@@garbanzo_bean What Muhammad Ali did inside and outside of the ring was an historical social phenomenon and master class entertainment. It will never be duplicated in a thousand years. Little Rocky may not be forgotten but he'll basically be ignored in another generation while Ali's legacy will live on for centuries! Muhammad Ali is the only boxer to be named The Ring magazine Fighter of the Year six times, and was involved in more Ring "Fight of the Year" bouts than any other fighter. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in its first year and held wins over seven other Hall of Fame inductees. Ali appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated on 38 different occasions, second only to Michael Jordan's 46. He also appeared on the cover of Time Magazine 5 times, the most of any athlete. Ali was crowned Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and was named Athlete of the Century by USA Today. Several of his fights were watched by an estimated 2 billion viewers between 1974 and 1980. In 2002, Ali was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Not necessarily, He was great yes but he didn't fight the competition that Ali fought from top to bottom. Look it up, a lot of the fights he fought on his way up were guys who had losing records and some you cant even find anything on. He retired at 32 and there were young fighters coming up that would have tested him like Floyd Patterson who was 28-1. Ali fought in an era with Sonny Liston, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers and these guys were all over 200lbs yes he was great but retiring undefeated just means he was smart to get out.

@@curtismcneil8695 Marciano fought tougher competition than Ali did. He went through all the top fighters and top contenders of his time that were either undefeated or had winning records with only a few losses. Harry Matthew's, Rex Layne, Roland Lastarza, and Bernie Reynolds were top notch fighters. Carmine Vingo was a 6'4" 237lb wrecking machine. Marciano nearly killed him. It was a death match and whoever won the fight would get the promotion to push for a shot at the title down the road. To call Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott old is an insult Marciano was old too. He started late when he was 25. Charles, Moore, and Walcott were still at the top of their game. Joe Louis was not an old man like everybody says he was. Yes Joe was a little older and was a little slower than he was back in the 40's, but Joe was still a powerful and good quality fighter. He was on an 8 fight win streak with 6 ko's going into the Marciano fight. Marciano would clean up the 60's and 70's era of fighters with a breeze. That was the most overhyped and overrated era of boxing that was a disgrace to the real fighters of 1955 and down. Even Ali admitted twice, that Rocky Marciano is the only fighter that he did not think he could beat.

@@jskypercussion Sorry but you are dead wrong, Ali fought way better competition and anybody with any Boxing knowledge will tell you same thing. Rocky was good in his day and Charles, Walcott and Moore were all good fighters. Take a look at when they turned pro and you'll see they were on the backside of there careers as compared to Rocky. LaStraza is the only young contender he faced after becoming Champion. He retired at 32 and Floyd Patterson was sitting out there at 28-1. So Rocky got out at the right time he was smart. Ali fought Frazier 3 times, Norton 3 times, Foreman, Holmes, Shavers, Lyle, He fought Patterson 2 times, Liston 2 times, Quarry 2 times, Oscar Bonavana, Cleveland Williams, Earnie Terrell, George Chuvallo I mean no Heavyweight fought that level of competition. It's not even close. Joe Frazier would have destroyed anybody Rocky fought as would have Foreman and Holmes. Look up Rocky's early fights and you'll see he fought several guys with losing records. Facts and dont give me this stuff about a 273lb guy he fought that was a beast, yes because he was knocking out guys that were 180 lbs. You think Joe Frazier and George Foreman weren't beast. Plus Ali fought all over the World. He did what a Champion is supposed to do and that's defend the title. Rocky's top 5 among all time greats and I have no problem with him being called the best but he didn't fight the competition that Ali did.

