@@mollymiller3720 I guess some of us tend to anthropomorphasize them, expecting them to have human morals etc. But we must realise that they are living on the edge of starvation and survival and have to take advantage of any opportunity. It doesn't make me love all animals any less. I think though that we DO have morals and understanding and if only we'd try more to be the respectful custodians of earth and its creatures it could be a better place. I feel deep shame knowing that we've annihilated many species; passenger pigeons being an example. One of the saddest things I've ever watched is that old grainy footage of the last Thylacine/Tasmsnian Tiger. They don't know "right or wrong" but we do. But then I'm a hopeless sentimentalist. 😔 Ps, I did notice a comment mentioning using raptors as a deterrent, I have no problem with that.

That was an absolutely awful shock to watch - I was expecting a nice informative nature video and instead straight away I'm confronted with a massacre of wildlife who have Just as much right to the fruits of the land as we do! I am sure there are other methods of protecting a large percentage of crops without resorting to this basic method. People need to remembe too thatr nature does not tolerate a vacuum- create a space and either another family or another species Will fill it
@comradegotogulag8513 Жыл бұрын
There are other methods, but if you've got an immediate pest problem that needs sorting out and you've got profit in mind with your yield your not gonna mess around with temporary solutions like noisemakers, decoys or scarecrows corvids are an intelligent family of birds they'll soon learn that these things won't harm them, you kill some of them off your problems solved, simples. Who says they have a right to the fruits of the land?, who says anyone or anything has right to the fruits of the land?, its not about rights its about self interest, survival and competition.

I wish however you treat animals happens to you, you deserve it. i am absolutely disgusted and repulsed. What a disconnect in their heart. imagine what trauma they must have experienced in life to be able to kill animals and not even feel anything. I agree it wasn't a nice thing to hear 50+ Corvids were shot. For instance i really like Magpies and I'm currently feeding a young Magpie he lands on my fence, i put some seeds and bread out every morning, now I have 4 or 5 magpies coming to be fed. There are over 600.000 Magpie pairs in the wild in the UK alone, that is with a survival rate for young sitting at 22%. So you can imagine just how many Crows and Rooks and Jackdaws there are. A farmer protecting his field won't even put a dent in the UK Corvid population. While I'm an animal lover, i am also a realist and i have to take in to account the farmer, his family, his land, his investment. It's easy for City folk to take this opinion. But just imagine it's your livelihood and your house on the line, because a certain group of birds are stripping your fields bare. Just spare a thought for the farmer next time you buy bread, cereal, flour, beer or spirits. All that grain is grown somewhere and there would be empty shelves if farmers did nothing to protect their crops. Also in this very video the farmer had tried to use none lethal deterrents. So that says a lot, like that this was a last resort.

If you have been brought up as a country man , wing movement in flight are noticable even at distance wing, tail , head and beak even before they are in range are noticable, same with pigeons and doves. I have enjoyed shooting and still do for over sixty years, and have long advocated that as well teaching someone to shoot well. They should be schooled in what and why they are shooting them. Also people have little perception of distance and are often surprised how close a 35/45 bird is, shooting at birds way out
@Mackeson33 жыл бұрын
Yes corvids are intelligent, for that reason the best thing to do after shooting a few is to hang one or two up . Hang them between two sticks with their wings outstretched in the middle of the field. If there is anything a corvid hates to see is one of it's number dead in an unnatural pose. ( Try that with a dead pigeon it wouldn't make any difference, the pigeons would just come back because pigeons are pretty dumb!) a dead rook hanging from a walnut tree helps to stop them stealing your walnuts too 😉
