The common theme is they're all outside in UV. Boats are made out of fiberglass butnthy have a lot of paint and gel coats on them. So maybe people need to paint them w several layers of paint when brand new

well mate i call bullshit.....lolol I will too. We put a few in and I haven't seen one make it 10 years yet. Our vendors have been pushing us hard to switch to fiberglass tanks for a while and we haven't switched and don't plan to. Hard to beat changing out a well x trol or flexcon that has been installed 20+ years. Metal tanks still rule the roost around here, but it seems like you see more fiberglass tanks where you are. I'm like you, I can count on one hand the number of fiberglass tanks that have made it 15 years or more. Good video, keep em coming. Grant

Thanks Grant, Yea fiberglass are a big problem down here. I get it I used to work for the company that put these in exclusively. They are light weight and the thought sounds good no rust! They just don't do the job for very long, worst yet is the waterlogged situation. Customers tend to get to complacent and expect everything to be perfect. Then they wake up to brush their teeth and the pump motor is burnt up. Then I have to tell them I have to replace the whole system! How could this happen they ask a week ago the water pressure was not great but it was working...... Tried and True those glasslind tanks from AO smith / State water systems now. Thanks for the comment and watching. Casey

Curious question as my fiberglass tank just split. I asked the well company about metal and plastic tanks. They told me they only have a 2 and 3 year warranty where the fiberglass has a 5 year. I had this tank warrantied 3 years ago so a new tank every 3 years sucks and looking for options. I do have full sun beat down on my tank, not sure this is an issue.

But a month ago or so, it appears a crack on the fiberglass layer, the inner plastic layer seems to be ok, no leaks and still working ok. Can i repair this with fiberglass , or it's about time for the plastic layer to break down too?

Just looked at a tank for a family member and it was one of these new "well mate" what you got there is one of those new fiberglass beauty's" I fell victim to it I must admit. I said to her "I've worked on a handful of tanks over the years and I didn't know they made em out of fiberglass - what a great idea = no sweating, and no rusting inside or out - that tank might never go bad" ........ "Oh wait there's a leak. Must be the inlet wasn't installed correctly, I'll take care of it........ Oh wait, there's a trail.... and it leads right to the... Piece of Shit Fiberglass Tank Has A Hole In It and you say its less than ten years old? Its only 8 years old? Well I'll go home and get on the internet and see what I can find out". What I found is a man who knows his business educating those with sense enough to listen. One more thing I settled on a Bradford /White water heater and that's a seriously old school "well" made unit = any idea if they make pressure tanks, either way thanks.

What AO smith is glass lined? I’ve had an ao smith for 18 year plus another 9 with the previous owner. Two tanks in series, the first corroded at the inlet fitting 12 or so years ago but the other one is still going. I’m not pressing my luck and will be buying two more. I’m leaning towards well xtrol but fear they too are living on their 30 year old reputation. Can you please tell us about the ao smith? Thanks!

You hit the nail right on the head! I'm sorry when I said AO Smith they are now called state water systems, a subsidiary of AO Smith. The tanks are steel and the glass lining is a clear ceramic coating that is baked on. You are surely right about wellxtrol tanks as the older tanks were Bulletproof. As with all companies now it's all about the cheapest to manufacture, cutting cost on all materials and labor results in common problems. Most tanks still carry long year warranties but will fail under warranty and could get unnoticed. You really have to decide what type of tank you need for your application and water conditions. Do you have a submersible or above-ground pump do you require filtration?

Newer tanks have a heavy epoxy UV coating. Here in East Texas we use Hydro pneumatic tanks. It's just a tank... no bladder. They are only found in areas where water quality requires them. Water and air are mixed together in a hydro pneumatic tank to reduce the "rotten egg" smell that sulphur bacteria and hydrogen sulphide gas in the water can cause. My question is I know there is a bleeder valve down under that allows water to drain back into the well and shuts when the well restarts. I believe this is so the air in the downpipe is used to recharge the tank and a float valve in the side of the tank controls the amount of air in the tank. I currently have a 40 gal tank and want to replace it with a 120. Is the depth of that bleeder dependent on the size of the tank?
@ClearWaterPumpWell
@ClearWaterPumpWell 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I know tank manufacturers claim there is better UV protection, but it's worse than it was 20 years ago when there was none. Changing your tank to a 120 is a good idea if you can afford it. It will give more capacity to reduce the H2S in high demand use. The weep hole should be at minimum 15' below snifter valve or well casing. If you hear a good burp of air now when pump comes on it will be plenty. Efficient removal of H2S requires little air but more time to dissipate into air pocket. So technically the more air you have coming in and going out the better along with more storage space. Also a metal tank is better suited in your case because of the hydrogen sulfide gas it helps protect metal from corrosion. So if you decide to replace your tank to a 120 gallon I recommend a.o. Smith glass lined tank which should last you more than 30 years.

Lol yea that's what the factory claims too, they can be in a shed for 10 years and still fail. What people don't realize is the sun has little to nothing to do with the point of failure. The plastic liner is a defective design that fails just from natural expansion and contraction as pressure goes up and down. I show this in the dang video and you think sunlight is affecting that? Only thing sunlight affects is the so called UV later they removed and now the top pops in less than 10 years of exposure. Again I don't install these tanks at all I just remove and replace them with Steel!

