This is the second F-18 pilot I've heard tell the story of the completely fictional call signs in movies. Apparently if God himself became the most skilled and lethal aviator in history, his call sign would be would be something like "Snerf" because he sneezed and barfed at the same time once or something like that. Pretty hilarious to get those inside details when the opportunity arises.

@@andrewmaclean9810 Wanna know something crazy? I recently got an opportunity to speak with a family member who was up there in the air force. He told me the reason pilots loose vision when flying hard. Apparently the G force is so extreme that the blood vessels around the retinal nerve (the thing you see through) get so heavy that they "suffocate the nerve and temporarily blind you". Which is both the most badass and most terrifying thing I've ever heard.

Fun Fact:: Ice Man was named after a Navy flight surgeon with the Marine Corps - flew backseat in a F4 Phantoms - named Deniz Tek. While he was attending the Top Gun school so was the production company for the movie Top Gun, checking everything out; they liked his call sign. Anyway, before joining the Navy Deniz Tek was the lead singer of an Australian punk band named Radio Birdman. Their best song, and it’s actually really good, is called - Aloha Steve & Danno. Take a listen, it’s on KZbin.

I like that he was able to admit the reality of comparable technology and mutual espionage among competing air forces. As opposed to propaganda you often hear. With same generation fighters it'll come down to training.
@ruffxm
@ruffxm 3 жыл бұрын
Agree to a point, but while there are similarities and relatively comparable technologies, it is definitely not 1:1. There a absolute advantages to some aircraft that others do not have, and it is always evolving even when someone catches up. Think of it like the race between new cellphones every year or how new car models have advanced features until eventually other catch up. Then the race starts again. The US often leads this because of its financial and physical resources and the larger pool of talent they have to design these things.

I was enlisted as an F-18 mechanic and flight deck troubleshooter when this came out, and I can assure you the guys down in the shops were equally amused at the BS that runs rampant in the film. Good entertainment though, and it did inspire kids to join up. Also, regarding your call sign, I'm sure there's a funny story about it that you may not want to share. I was a kid in Pensacola, FL when _Top Gun_ came out. Pensacola is where all Naval aviators go to train. They had a recruiting table set up outside the theater to sign people up just as they left the theater. In that way, it really was a recruiting movie.

The negative is not attached to the four in that specific instance, you experience negative Gs but you do not experience -4 Gs. That would kill you instantly and, potentially, cause your head to explode.

It's ironic I watched this video this week. On Tuesday, I was watching on the Reelz channel the "Behind The Scenes" show. The episode was about the making of Top Gun. It was very interesting. 2 of the actual Top Gun instructors who flew as the MIG pilots and as the pilots for in the F-14s were interviewed. One is a retired Rear Admiral and the other is a retired Captain or a retired Admiral as well. One of the main things they talked about was how worried they were about how the Navy would think about the things were wrong/not done in reality. I can understand that. As much as they wanted to be realistic about the Top Gun school, dogfighting and the culture of naval aviators, it was also a Hollywood movie. The inverted scene with the F-14 and the MiG. They explained how that was done. It wasn't one complete scene, but several scenes spliced together to have the appearance that the F-14 was on top of the MiG, but in actuality, the F-14 was a little to the side of the MiG. Whiz is definitely right about how Top Gun the movie was the perfect advertisement for the Navy at that time. I was 13 when the movie came out ( I saw it on VHS). I wanted to be a naval aviator. Those dreams went down in flames when I got to visit the National Air and Space Museum and I changed to wanting to be an Air Force pilot *lol*. I can see how the Maverick call sign would make sense, because the character is a maverick. For the character, yea, it's totally logical.

@@tomast9034 thats a great video, that clears up a lot of confusion. Thx. Id have guessed jet fuel and diesel mainly differ in their additives needed to run jet engines vs diesel engines, but then there is the thing about water and gelling, so I can imagine why jet fuel needs to be much cleaner, much more carefully produced to higher standards, seeing that many old diesel engines will happily run on just about everything. I doubt a sophisticated jet engine would run on dirty diesel with 10% deepfry fat and 20% gasoline added, like some Unimog would do....
