Ironically, the whole "they could have held on to 2D for 20 years" thing almost happened with the Saturn, which wasn't really designed for 3D at all. Most Japanese games developers kept writing 2D games for the system. SEGA of America refused to certify them, because they had just hired the bloke that got fired from Sony for refusing to certify Mega Man 8 and almost lost Resident Evil in the process. So you had a console with a massive library of 2D games that the console manufacturer refused to allow outside of Japan because "thats old tech lols"

You forgot Nintendo's biggest cock-up. The whole reason the PlayStation was even a thing was because Nintendo was actually looking into CD's for an add-on and then Nintendo switched to Phillips at the last minute (and thus CD-i). The irony is despite all the marketing (such as the goddamn name of the console) focusing on the power of the system, in practice the N64 wasn't much more powerful than the PS1. While it did have 64-bit processing, in practice this rarely mattered. The N64's architecture was so poorly optimized, that about half of its power went to just making the system run. When you combine the fact that the system lacked dedicated audio hardware and its video card was pathetic, it had even less memory to run the games. And even then, with the inability to show nearly as many colors or textures as the PS1 and the storage capacity of the cartridge being so tiny, the games always looked worse than PS1 games anyway.

I think yahtzee did an extra punctuation article at some point on why he thinks the ps2 era is probably the closest thing there is to a clear golden age in video games due to it being in just that right sweet spot on the ratio of technology to dev costs. Like the further back we go, the cheaper things generally get, but the worse the technology get, and vice versa for further ahead. The ps2/gamecube era being in *just* the right spot on this scale where you have the technology to realize most visions of gameplay, just so long as you don't go completely crazy with it, but the dev costs are still low enough that you could afford being creative. I really kind of agree with this. I cant quite imagine something like pikmin, katmari damacy or super monkey ball as being something that could possibly come out during the ps3 era or later unless they were highly experimental indie games you would get of off steam or something.

To be fair, the CDi was the fmv machine, 3D0 could have been something if the price point wasn't ridiculous and it had more than one game at launch. Or had another game come out in the next month, but anything before the saturn was really a late 4th gen console. Even the saturn was suppose to be a 2d machine, they had to stitch 2 processors together to make it '32' bit, similar to how the jaguar got its '64' if I remember right.
@benanderson896 жыл бұрын
The Jaguar _did_ have a 64-bit bus and graphics chip-set with a 64-bit word length in RAM. The British company that developed the hardware were making two consoles code-named Cheetah and Jaguar, Jaguar having the 64-bit graphics tech and Cheetah having the 32-bit tech. Sadly, because Atari were desperate and poorly managed, they cancelled the Cheetah and released the Jaguar before it was complete, so the hardware is buggy and missing features, thus games were hard to make and looked like shit.

The fact that the original PlayStation was notorious for shovelware always seems to be something that most people forget

One of the first games I ever saw on my Dad's original PlayStation was an M&Ms game. He also had Final Fantasy 4-9 to counter it I guess.

Didn't even mention the N64's controllers. At least a passing mention would have been appropriate.

He bashed the N64 controller in his Ocarina of Time 3D video, joking that it "seemed to have been designed for a hypothetical race of mutant spider-people".

I love that little jingle, Yahtzee. Back when you first played it, it would occasionally re-appear in my noggin for months like an Acid flashback. I hope it does the same for me now. :)

Well Sega is getting back into the console business, even if it is a retro emulator, so there's some new competition.
@Igorcastrochucre7 жыл бұрын
brainflash1 I wish they brought back the Sega Nomad, their games are on far too many platforms to worth buying another retro console.
@ManiacX19997 жыл бұрын
brainflash1 If Atari thinks they can bring back a new console that would play "new" games as much as old ones than who can say for sure? All I hope is that SEGA will call their new console the SEGA Superstar.
@SuspiciousScout7 жыл бұрын
That console wasn't made by Sega, it was made by a third party company that's known for making horrible "flashback" consoles.

It's a terrible emulator though.

Malfunction The genesis one they made was extremely poor. Frame rates were incredibly inconsistent and the sound quality was abysmal. I don't know how they get away with it.

I'm betting that, when PC gaming finally destroys Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo will still be off with a space helmet full of gummy bears doing just fine. It'll just be hanging out, making handhelds, doing its own thing. Not really competing with PC.

Yahtzee mentioned Sexy Brutale in his Yahtzee annoys his girlfriend: Dark Souls stream the other day. He said it was an interesting and fun game.
@fearedjames7 жыл бұрын
Ryan Welch I felt that Sexy Brutale didnt deserve the aclaim it got. Its a short, easy adventure game with extroardinarily good music. If Sexy Brutale lacked its music artist, it would be treated as a mediocre to poor adventure game that can be finished in 4 hours and has a slightly cool plot idea with crap execution and no ambition.

It might be two big ones again, as xboxone is getting behind... Switch might surpass it after Nintendo gets the actual consoles on the market. We live in strange times.

Sure Nintendo has more total sales as it works with handheld market also, but didn't PS3 and XBOX360 sell similar numbers? After WiiU this is good news for Nintendo.
@timetraveler55476 жыл бұрын
ViceCommando Yea. They both sold roughly about 84 million units, with the Wii selling 100 million plus.