With the tanks leaking, why do the pumps fail? I’m confused
@ClearWaterPumpWell
@ClearWaterPumpWell Жыл бұрын
Because the tank is no longer serving it's purpose to store water as all the air leaked out! The compressed air in the tank is what stores the water. When one of these tanks gets a leak on top all the air drains and the pump begins to short cycle. This is known as a waterlogged tank and is the leading cause of pump failure. When a pump runs it needs to have a long cycle time of atleast over 30 seconds. When waterlogged it can be a little as a few seconds or near instant. When the motor starts and stops so quickly the windings heat up and will burn out. The thermal overload should protect them but they rarely do as they keep turning back on after cooling off. To make matters worse the leak will make the pump run without customer using water. So over night or weeks go by and the pump is continuously starting and stopping until it burns up.

@ClearWaterPumpWell
@ClearWaterPumpWell 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean exactly, all these tanks were defective and caused pump problems. I would never use a well pressure tank for auxiliary compressor tanks! They are mostly only rated for 75 psi, a standard compressor shuts off usually over 125 psi. Do you know how much energy is in a large tank of air at that pressure? It's quite literally a air bomb and not designed for that purpose. Most well pumps won't go over 100 PSI and have way less air volume in the tanks due to being full of air. Stay safe and don't use tanks not intended for the purpose.

These fiberglass tanks even in a shed fail because of the inherent flaws they have! The worst part about how they fail is leaking at the top causing them to waterlogged. A waterlogged tank is the leading cause of pump motor failure and gets easily overlooked. The tank will go from working one day to completely failed the next and most homeowners don't notice. So please spare people of an unprofessional opinion that "Any Tank" will fail out in the weather!

@@ClearWaterPumpWell I live in Ireland and I mean no one that's no one has a tank and pump exposed to the elements,everyone builds a pump house, or has tank or pump indoors,you will half the life of any system if it's out in the weather,cold climates hot climates,don't need to be professional to know that it's common sense,garden furniture varnish plastic things bleach and crumble,boats have a gelcoat to protect fiberglass,tanks do not,it's obvious the top leaks first it gets more sun and wetting then the rest of the tank

@@paulmurphy8549 Ok Mr. Paul I understand where your coming from, but look your missing the point here. These Fiberglass tanks fail indoors in a garage or weather protected ill regardless! Obviously if you live in a northern cold climate having any system with water exposed to elements means failure in the winter. We live in the south here and rarely get any freezing weather and don't have to invest in cold weather protections. So ultimately I would love if everyone had a shed around their well, but some I wish they didn't. People just build over it not thinking of how its to be serviced in the future. They put a door right up against a tank so you can't get in or put the pump back in the corner. I have even seen people pour concrete around the tank and it has to be destroyed in order to replace it! So I'm happy to go work on a fully exposed system that you can get to every part on it and repair or replace quickly.

Pretty sure they are not ment to be exposed outside to the elements. Half the tanks shown in video are heavily damaged by UV rays.

That they are and they can fail for that reason too. What your diverting away from is the fact that it doesn't matter how they fail. They just fail whether or not in the sun or a shed and majority in less than 10 Years. Why buy something that is not really cheaper, not recyclable, causes damage to your system and fails sooner than a Metal tank? Metal tanks can be installed anywhere. I just want people to understand why these are utterly garbage products. Btw I did not install these tanks another company did that gives no hell about the quality of workmanship or reliability!

@@ClearWaterPumpWell I have pretty acidic water (low ph)which leads to corrosion of well tanks and hot water heaters. Water heaters used to last me 2-3 years no matter which brand. Until I got a plastic one which has been 10 yrs so far. Reason I’m looking into fiberglass is so that I don’t have to worry about rust outs. Welltroll brand lasted me 3 years. Do you have any recommendation for a best quality steel, or fiberglass(or are all fiberglass junk)? BTW, looking into a water treatment system for the well, but until then gotta head in this direction.

I have a metal tank and we have had to replace the metals tanks 4 times in 20 to 25 years. Any suggestions?

What type of water condition, do you have is it acidic water? What brand of tank are u using? Don't use epoxy lined tanks they are thin and coating is not good. Look into a glass lined steel tank from AO Smith or Amtrol. These are better quality and thicker metal and the coating of ceramic is way better. Around here the water can be very acidic and the tanks still last around 20 years! Fiberglass tanks are not reliable at all and can fail at random times with premature pump failure as a result of it! They are a last resort and should be watched like a hawk to prevent pump damage. Thanks for the comment and watching, Casey

@@joycemoore5598 usually a bladder tank would be best because you can install a water softener that works well with it.

So your gonna climb inside a 2" hole and plastic weld a tank 6' at the top and it last more than a day? Do you even understand how fiberglass pressure tanks are constructed? The fiberglass is not the water tight portion it is only for structural support. The plastic liner of the tank inside is what has failed and can "NOT" be repaired!