@@bobbyd1776 Light heavyweight Ezzard Charles only weighed 181 pounds when he won his 'vacant' Super Heavyweight title against cruiserweight Journeyman Jersey Joe Walcott in 1949. Exactly two years later Charles weighed a massive 182 pounds when he lost his Super Heavyweight title to you guessed it, 194 pound Journeyman Joe again. The fact that Walcott was granted 6 title attempts in a 6 year span speaks volumes about how weak the Heavyweight division was at this time. Five of these title opportunities came immediately after a Walcott Loss!!! So how the hell did Walcott get 6 attempts? Because the so-called 'Heavyweight' division was nonexistent, and he was the closest to being genuine Heavyweight. The 200+lb Heavyweights that did exist (Wilson Shkor Jackson) were horseshit. 230lb undercard B-level Bill Wilson lost 50% of all his fights. 220lb C-level Johnny Shkor lost 62% of all his fights. 254lb amateur Humphrey "The-Bum" Jackson had 4 wins 3 losses. Journeyman Joe was B-level undercard fighter at best. Overall he Lost (20) times and was KOd (6) times. Walcott's most notable victories include wins over Light heavyweight Ezzard Charles, Light heavyweight Joey Maxim and Light heavyweight Harold Johnson. Light heavyweight Charles Lost (25) times and was KOd (7) times. Light heavyweight Maxim Lost (29) times. Light heavyweight Johnson Lost (11) times and was KO'd (5) times. Light heavyweight Archie Moore Lost (23) times was and KOd (7) times. Would it have been ok if Marciano Lost (25) times and was KTFO (7) times? Of course not. If little Marciano had so much as a 'Draw', he wouldn't even be ranked top 20. Lennox Lewis constantly catches hell for being KO'd (2) times. Sonny Liston constantly catches hell for losing to Light heavyweight Marty Marshall. Yet it's always acceptable for Charles, Walcott and Moore to lose a combined (68) times. Why? Answer the question. Why?

The GOAT of any sport is determined by 2 factors 1) dominance of their era 2) level of competition of that era Rocky clearly had #1 Ali had #2 but did not dominate Joe Louis had both The same criteria holds with other sports For example both Jack and Tiger dominated their era but Jack's completion was extremely strong while Tigers was quite weak Same with tennis Rod Laver had both #1 & #2. BUT the recent Big 3 creates a case where nobody dominated but competition level was very strong. So Labor gets the edge #1 had # 1

Harry ''kid''Matthew, was one of the best heavyweights of that era. By the time he fought Rocky, he compiled a record of 77 wins - 3 defeats - 57 wins by knockout. Matthew was a skill fighter who didn't have power in his left hand but can seriously hurt his opponent's, if they keep their chins high up or he counter them off balance. He was respected in his class, prior to that time. Matthew's beatin' highly regard fighter's like Eddie Booker, Bernie Reynolds, Freddie Beshore, Lloyd Marshall, Jose Basora, Dave Whitlock, Art Henry & Rex Layne. Rocky had to get through, Matthew in order to get his title shot. This fight shows how dangerous Marciano was. For a round-plus, he looked awkward, somewhat clumsy, and Mathews was doing a good job with him. Then, like the commentator said, ONE mistake, and, like sudden lightning, Marciano accurately, and devastatingly, struck. During some of his fights, he at times, seemed to be having difficulty. Then...abruptly, no more difficulty. Never was this talent more graphic than in Rocky's next fight. For 12-plus rounds, Walcott, controlling the fight, seemed to be on his way to victory. Then, in a split second ONE Marciano punch---that classic short right to the chin---a concentration of nuclear-like power, and Walcott was unconscious, his FACE in the canvas. Under the picture of Marciano landing that right, a magazine cutline said, 'One punch made three scorecards meaningless." I don't know whether Marciano would have been able to catch Clay that way. But all it would have taken is a single mistake at the wrong time, and Big Mouth would have been out. Taking punches from Frazier and Foreman were one thing; taking Marciano bombs was completely different. Mathews said after their fight, "When Marciano hits you, you seem to see a slight flash of light." Harry should know.

Scott Reed, Joe Louis had a 12 inch arm reach advantage on Rocky and Rocky got all up inside on him and rocked his world (Dont try the age thing either because even an older Brown Bomber did and would've fucked up plenty of great fighters back then and today.) As far as the 'rope a dope' goes.... ask Jersey Joe how that worked out for him in the 13th round on a late September evening in 1952. Btw, I'm betting the Brockton Blockbuster's punch hurt more than a George Foreman punch. Ali was Knocked out by Joe Frasier (a great fighter almost exactly styled his fighting set after Marciano's style) yet Marciano could hit a hell of a lot harder and had a much stronger chin. If Ali could take Foreman's punches round after round but was Knocked out by a fighter who fights just like Rocky but all around weaker then how the hell are you going to claim Rocky Marciano wouldn't have beaten Ali??? He not only would've beaten Ali, he would've beaten Ali, Frazier and Foreman. We can talk 'opinions' all day but the fact is... Rocky Marciano had what it would've taken to beat all three. You can not say the same for them.... BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL BEATEN AT LEAST ONCE...... Period.

Light heavyweight Ezzard Charles only weighed 181 pounds when he won his 'vacant' Super Heavyweight title against cruiserweight Journeyman Jersey Joe Walcott in 1949. Why?

