Cool, the hard bit with things like this is knowing what you have to do to take something apart without damaging the clips. Great useful video.

HAPP buttons are so much easier to clean! I just take the microswitch off, pull the buttons out, take the button apart, and then wash them in the sink. I also like to adjust the spring, make it more firm. Cool video, Luke!

16:29 Any idea how to pry off the base of these buttons. My button is stuck and its because the clip thing will not press-in in this square box. I tried opening it with small flathead screwdriver but absolutely no joy. Thanks for the great video!

Thanks Luke, the tips in this vid helped me easily fix a vintage 16-bit joystick I just bought, that suffered from clogged up button movement due to decades of dirt.

Just bought one of these from ebay and all of my buttons were getting stuck, badly. Instead of just sending it back (to Japan) I took it apart like this guide and checked them out. They were all clean. But here's the thing, when I put each button top back in, it made 5 of the 6 almost perfect. I think it's those little tabs. My other one only stick very slightly if you try to and is slightly is off-center because of one of the tabs.

As I watched this, I studied the buttons you were cleaning. I am planning on using my raspberry pi to make a mini arcade/ strictly emulation. Due to a lot of the more rare games I would love to play but can not due to being too much money. This of course will help me pick out the right buttons and create a desk frame to construct a arcade panel. ^_^ This is like arcade porn. *cues 70s music*

Hey luke, awesome video! I've been getting really into fight sticks lately and I was wondering if you could do a video about the actual joystick as well as far as cleaning or changing them would go. Some of my fight sticks have terrible sticks and it would to nice to figure out how to change them.

I sold my original launch day Dreamcast and that exact Arcade stick that I got for Christmas from my parents with Marvel vs Capcom. I highly regret it! Though this is great video. I want to mod a cheapie arcade stick and put in cute candy pink Sanwa buttons and 8-directional joystick :D

what hes using is probably white lithium grease based.. not WD 40. WD40 is only good for industrial shit.... bearings, and fine mechs is just asking for disaster if u used WD

American Cabs mostly used Concave buttons while Japanese caps used Convex. concave buttons most likely used big cherry microswitches which are harder to press (and click) while japanese buttons like sanwa use much softer microswitches that don't click.

Happ buttons come apart basically the same way, their just longer and the switches are attached to the bottom rather than inside like the Sanwa buttons. Still very helpful video.

This seems to be a huge problem with Neo Geo AES Original model sticks. Thing is, it is just a button that uses the top plastic half of the casing instead of a miniature button casing. The white switch part that goes in is exposed and the black inner part (cube) of the switch is snapped into a PCB. I never thought you could open the black cube switch without breaking it. Any suggestions before I do this repair with this exact button model?

Hey Luke I want to buy new sticks and buttons for my fightstick and mame machine. I want to have sanwa parts; however, I don't know which website to get it from. I'm kinda weary from sites like Amazon and Ebay because of potential fakes. I don't know if that applies to arcade parts or not but I would like to know where to get real sanwa parts from. For the buttons I would like to have Sanwa OBSF 30 buttons. For the stick I would want the jlf series. Thank You for your time and support.

I don't think that the Wii Hori stick is compatible without an adapter... The "WII CLASSIC CONTROLLER TO PC USB" adapter is necessary for the Wii Hori to work on PC right? I heard if you have a Bluetooth receiver installed on your PC and connect the Wii Hori Stick to a Wii Remote that will work too. I'm in the same boat as you; I want to purchase a quality arcade stick for the PC but I'm just too damn cheap to spend big bucks lol. The Mayflash Fighting Stick looks decent though at $36 shipped

Is there any specific reason why you recommend bicycle oil over white lithium grease (WLG) to lubricate the buttons? You usually recommend WLG for lubrication and I'm curious why you chose bicycle oil this time.

Get a Used in nice conditioned Wii Hori stick for like $46 after shipping from Amazon (Fair Game seller in CA). I checked recently and they should have them. Works perfect with USB on a PC. I am having a bitch of a time trying to find a PS3 Hori stick other than the Mini or an overpriced V3. I got my eye on a V3 to bid on for $40 + $20 shipping right now, but knowing my luck... it will go up to $60. Might just have to deal with paying a bit.
