Weaving Waffle Weave spa style cloths been on my mind for a while, but it's finally time! I will use linen and rayon yarns today to weave some spa style cloths to give as gifts, or at least as samples to use when I get ready to do the gifts!
weaving Waffle weave is easy once you know the steps, so I hope you'll give it a try after this! Cotton would also be nice, but I thought linen would be a slightly more luxurious way to go, since we all need to relax a little during the holidays.

Great idea, I found a few huge cones of similar weights and colors of yarn at Unity Hospice Thrift store yesterday. I left the cones there not knowing what I would do with them. After seeing your video I’m going back and see if I can figure out what the yarn content is. Who am I fooling, I’ll probably go back and get them no matter what the yarn content is, good price and great cause, all the money goes to Hospice. Thanks 🙏🏻

Wonderful gift idea! I never realized how much I did for everyone until I became a single working mom. My first Christmas I worked the day before and the day after. I baked and cooked all day Christmas Day and at the end of the day I was in tears from exhaustion. Not to mention Christmas shopping prior to it and wrapping. It was the worst Christmas I have ever had. Needles to say I learned a lesson and I stopped doing so much after that. It is my Christmas too. 🤗. I gave a giving heart as well and have always believed you show love by action not words. However I have found since being sick for a long time not many people are like that. I still find ways to bless others though. It does my heart good. 💜

Most Christmas music I could take or leave. However I've been known to listen to Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas albums throughout the year. I've been slipping the past couple of years or so and haven't listened to them much. I haven't listened to them at all yet this year. I might have to rectify this situation after watching this video. I think those are the biggest cones I've ever seen. My loom arrived Friday. I assembled it yesterday, and made my first attempt at warping, dressing, and weaving today. It went better than expected. I've only had time to weave a few inches so far. I ended up with something that more closely resembles fabric than I was expecting for my first attempt. My loom came with an 8-dent heddle. I sacrificed some inexpensive acrylic worsted weight yarn I've had for years for my initial attempt. Fortunately it's more pleasant to weave with than to knit with. During the warping and dressing stages I began to wonder if weaving was worth the tedium of warping and dressing. I started with a roughly 12" wide warp. I probably should have started with less. I had the loom warped and partially dressed before I thoughtoif putting on some music. A little classical music to the rescue. I put on Bach's unaccompanied suite for cello performed by Yo-Yo Ma. The remainder of the dressing didn't seem tedious at all. Before I knew it I was done and ready to start weaving. I think I'm hooked. For additional weaving I'll probably switch to jazz.

Those are really nice cloths, the one with the linen weft will soften with use and out last the blend. I'm not sure if you meant rayon (regenerated cellulose) or ramie (Chinese nettle) was in the blend, either way the linen will be the fibre that lasts longest.

I love how straight you got the selvages! And I'm totally drooling over all. that. LINEN!!!!! Did you have to mist it at all while you were weaving it? On the dishtowels I've got on the loom at my school, I brought in a spray water bottle because I started having problems with the warp threads frazzling (from going through metal heddles and metal reed...it's a floor loom) because linen is a lot stronger wet.
@FiberLoveDiary
@FiberLoveDiary 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I have my own selvage method, and I have thought about making a video, but I worry that using words to describe it will be too difficult, because it's really kind of a "feel" thing? Do you have an opinion on that? I did not mist it. I only noticed a VERY slight fuzz on the warp yarn, nothing unusual. I think honestly rigid heddle is easier on warp, because there is less tension. That's why i use handspun for warp on it so often. BUT, I am definitely going to keep the mister trick in my back pocket for the future. I had not thought of it at all.

@@FiberLoveDiary I finally got those linen towels off the loom after nearly THREE YEARS! I'm in the Los Angeles area; all in person classes had been shut down from March 2020 until February '22 (and then I had to weave the project off!). Our class was finally allowed back, full hours in person sessions this past fall. (Husband is still working from home 3 days a week! Until yesterday, we still had to mask to go in to the doctor or the dentist!) Now I have to finish the towels. Rigid heddle makes for a lot less abrasion on the warp because most of them are a nice "soft" plastic instead of metal wires. As far as selvages, I can get very control freaky. I use a floating selvage on either side of the project: I run a doubled warp thread on each side of my warp (this is on a floor loom) through the reed but not through any of the heddles (a.k.a. floating selvage), either as part of the warp or hung off the the back beam on a weight. I use old (empty, cleaned) prescription bottles and fill them with marbles, spare change, etc. for the weights. You can wind up the extra thread yardage and stuff it in the bottle and crank the lid on. The thread/yarn will stay put and keep tension. I usually advance my floaters when I advance the warp. I'm not sure how I'd do a floating selvage on a rigid heddle...obviously I'd run it through the slots...have to think about that.

Trish, why did you cross some threads at the beginning of warping?

This is the first weaving video of yours that I have watched. Is that blueprint paper you use?

Thanks for asking this! I forgot to link it in the description box, so I have fixed that. You are on the right track, but not exactly. You can grab that link in the description if you're interested. I love this stuff. It is super tough and it doesn't crumple up, tear, or get weaker with use so you have to throw it out.

I have just brought myself a Rigid heddle loom and I was wondering about the section when you hem the edge, once you do the zig zag stitch do you then wash and cut the edge or do you cut then wash? Thank you

So, for me, I trim the ends before washing. I found (about two years ago) that if I had too many loose warp ends when washing, it was just that much more likely to get tangled or pulled. BUT, don't wash it without zig zagging over that hem stitch!

I'm also interested in the warping bar. I just received a rigid heddle loom and the first project I chose with an 18 inch warp width took me a long time to master, being able to roll the warp ends neatly and take it to the loom would have saved me so much time and tangles as i was learning to do it. I learned a lot from this video from recognizing the skipped slot and managing the ends. Thank you for this and for the birds!
