I loved this film growing up. There's a lot to love about it. The music, the political messages, and the animation is pretty good too. Plus, it is notable for Wylie Burp being James Stewart's final role, and only voice acting role. I'm still not sure why John Cleese passed up _Beauty and the Beast's_ Cogsworth to voice the villain in this movie.

The sequel is pretty good. Positives 1. Cat R.Waul as a sophisticated villain and actually trying hide his cat instincts to execute his plan was kinda charming and scary how he can flip on dime if he wanted to. 2. Cathy Cavanidi singing as Tanya was actually surprising good. Good thing Cathy Cavanidi still continue her voice acting after this movie came out. Her song version is still holds up and classic. 3. Jimmy Stewart as Wiley Burp as old sheriff was good role and portrayed as old dog returns back retirement. Also, his cooperation with Tiger is hilarious because he is only dog doesn't chase or bite him despite him being cat. He shown to judge individuals based on their characters. 4. The Western town. Having the mice building the town was a nice touch and displaying their solutions to construction of the town with the cats help. 5. Native American mice. It was hilarious knowing these mice tribe are the only rodents that cats wouldn't go after because they show to shot a predator bird and eat it. Imagine how they would've help Tiger by chasing the cats out of town. 6. The animation art style. It is beautiful and so fluid, it was a treat to see it in gorgeous animation instead of looking like a cheap sequels straight video/DVD excuse. Negative 1. Cat R. Waul plan. It is dumb. Seriously, they have free labor force and could've taken advantage of it. Cat R. Waul could've had a group of mice become rancher for manageable animals like chickens or any avian species as payment for protection from the cats. You know, a updated callback from the first movie without cat pretending to be a rat. 2. The plot. It is messy pace follow. But, its fine and chaotic humor is still funny. 3. Cat R. Waul henchmen. The tarantula was shown to be only minion to be somewhat competent and actually does something productive at his job than the other cats. Weird that Waul didn't hired a Tegu, rattlesnake and scorpion as bandit minions to help him make things difficult for Fievel, Wiley Burp and Tiger. His cat henchmen were kinda a little generic and alright at most, they shown trashing the mice houses, talking to the boss and fighting at the climax. Really? The tarantula is the only minion to almost succeed at times, constantly being summoned by Waul and the eyes for his boss. The movie is fine as it own and the animation was such a great art style that went all out for a sequel.

I grew up with this movie but always kinda wished they took the tanya subplot and made that the focus of the film instead. The premise of a mouse becoming a performer for a saloon of cats just so unique to me (and the songs were some of the best part of the movie anyways)

A big assist is Spielberg being kept on and a bigger budget to match the look of Bluths originals. Aside from Land Before Time 2, nearly all the other non Bluth sequels and projects cheapened their animation and made them too kid friendly

So a few things to note here that weren’t mentioned. This version of Fieval is extremely popular it got its own show, it has its own section in Universal Studios(A play area for kids that’s kind of neat. It’s oversized human stuff made to look like a playground), the music plays in Universal as well, and that grown up version of Tanya is popular as well as on newer and heck sometimes even older copies of the original American Tail they used that model even if it makes no sense. I like Tanya’s songs and Cat R Waul is interesting because he has a conflict between being a posh reserved person and an animal, going back and forth on whether to just eat the mice or exploit them for free labor first. I really wish they had went deeper into his smaller conflict of not killing Tanya because her song moved him, it makes for good drama if Waul has to choose between saving one mouse because she offers something up in his world(seeing that they can be useful and people too) or eating them all due to base instincts. On another note if you want a Fieval movie that delves deeper into societal issues and treated natives with far more dignity then please watch and review An American Tale: The Treasure of Manhattan island. The animation is so cheap and crusty dusty musty but the story is incredibly engaging and honestly needs to be watched with what’s going on today. It also tries to retcon Fieval goes west so that’s always fun 😅

Had this film growing up, and enjoyed it a lot as a kid. Taking the rose-colored nostalgia goggles off, though, I agree about how disjointed it was, plot-wise. It feels as though there's little-to-no focus on the lead, despite the main character's name in the title. There were some good moments in the picture, and some bad ones, despite the great animation, voice talent and soundtrack. But all in all, the film is a genuine mixed bag. Though, I'll take this over the LBT sequels any day of the week.

So glad you covered Fievel Goes West! Amazing criticisms as always. Now for me, as a kid who lived in California and had a lot of American West history in school, this movie kinda resonated with me a lot even as an adult. I see the flaws in the plot and pacing sure, but I liked that the main focus didn't just center on Fievel but on the other characters too. Tanya's self confidence and realizing she doesn't need to be pretty to be talented, Wylie as the old washed up Sheriff finding the strength to run the cats out of town, Tiger overcoming his fears to protect his friends and Tiger's girlfriend going out to find herself only to genuinely miss what she had in Tiger. I think the characters work even if the pacing is chaotic. I do hate that the parents just vanish midway and you never see anything more about them. Also, I actually like that Fievel gets home relatively quickly instead of copying the first movie. The plot gets to pivot as Fievel has to convince his family that they are in danger and nobody believes him. He can't get through to anyone except Tiger and Wylie and suddenly you've got these polar opposites that have to be brought together to save everyone. I think that part of the movie actually holds up really well. Plus, what nobody ever talks about is that Tanya saved them. Her voice carried and she let all the mice know they were on a mousetrap so they could escape. I loved that part!