@@bobbyd1776 Consider that in the December 1962 Ring magazine poll of 40 boxing experts it was Jack Dempsey that was rated the # 1 Heavyweight of all time with Joe Louis 2nd, Jack Johnson 3rd and Marciano finishing a distant 7th, way behind Dempsey. If he was considered 7th in 1962 how does he propel to the top 5, when since then we have had Muhammad Ali who faced much tougher competition, the big power hitting George Foreman, Larry Holmes who made 20 title defenses, the bigger, faster and more powerful Mike Tyson, and the giant Lennox Lewis who at 6’ 5” 245 pounds would enjoy a 60 pound weight advantage over Marciano? This is a key point. Nat Fleischer rated Marciano at # 10, Charley Rose rated him at # 9, McCallum's survey of old-timers had him at # 9. No major historian who saw Maricano in their lifetime thought he was a top 7 all time heavyweight and 67 years have passed since Rocky retired. I understand the formula ranking bodies use. Problem is they never use WEIGHT as criteria. For example: THE RING GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHTS OF ALL TIME has '185' lb Marciano 4th and '165' lb Bob Fitzsimmons 20th (nonsense). THE RING acknowledges 18 different weight classes but they don't acknowledge WEIGHT to determine THE GREATEST HEAVYWEIGHTS OF ALL TIME. So middleweight Fitzsimmons should be ranked higher than giant Riddick Bowe?? And to make matters worse THE RING has '165' lb Fitzsimmons ranked No. 8 as the Most Powerful Puncher of all time -- Wiki. Anybody that takes these rankings with more than a grain of salt are not only casual but desperate. Rocky fanboys are the only ones that cling to these rankings, quotes, and stats as if it were life and death. You'll never see Foreman, Holmes, Lewis, Tyson or Klitschko brothers being defended with quotes and/or rankings. But with Rocky fans it's always Don Turner said this or Ali said that, or little Rocky was voted the greatest heavyweight fighter of the 20th century and the greatest puncher of all-time. Sportswriters get paid good money for their vivid imaginations.

@@bobbyd1776 A closer glance at Joe Louis 8 fight winning streak which helped him become #1 ranked contender before he faced Rocky. Below is the (6) (SIX) boxers Louis beat: 196 lb Cesar Brian -- Decision -- Brian never beat anyone noteworthy. He had abysmal 36% KO's 197 lb Cesar Brian -- Decision AGAIN -- Why Twice? 187 lb Omelio Agramonte -- Decision -- I watched entire fight and Joe's combinations were non-existent. Agramonte had low-power 45% KOs. The announcer said Louis was supposed to fight Charles after the Savold fight but Louis camp ducked him. 188 lb Omelio Agramonte -- Decision AGAIN -- Why Twice? 191 lb Freddie Beshore -- KO 28-10-1 Freddie had featherfisted 24% KO's 194 lb Andy Walker -- TKO 17-8-7 B-level Andy was powderpuffer with 18% KO's 179 lb Jimmy Bivens -- Decision - 5' 9" light heavyweight Jimmy had 25 losses and was KOd 5 times. He also had an abysmal 27% KO's 190 lb Lee Savold -- KO -- Savold lost 44 fights and was KOd 12 times. Even the announcer said Joe Louis reflexes are but a memory. These two should have been retired. They just pushed Louis through towards Marciano so everyone could fill their pockets with money. Talk about bum-of-the-month-club, WOW. Notice the 5 decisions. A prime 24 year old (1938) speedy combination puncher Joe Louis would have easily accumulated 8 knockouts against those powder-puffers. It was obviously a predetermined carefully hand-picked set-up. So Joe comes outta retirement and takes the worst beating of his career from a light heavyweight (Charles) then he fights 6 stiffs and becomes #1 ranked contender smh. Joe looked like he was wadding through mud when he fought Rocky. Boxing-elites Italian-mafioso and IRS really needed Joe to be ranked #1 inorder to get their Louis vs Marciano $$-SHOW-$$. The entire eastern seaboard was ruled by Italians. The only loyalty the Italian-mob-had was-to-money. Hey they even took 50% of Marciano's earnings and all ticket sales, all in all $2 Million. $2 Million in 1955 is equivalent to $21 Million today. Norris Carbo Weill had complete control over Rocky. That's why he Quit. The Louis camp negotiated a deal with the IRS under which he would come out of retirement, with all his net proceeds going to the IRS. After boxing Joe ended up in the pro wrestling circuit and they still took his money. But that gig finished when Cowboy Rocky Lee lunged onto him with both feet, his boots colliding with Louis' torso. The crash cracked three of his ribs. It left him with a cardiac contusion and officially ended his stint as a wrestler. Children used to send him one dollar in the mail. In his biography he said a child walked up and handed him a dime. When Joe was broken physically and mentally the IRS finally stopped collecting. He lived with friends until he died.

