It's been one week since the announcment and already the retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr. has had an impact on the sport of boxing. Oscar De La Hoya had planned on fighting two more times this year, but he's now decided to scrap his September 20th fight date, originally being held for the Mayweather rematch, to instead fight just one more time, on December 6th, before hanging up the gloves for good. Undefeated welterweight sensation Andre Berto, who was the #1 contender for Mayweather's WBC title, now finds himself in a position to become a world champion as his June 21st fight with Miguel Rodriguez will now be for the title that Mayweather was stripped of due to his retirement. Before Mayweather was in a position to have such an impact on the sport, he too found himself on the cusp of boxing stardom just three short years ago when he was set to headline his very first pay-per-view against then WBC jr. welterweight champion Arturo Gatti. Take a look back at some classic footage of Floyd Mayweather Jr., before the birth of the "Money May" persona, as he began to take his career to the next level before ultimately walking away at the peak of his prime.

I can watch floyd all day talking and fighting, his mind is unmatched as a fighter. "Floyd mayweather" is the best in the boxing game, I just find him inspirational in all aspects in life. This is the blueprint for sure he has paved the way for his talk and the way he carries himself. Undefeated legend! 🥊🤍

He called his own shot (6 rounds), and he did it in Gatti's backyard. One of my favorite victories of Floyd's bouts. I loved how he cried at the end, shows that he wanted that victory more than any of his others, IMO.

I'm not trying to be funny, but I've always wondered how the situation would've faired out if Gatti had beat Baldomir. Then Gatti would've had the undisputed WW title, then guess who'd come after that belt, it would've been Mayweather-Gatti 2 this time at welterweight, that would be some crazy stuff, I wonder how the build-up would be, I think would've taken easier on him the 2nd time around in the build-up then punish him again in the ring. Just an idea of events that could've happened!