As a fan of animation even back as a kid when this first came out, I loved the HECK out of this movie. I had this one & not the original (surprising, I know; I rented the original many times though before finally owning it recently), but I lived for the animation, the story & the characters, not really seeing the problems it had. Nowadays, yeah... I can see the flaws - how silly scenarios are, how dumb the mice were, and just how low the actual stakes were altogether, even though the plot could've worked if better tweaked to be that "manifest destiny" story that is truly was attempting to be - but I still have a fondness for this sequel. I genuinely enjoyed Tanya's arc (and her singing? AMAZING) since Fievel's arc was a lesser version of the last movie, and the villain had a GREAT plan... and almost won too. John Cleese really stole the show as the evil cat, but we can all agree that Jimmy Stewart as Wylie Burp was a bittersweet send-off - especially at the end - for the actor & the film's message in general. Overall, I enjoy Fievel Goes West as a film. It's not a perfect sequel, but it is fun, an animated ride for the senses, and a story that really could've been as moving as its predecessor was if they leaned more into continuing Fievel's family's quest to have the American Dream rather than focus so much on well-animated slapstick comedy.

Maybe it's just the country boy in me, but personally, I love this film and "Mystery of The Night Monster"; and truly believe "An American Tale" and "The Treasure of Manhattan Island" are easy skips! The first film is too dark and depressing, and the third film is only important, to me, as it explains why the mice are back in New York for 3, 4. and it's a rage-inducing copout! Otherwise, it felt too curtrent-event-ish with the politics. As for the first one being too dark, I think Bluth's "Attention-to-detail black lies" in the art is a contributing factor. Personally, I don't care how many hairs Tiger's fur has! Or how rough the horses' hooves are! Or how warped the grain of the wood of the boat is! That's just giving the animators more work! Now, I'm not saying replace everything with solid rectangles and stick figures, but if you want to put more attention to the detail of something, focus on the writing! The art is one of the reasons I love the other two! Bright, simplified, and fun! Take the monster in 4 for example: when it was fully revealed, I wasn't thinking, "How could they have possibly made this thing as smooth and clean as it is?" No, I was feeling Fievel's fear! He saw that thing and instantly felt terrified due to all the stories and eyewitness accounts he'd heard. But then, with him remembering Nelly's speech, he was able to fight through his fear and I could feel his courage! As for the guns/slingshots debate, as we see later with Cat-R-Wall, the guns are all to-human-scale outside of that opening shot because the opening was in Fievel's imagination!

I must confess when I first saw this in theaters way back in 1991 I initially enjoyed Fievel Goes West more than Beauty and the Beast. Hell, I enjoyed it more than the original An American Tail at the time. However I was 9 and I think I often went for the more comedic, chaotic and over the top style at that age. While I could still enjoy it now it's long been obvious to me that Beauty and the Beast is a much more superb film. It's just funny what you enjoy more as a kid compared to when you're an adult.

Fun fact, I grew up on this film WITHOUT seeing the first film at all. I only saw it recently in my adult life. But yeah, that final scene with Wylie Burp is a genuine tearjerker and I always walk away from that scene thinking that it’s less Wylie Burp saying those words and more Jimmy Stewart himself reflecting on his legendary life as a Golden Age actor and the legacy he will be leaving behind as he prepares to eventually leave the mortal plane and entrust the future of acting to a new generation, hence him handing his badge to Fievel. It’s him passing the torch to future actors and wishing them the best.

@@Canibar13 No, I didn’t. Truth is, my family only had Fievel Goes West as part of our VHS collection. So no American Tail original and no subsequent sequels after afterwards. Just FGW though I was vaguely aware of the first one since I knew it had to be a sequel based on the title. Still I never felt like I was missing any context for it growing up. I still knew that Fievel and his parents were immigrants struggling with adjusting to American life, I still got that he and Tiger had a very important friendship. FGW always worked to me as a stand-alone film, strangely enough.

One on the Super Nintendo and one on the GameBoy Advance.

I like to look at the bad guy of FGW as the rich WASP-y indirect bigot to the lower-class direct bigots of the first film. He holds himself above the rabble and lets "poors" fight it out without getting his hands dirty, all the while being the one turning the wheel. Lillian Smith's "Killers of the Dream" has a parable of the Rich White and the Poor White that demonstrates this very well. How the Rich White gets to keep steering the car by convincing the Poor White that he would rather get to be in the passanger seat than risk teaming up with the Poor Black to take the wheal and lose the passenger seat if they fail. This was about segregation specifically, but you can in this case apply it to anti-Semitism. Cat R. Waul is the Rich White (or Christian in this case) Also he's that bigot who finds the one entertainer from the group they oppress and see no issue with continuing to oppress the greater community

As inane and drawn-out as many of Tiger's slapstick scenes are, I'll admit I still get some chuckles from them. That ending speech Wylie Burp/Jimmy Stewart gave was such a beautiful note to cap off the movie, as well as Stewart's career. Though it's kind of ironic for me that Stewart's final performance was also my first exposure to his work.

I think the humor in "Fievel Goes West" can be attributed to Phil Nibbelink. Because if you watch his self-produced animated films, like "Puss in Boots," or "Romeo and Juliet: Sealed with a Kiss," the same form of goofy humor and the same tone tends to pop up. Where as Simon Welles style of humor is a lot more subtle and, perhaps stylish.
