Any idea what the wave heights are in open water . Definitely looking ferocious as it comes on shore .
@chuckg603910 ай бұрын
A few miles off shore, the waves today were generally 8 to 10 feet ...with occasional up to 13 feet (with a period of 6 seconds between crests) per a popular weather site which measures wind and waves.

Mike and all Boat Friend Nation, from a frozen Bismarck where we have had foggy, misty, rain and wind, and everything is covered with a half inch of ice. That is probably the worst wind for the Big Lake as it has traveled a long ways to hit Duluth, and it just keeps building the whole time till it hits…. Mother Nature letting us know who is boss, that is for sure…. Amazing how those waves were coming in over the cement, and the power that water has is unbelievable. The water spray when this windy and cold actually feels like little hailstones hitting your face, and man is that cold! Been there and done that! That was a great show Mike, and I appreciate your efforts in that weather!!!

It’s always fun, watching mother nature flex, her muscles with these big lakes, and the waves for sure. The weather is no joke in Duluth. It was a true pleasure being able to record this for you Jim.

Greg, I had to rubber boots on and rain gear, so I was able to get right out into all of that water on the piers! It was absolutely amazing seeing that water rush by me as the waves flew over the wall!🌊🌊🌊🌊

Wow Mike, the big Lake is angry today, and you are earning your money my friend! You get kind of an idea how bad the storm was in November of 1975 when the Fitz went down. That was much worse than this though….. Thanks for this , was Awesome!

Absolutely, it definitely makes me think of the Fitzgerald when I see this type of storm for sure. www.inforum.com/news/minnesota/how-the-edmund-fitzgeralds-sinking-inspired-advances-in-storm-navigation

Great video. I love the North Country. Interesting to see what's going on up there. I was up around Two Harbors couple summers ago videoing Ore Trains with my Son. Duluth has some interesting Museums too. We didn't see any big boats go through area.

Karl, absolutely Brother. I stayed a safe distance away from the walls, and I did not go all the way down to the lighthouse because I knew there could be huge waves that could push me down. I’m really happy that you enjoyed the video man. All the best to you.

These waves were really wild. Flying right over the wall.
@DressyBessie10 ай бұрын
Wow! That was exciting to see those wild waves come over the side of the pier! Can you imagine if all that water freezes on the pier? Do you have Trax for the ice? I really enjoy seeing ice on the trees but just not too much with power outages. You should be able to get some great filming this week! That cold wind now must have been a shock! I finally found a great pair of Himalayan mittens that are super warm with one opening for fingers and another for thumbs so you can still operate cameras and then easily warm them back up in between. They aren't too thick but are still very warm. Hope you can find something similar maybe.

Lori, friend, I told you these waves would get out of control at some point. This is the most powerful storm that I have recorded. One thing that was hard to record is the feeling I had. The powerful wind that would come off those waves as they hit as they flew over. The wall was unbelievable. You could feel the force and the power. I did not want to walk too far down the pier because I knew it would be dangerous. Unbelievable. I had a lot of fun, but there was a lot of adrenaline going in me at the same time.

You’re very right, that wind really amplified the cold on my hands. They started feeling numb after a while, so that’s why I cut the video somewhat short. It was just too cold out there and those waves are super powerful.

I shared this with a young friend with whom I shared Christmas dinner. I asked her if she missed the winters and it was an emphatic no on her part. We're in Seattle which is pretty benign in comparison to there even though you're having a mild winter. Her dad still lives there.

My pleasure. Love your content and am happy to have found you. If I could turn back time I would seriously consider this (Great Lakes shipping) as a career. Was in the Navy for four years (actual underway time of maybe 7 months) and loved every day of sea time. Not so much yard time. Have a buddy who was a seaman on one for a couple of years and from his description of it, I would have loved it. Oh well. Keep up your content and I'll enjoy it vicariously.