John, ROCKY walked around at 200-210 right after he retired and he filled his suit out like a powerlifter however ROCKY liked the lighter weight because he was obsessed with stamina. The feeling of never tiring within a 15 round fight and he wouldn’t have had it like that if he came in heavier. He woulda looked great muscled up but again the added weight even if muscle would have eroded his stamina to a significant degree…I know for a fact that he was obsessed with keeping his weight down. My father told me all the time that he (my father) thought ROCKY overtrained for a couple of his fights coming in too light but in ROCKY’S mind as a MAN that had no fear he feared tiring in a fight and he felt the only way to ensure that he didn’t was to come in under 190 lbs.

Mathews was doing a good job of circling left, which is what you should do against most right-handed fighters. An illustration on how different things were back then: in LESS THAN TWO MONTHS Rocky would defeat Jersey Joe for the title!

@shinshoryuken Rocky had one "big" meal a day -which included alot of steak and heavy potatoes, greens and milk. That doesn't mean he wasn't eating smaller portions throughout the day. .... great quality. Mattews didn't quite deserve this fight (Jack Hurley's machinations got him further than he deserved in the heavyweight/money division) but he had answers for Marciano's style ...for a few minutes. Marciano ain't pretty to watch, but he was an awfully tough man to defeat.

jab jab jack the ezzard Charles 2nd fight when he split his nose badly and the ref gave him one more round and he stopped Charles in the very next round, and he was Also up against it in the Walcott first fight , where he was outboxed, cut and well behind on points, then produced one of the greatest knockout punches EVER to win the title with a 13rd stoppage. What Marciano lacked in silky skills, style and finesse, he made up for in toughness , aggression and heart.

jab jab jack can i ask you a question? Why do you watch Rocky Marciano videos if you don't rate him?, most who watch these videos like his fights and are fans of his. I like his aggressive style and with limited ability and skills ,, he maximized his strengths and always gave 100% and that's what Rocky did. Hes definitely in my top 10 favorite fighters. But my top 5 is: 1.Sugar Ray Robinson 2.Harry Greb. 3. Henry Armstrong 4.Willie Pep 5. Marvin Hagler . who are you're Top 5.

jab jab jack I'm glad to hear you like Marvin Hagler, what a great fighter he was, and one of my ultimate favorites , and who can forget them unforgettable fights with Hearns, Duran and Mugabi. But I think the real sadness was the ending to his career with the so called "defeat" to Sugar Ray Leonard , I think it was a travesty of justice as Hagler was the aggressor the whole fight, and even when the fighters embraced after the fight sugar Ray remarked to Hagler "you beat me man'. Hagler hung around for a while for the hope of a rematch , but it never materialized so he retired. But the fight that crystalizes his greatness i think is the fight dubbed " the War" with the "Hitman" Tommy Hearns in 1985. And the unforgettable 1st Round was incredible, one of the greatest EVER. Hagler on full attack got cut on head as hearns ripped punches into him at will, but the formidable Hagler like a man possessed , relentlessly attacked on the front foot, and hearns had no answer and succumbed to a 3rd round stoppage. Hagler was on a different planet that night. A true Great of the Ring.

Nobody hooks off the jab anymore. Rocky double hooked off the jab. KO! The jab created the KO, not the hooks. The hooks just enforced it if you know what I mean.

Marciano fighting in the 60's and 70's would of been interesting... but he came along during a less notable era and whipped the best of the best who just happened to be smaller and weaker. I think the ultimate dream fight would of been Marciano vs. Foreman.

ok ok hold on for a second. Foreman didnt have stanima, speed, defense, or smarts so how the hell could he destroy rocky? rocky was down for a total of 8 seconds his whole career and it was from expertly timed left hooks from smart fighters while foreman was knocked out by ali (who wasnt known for power) and nearly killed by lyle (who got into boxing in his 30s with no amature career) so how does that equal him surviving seven rounds with rocky much less destroying him?
