jack up the price when selling them. I am still looking for a set of windshield wiper arms and blades. Thankfully, we do not have many rainy days in Chennai. We use the Esteem or the Swift for daily use.

Till the insurance guys refused to insure it (because of 15 years of life). I have driven it from 1989 till 2004. Loved that car too tooo much. Thanks for reviving my memories. The owner company Mr. Doshi didn't anything to revive it. one of the biggest error in PP was that it still had a handbrake under the left front seat. Great video guys! This brings back fond memories of my childhood. My dad's first car was a black Fiat Super Select. Traded that for an even older Blue Fiat 1100/1100E not sure which one it was. Next was the Premier Padmini. Then an 800. Now we've got a Palio and a Linea. :)

My grandfather used to own one of these. The Fiat, yeah that's what I used to call it. I loved it alot and have many memories with that car. But unfortunately it was scraped away. I wish I would have restored it and kept it for myself.

In the early 90’s, my dad had a white fiat padmini with tan interior and a sporty 3 spoke steering wheel (aftermarket). It was in great condition and we were proud of it. One day, we were driving up a steep incline in Bangalore and were faced with a dreaded speed bump! My dad simply couldn’t find the first gear! We spent 15 mins trying to drive over the bump and finally managed it, barely! This was the last time my mum got into that car. Dad bought his first Maruti after that! 😆

My mum and dad actually did have a 1995 model fiat...i used to get dropped off at school...i still remember the custom made music system we wired in for some entertainment...the boot space was so much too in comparison to a maruti 800 those days...unfortunately we sold the car in 2012 as we started to got a lot of issues on the engine side...but still good memories never fade

Hey awesome video again. Bought back lots of childhood memories. My dad owned the Ambassador, Fiat 1100 D and finally the Padmini. My love affair with cars began with the Padmini and I learnt my driving on it in early 1992. I wish my father hadn't sold it. I would have definitely kept it as a vintage car. Today's generation won't know what it is to use hand gears. I am little old school thought and I believe that to master driving one must learn driving on hand gear cars. I could be probably wrong too. Alas they don't make those anymore. You guys should make a video on Contessa Classic, Standard 2000 (if you manage to get your hands on a Standard 2000), Tata Estate, Tata Sierra. Cheers.

Nice cars but the presenter is clueless about these old cars. The front bench seat slides back and forth to accommodate taller drivers, there was no need to make a scene of it. Please learn about the cars beforehand.
@toonwarrior
@toonwarrior 3 жыл бұрын
and that makes him clueless? Regardless if the seat can move back or not the roofline isn't changing so if you are tall it will be cramped no matter how far back your seat is, unless you plan on lying down and driving.

My dad had fiat 1100 to the Padmini. I do not remember the seats moving back. It’s only when we got our first maruti did we get the concept of movable seats!!

You know.. My dad had this 1100d.. Just almost the same color.. Except the colour was a result of a mashed up Paint job.. It was supposed to be milky green but became this odd blue.. But we were the only family with this color Fiat. We drove long n wide in it.. And i have special memories.. I literally learnt how to drive, sitting between my Mom n Dad.. On the bench seat. I pushed it up and down our garage to wash n soap it and then gradually moved to start it up, reverse it out of the garage and then drive it slowly up.. Till one day... Whammo i scratched the full left side on the doors!!! And thus the new colour... Lols.. Brought back beautiful memories, did your video, really.. Waiting to see one of the 118Ne, the Contessa, the Standard 2000, the Uno, the Gypsy... Aww these are all cars I drove apart from my Amby / Maruti 800 which you have already shown!

Evo India, kindly note that during 1960s to 1980s all automobile manufactures came under MRTP - Monopoly and Restrictive Trade Practices Act. Under this act the manufacturers have a certain given quota of car to manufacture per year. All parts have to procured locally. If they exceeded the quota, they were fined heavily. At that time India was concentrating only on public transport and agricultural transport vehicles. Limited foreign exchange was conserved for public and agricultural vehicles. All the provisions of Act were relaxed , when Maruti motors came into existence in 1980. Hence. blaming these car manufactures for quality or comfort was out of question. Research and Development was out of question.

I was twelve when I could drive Padmini .. I would wash the car myself so my father would let me start the car and rev while standing still.. a few months later I was allowed to put it in gear and drive, of course under supervision.. and yeah I still think it is super simple and easy to drive, maybe not fast, but to commute, very easy ... Also the petrol motor was super smooth if tuned right n in good condition.. you could hardly hear it ticking on idle.. and the exhaust note amazing, again, several forms of tuning there too .. also the Autocar drag race had a tuned Amby against stock Fiat.. not fair.
