Fiat 500 1.2 Clutch Slave Cylinder Replacement with a hack to make it easier

This car came to me to replace the clutch slave cylinder. This car featured on another KZbin channel. The car had a refurbishment done to the gearbox and a new clutch but the new driver was having problems changing gear. Mainly getting the car out of first when pulling away. Gears got stuck and she could not get it out of gear unless she stopped the engine. Her dad lives near me so I was asked to see if I could sort it out.
Sid it go according to plan? Well not quite, but we got it done in the end.
A good hack to save you a lot of time and grief though, even though it was battling with me.

Seems straight forward provided the pipe plays ball ! Bearing in mind gears are usually stiff from cold, especially 1st !it's when it's up to temp then shouldn't be.. I had seicento thst refused to go it gear, it was the selector arm connected to the cables that has seized but just needed freeing and lubing up thst cured it, its a shame the slave cylinder in not internal like other brands to protect it but then you'd need to remove the gearbox to replace it 🙈😄

I'd always (and I mean ALWAYS!) put new fluïd in the system and bleed it till fresh fluïd comes out. Especially if it's older than 2 years. Not as critical as brakes, but might save a lot of trouble a little later. gr J

@@Love500 . Thanks for getting back to me. By any chance have you worked on the 3rd brake light at the back? I need to remove it as the mould is coming from under it. Have treated it already but it keeps coming back. Will need to do it again at some point and then hit it with the water beading agent. I'm using the autoglym double set for this.

@@satnamboll you are talking about a convertible I assume? I’ve never taken one out as I painted one on the car. So I’ve read, you need plenty of silicone when you put it back. It’s only a couple of bolts I believe.

Do you do videos on the dualogic ones? Do the AMT dualogic ones have slave cylinders?

@@CatherineThompson98 no they don’t but they do have a selespeed fluid reservoir which can often be low fluid or contaminated fluid. It’s always worth getting it topped up or changed.

Brilliant little video Paul, what lenght of time did it take to carry out the task, did you have to bleed the cylinder after fitting? if so, could of been helpful to show this being done, but you did explain in words, brilliant job, and seems thou the owner had spent money when not needed. 👍

I didn't show bleeding because it didn't need bleeding. I assume you haven't watched it until the end as I did say it didn't need bleeding. When the clip comes out easily, it's a literally 10 minute job start to finish. It took me about an hour due to the time it took me to break the surrounding plastic of the old cylinder to get the clip out. It's not normally like that, it will normally come straight out with a pick or small screwdriver under it.

@@simonlaland yes Luk. Cheap and my mobile guy said they are one of the best.

Most likely it just needed bleeding properly. If there is any air in system it will cause a spongy clutch with insufficient movement at slave cylinder to fully release the clutch. This will manifest in difficulty engaging or disengaging gears - especially first and reverse. They are quite difficult to bleed properly 👍

Looking at the state of the gearbox area I would say that box has NEVER been out and fixed

Well it has apparently, doesn't necessarily mean they did any type of cleaning though I suppose.

Judging by the generous amount of silicon gasket sealant oozing out of the joints if it was rebuilt it was probably a bodge job.
