We own both these models, We still have 3 Sierras, 1992, 1995 and 1996 Sierras and 1993 Estate. We unfortunately had to sell off our Estate about 10 years back, but retained all 3 Sierras. This video brought back lot of memories from my childhood. Thanks for the awesome quality content. Those ultramile MT tyres and alloys look sick on the turbo sierra. awesome.

Just a tiny correction: the X2 platform debuted with the Aria and was subsequently used on Safari Storme and Hexa. The Sierra and Estate (and even the first Safari) were based on the old Tatamobile 206 pickup platform which was probably partially derived from the 407 light truck. The X1 platform on the other hand was used to refer to the one used on the Indica Vista, Manza, Zest, Bolt and now the Nexon.

Spent at least 300 km during my childhood traveling in uncle’s Sierra; didn’t understood the kind of suffocation the elders suffered as I was like a curious little monkey in a whole new world. It actually taught me how to love a car and what could be the future. Haven’t been in touch with Estate as it was a rare species but spent a lot in Sumo, the proper 4door rugged SUV. Couple of years ago, when Tata totally discontinued its body on frame species, it was taken as unavoidable hard reality; though expecting them to bring Yeti like product as Sierra. New Sierra is good, but will miss out the OG Sierra’s swag.

Nostalgic episode Sirish. I have heard from mechanics that owners who kept the sierra for a ling time, either tried swapping their engines with the later model Sumo or Safari because the Sierra engine block had issues with water getting in or something. Quality control had significantly improved by the time the Safari was launched. We would love to see similar classic restorations of old cars. Old Fiat 1100s, 118 NE, Ambys, Contessas. I only wish the Indian government allowed engine swapping. A lot of these old giants would still be on our roads. They had tons of character, they just needed better hearts. With the vehicle scrapping policy, it would be heartbreaking to see these old goats head to the crusher.

As a kid i remember knowing about the Sumo through a little scale model toy. I instantly loved the way it look & feel...only later to realise it's an actual vehicle when my parents did trips to distant relatives. It was a new vehicle back then but soon became a household name cause it was literally everywhere as tourist permit transport.

I had a maroon Sierra Turbo 1998 - kept her for a year but had to sell because I moved abroad. Man what a truck that was. I faced none of the practicality issues.. if you push the front seat way up front and fold down the backrest, there’s ample space to exit and enter into the back. AC has never had problem but yes the back is relatively hot. Suspension needed some work with but the engine and gearbox never gave any issues.. miss that rig… ❤

Great video. Really loved how you combined the trend of those times, your affection for the Sierra and Estate as a child and the emotion that was beautifully conveyed through your voice. Sierra and the first-gen Safari and Indica hold special place in my heart too as they were all special in more than one way. Similarly, you can bring a Daewoo Matiz and Cielo on next episode ( I know finding these would be really difficult but it would be great if you can) and describe the whammy Korean carmaker's journey in India.

From January 1994 to November 2005, our Family Car was the Tata Estate. The one featured in the video is a later version as the first ones had all four power windows buttons on the driver door. The suspension was awesome and bumps rarely came up to the cabin. Top speed we clocked was around 108 kmph. Gear arrangement for the first and reverse meant we needed to be alert as the other car was a Zen. The boot could house 4-US size bags with ease. Major issues to name were the sump was a bit low and we had leaks more than once and if the power steering booster failed, it was a handful to drive as the steering at full gave only half the outcome. So impressive was our experience with the Estate that it was succeeded by the Indigo Marina till June 2019.

Tata Sierra was my first suv crush 😍, I use to cut sierras pictures from magzines and newspapers i had made collage book with all those old cars. Yeah i am from 90s but I feel sad that we Indians don't respect our old cars and don't restore them much even the rto rules don't allow to modify them as per emission norms by swapping with new engines. But I hope with new age ev tech that could be very possible.

This is the funniest Indian car review I have ever seen. Growing up I was fascinated by Sierra and its rear coil suspension which would eat up a speed breaker without any noticeable movement in the car. Estate for me was the kind of a car that only the those old rich men would own. And those ads for these two cars were really impressive and would never get bored watching them many times. Also, the DC design SIerra looked really cool. It feels silly now for having that emotional reaction to these metal beasts. Thank you for taking effort on reviewing it for us

Tata Sierra still looks best. A dream suv design. The only other car with something similar type of rear geen huge glass would be Gurkha. I wish tata motors retain the retro style of this, as current ev looks like messes up n different on C/D Pillar. N huge respect for the owners of this two gems for keeping them alive, it's not easy job to maintain n keep alive these cars for long these days.

Hi Shirish, how about a feature on the Standard 2000 and the Contessa Classic? Those were really powerful cars. A feature on the Rover Montego would also do good. I remember, as a kid, heading to school in then Madras in a rickety school van, I had first set eyes on a Rover Montego (around 1993, I guess) near the then Chola Sheraton. Was olive green in color and a stunner. It had just pulled up beside our van at a traffic junction. Couldn’t take my eyes of that beauty. That scene’s forever etched in mind. What days they were.

In the early 1990’s a chap who owned either a Tata Sierra or a Tata Estate, had to be a ‘big shot’. Normal people couldn’t afford one of these. Early on it had that 1948 cc Tata Naturally aspirated diesel engine. Then in the mid to late 1990’s they introduced the Turbo 2143 cc diesel engine with the Borg Warner Electric Shift on the Fly 4WD system, operated by a switch located near the gear lever on the console. The same engine did duty in the Sumi and Safari and all. Outlook Magazine had these as subscription gifts in a lucky draw. I can’t remember how many times I filled that subscription form and subscribed, but sadly, never won a Sierra.

TATA SUMO was the real successor of the DNA of the OG Sierra and Safaris. Sumo got rid of all the impractical or let’s say the bells and whistles of the earlier vehicles. This is what helped to take the Tata to the masses.

Since AVINYA is a concept to demonstrate Tata's design & technology prowess, production spec car should be called e-STATE. At least, if they intend to make a three row iteration of AVINYA. Sierra & AVINYA production versions both will be banger 🔥♥️ for 2025.

Truly sensational cars from our home grown brand which were much ahead of the time. Growing up, I loved the Sierra and the Estate and always dreamt of owning one some day. That was the time we were going around in a MS 800, however now I would love to get my hands on the new Sierra. I beg to slightly differ when you say 3 door SUV's did not work or will not work, I say people would love 3 door niche products today more then ever considering most of the families are nuclear now and most adults have their personal cars. I wish they had still retained the curved glass which made it an iconic differentiating factor.
