What a great option to see if you will use the pattern often or while saving up for the acrylic templates.

The nice thing about the cutting mats from Dollar Tree is, they have one completely smooth side and one with a kind of rough side. If you do,your writing on the smooth side and place the rougher side on the fabric, it helps it not slide around quite as much. Plus, you get two mats for $1.

I use this for my patterns...but go a step further when I write on them with sharpies (they tend to rub off with alot of handling) I cover the written areas with a piece of clear packing tape to keep written parts intact on template 😊👍

Yup! I use the dollar tree flexible cutting "boards" for my quilting templates. Love this method, never even thought about getting acrylic ones 🤔

I so appreciate your sharing this!! I've been trying to come up with options for structure in some prototypes, those cutting boards are PERFECT, less dear than soft and stable, more rigid and quieter than Amazon bubble mailers. And I can look at the placemats also, both thrifted and cheapie new. I'd still like to reclaim or upcycle high volume clean trash, but it's a little much to try to do so during the design phase.

This is exactly what we used to do in the sign shop i worked at. So much easier. I use to score the line lightly before I used the marker so the ink sets into the plastic and won't rub off. Great for quilting

wait wait WAIT rn! I've been wanting to find thinner, flexible plastic sheets for my 3D media mischief. I've been cutting up the large plastic cutting boards from Dollarama for years now to extend their lifespan and functionality in the kitchen. Why it never occurred to me to branch out from there, I have no idea. But they will be PERFECT in all their awkwardly oversized glory to build the bones of whatever cat furniture I'm inclined to try. thankya thankya thnakya

I spy Cosmic :D! When I was making carved cakes I used 1/4" thick translucent corrugated plastic boards for templates. (Like what they use for lawn signs now, just translucent so traceable) While they are soft enough to be cut with an Xacto blade, they have enough depth for a rotary blade to push against laterally.

I really like the clear mediums for templates, because then matching fabric placement/fussy cutting is so much easier.

You can also laminate your prices using an iron on low heat and parchment paper. The paper goes between the iron and the pattern piece that is between the laminate material.

Yup! Still paper though. I wouldn't want to use the rotary blade :( That's MOSTLY why I advocate people save up for the acrylic templates. They're just a lot easier to deal with.

Your Rotary blade won't fall apart. My dad use a rotary blade to cut shingles on a roof! Just don't use the blade on fabric after you use it.

kitchen shears will cut the plastic very easily. I prefer the Betty Crocker kitchen shears from dollar tree. Actually, they are what I am currently using for fabric scissors. Dont laugh until you try them.. I was and am pleasantly surprised. I would buy professionally done templates and rulers IF I could afford them.

@fiercekittenz
@fiercekittenz 4 жыл бұрын
If you can see, I have another ruler that I use to ensure I have a straight line. I don't have very steady hands, so without using the ruler as a guide for the nib of the pen, it'll be super wobbly.
@CeciDJing
@CeciDJing 4 жыл бұрын
@@fiercekittenz I think you misunderstood me ;) I meant that you could just put the pattern to the edge of the mat, and then you wouldn't even need to draw or cut the first line, the mat already have å straight edge ;) Just an observation ;) Sorry if my English is bad, I am Norwegian, but I hope you understood what I mean. Btw, love your videos...
