When I was in the Marine Corps in 1977, I was sent to the Army's Arctic Warfare Course, Ft. Greeley, Alaska. The landscape, forests, mountains, and glaciers were beautiful, but dear God was it COLD. When the weather turned bad, we were in the mountains with snowshoes, sleds for our equipment, and X-country skis. The wind would howl, the snow was blowing sideways, and it was bitter cold. I have a lot of respect for the people who live in Alaska. It seems to be a pretty hard life. Of course I was a Florida boy and maybe my blood was too thin.

We sat on the end of the runway in Kodiak for an hour with the engines running, waiting for visibility to improve so we could see down the runway, we were in a AIRSTA Kodiak HC-130 (1701) with two little girls (burn victims) who needed transport to Anchorage for better care than what was available in Kodiak. They had been in a kitchen fire in one of the villages in Kodiak and had already been transported via one of our station H-3's. I was the Loadmaster onboard and was assisting the nurse with the two little girls in the back who were so small both fit in the stokes litter, foot to foot. When the pilot gave the "We're rolling" over the ICS I told the nurse to hang on we are taking off her eyes started to glow with happiness. When we landed in Elmendorf AFB the pilot, CDR Rapalus, put it down so smooth you could hardly tell we were on the ground. We taxied in and offloaded them to a waiting ambulance. Flt Log 12-23-90. Merry Christmas it was.

The Almighty Power of Goodness was with you all over those few days. Many years ago, my wife and I were returning to England after a visit to Australia. On that day it was extremely hot in Brisbane and they were experiencing Forest fires. When our commercial air-liner was approaching Heathrow airport, there was a thick fog and snow and Ice. I assume our Pilots used electronic assistance to get our aircraft safely down. We found out later that at the time we were landing a London City helicopter was flying in that weather over London and sadly it flew into a builders' climbing crane and killed the crew onboard, so I appreciate the terror the Coast Guards must have experienced and I appreciate the dangerous work they do as much as the lady they rescued did. Well done gentlemen.

Agree. Several people have said the same, that it was rude and cruel to say such a thing....when it truly wasn't her fault at all! A heart attack is a heart attack. I know the climb wasn't this massive sharp rock repel and was in a _relatively_ controlled situation with properly experienced adults. Everyone is right. They ALL, but especially the kids should have had helmets and safety gear on. One. JUST IN CASE. As a SAR that's a dumb call. Two. It teaches the girls that this gear is important. She just rock climbed without this gear, why could she not do it again. Without her dad around sometime. A rrally dangerous version of "do as I say, not as I do" And. Three. 10000000000 of kids seeing a SAR member allow his young daughter to climb without this safety gear.... And expecting some young teen boys to do different.... After seeing this celebrated on a SEARCH AND RESCUE TV SHOW. not great.
@PneumaNoose4 жыл бұрын
Exactly!!! Good for you for stating all these perfect points. I’ve been arguing the same things. I said the little girl needed a helmet and the last comment I got was “obviously she didn’t.” Like I don’t understand how people can be so stupid. Just because you don’t get into a car accident 99.9% of the time you drive your children, does that mean you shouldn’t buckle them up?? You somehow know when an accident is going to happen so THEN you’ll protect them, right? Ughh! Like when I see adults being fucktards and they perish because of their own arrogance, I say good riddance because that’s less stupidity in the world. But when they put children at risk, that is absolutely unacceptable. Children are innocents and we MUST protect them. I’m a huge advocate for the innocent (children, animals, elderly and disabled). They don’t know any better so we must be the ones to take care of them. You are so right about everything and he really is setting a terrible example.

As much as I appreciate the skill, training and bravery it takes to fly in Alaska, I really didn't like the one pilot's comment at the end. *Rescue Swimmer:* "That was the sweetest old lady I've met in my entire life." *Pilot Lt Simon Greene:* "Well good, because she almost cost us all our lives". It wasn't her fault that she had a heart attack and the weather certainly wasn't her choice either. I realize he was wound tight as a drum from that flight, but one could hold their tongue from comments like that given the fact that she likely didn't want to fly in that weather, having had a heart attach and being strapped to a litter in the back of a chopper, any more than the rest of them did. He's the only CG member who comes across as being really pompous in any and all of the CG Alaska episodes.

Can you friggin imagine Zero visibility in a Black Hawk Hilo? It would like flying wearing a pair of scuba goggles painted black and you have almost like a dash console inside the mask that has a compass, altimeter, and other engine and rotor gauges. It's gotta have a pucker factor like no other. To put it into context what's learning how to fly a single-engine Cessnas before I went into the Marine Corps and I scored very high on my ASVAB with a GT score of 115 and had a year and a half of college but I still wanted to go infantry. While I was in Afghanistan killing up getting shot I was notified that I could flap move into the army and become a warrant officer and fly helicopters. So I took a little stroll over to the Helo deck where are all the Blackhawks and Apaches and Cobras were and talk to some of the Marine Corps officers and they were giving me a run through What It Takes and basically how to fly a helicopter and long story short I decided to stay getting shot at. If a Helo loses that tiny disk of air its hovering on then you and your crew are all fucked and that ground comes at you quicker than you realize and 9 times out of 10 you don't have the time or altitude to recover the aircraft. Plus while you're doing your amphibious warfare MEU workup you train on this thing called a Helo Dunker. Kind of self-explanatory really it's a mix shift helicopter that has lowered and turned upside down Olympic sized swimming pool and you have to carry your gear and your weapon in there along with 3240 other Marines wearing black out goggles and you have to go down be flipped upside down and then you have to rely on one guy to find the seal for the window and rip out the seal and push out the window then guide his Marines out of the window if he doesn't freak out and lose air first meanwhile you're holding your breath waiting on every other Marine in front of you trying to find their way out and swim out of the tiny window. Keep in mind in a real scenario the water is Pitch Black there is gear and weapons floating all around and banging you in the head there's Marine panicking and kicking you in the face trying to get that last seconds worth of air in that pocket they found somewhere. Then if you do make it out of the helicopter in the ocean you've got to worry staying afloat and staying together keep in mind you got all this gear on your camouflage uniform and Boots. Odds are there's a bunch of you banged up and bleeding so then there's day scared and worried of sharks which is about guaranteed after all the noise and panicking. These guys are absolutely amazing.

Guy just non-chalantly referred to the heavy rain and high knot winds to a hurricane, like it was nothing. Literally not much phases these guys anymore.

Where's the kids helmet when she's climbing the wall. For a coast guard that's not very safe.

He only spoke the truth. Emergency workers are humans too, and when they go to rescue, they often risk their own lives. That's not something to be taken for granted. Btw, he was semi-joking I believe, responding to the comment of how cute the lady was.

Could someone tell me why they taxi their helicopters instead of just taking off vertically?
@Ridearmy94 жыл бұрын
Most airports require helicopters to either takeoff in designated areas or the runway. It’s safer to take off or land on a runway instead of near buildings in case of engine issue that requires a quick landing or possible crash. Also the downward force the props make can damage buildings or near by aircraft.

This is why you don't do drink or drugs to excess while in charge of a vehicle! I don't think he did anything violent to his dad, but I think he feels guilty for his drunken behaviour that culminated in these events. ☹
