Protect Toby Roberts at all costs. This sort of humble genuine energy is so refreshing to see in the elite level of sports, as well as just in the world. You're an incredible climber Toby!!

100%. I find that climbers all around (at least these pro level sport climbers) generally are *by FAAAAAR* the most humble elite athletes I’ve ever seen. They know how good they are but never fail to admit they are not infallible - tbh they mostly even embrace their „flaws“ and weak points & never shy away from acknowledging their strengths vs. weaknesses. There is just no other sport where the highest level of athletes are so real, so relatable & especially so far from being obnoxious, annoying or just outright arrogant. No pro athlete will ever not want to win, but I feel as if all of the climbing pros are a big family & almost love seeing each other succeed as much as themselves. Honestly climbing professionals are just the epitome of what *real & true* sportsmanship should look like everywhere…!

As another commenter said, the insights into your thinking and how you reset yourself and become so readily psyched to improve are incredibly valuable. It's rare for a top competitor, let alone an Olympic champion, to describe their thoughts processes and feelings so succinctly.

Amazing video as always. Do you think you'd ever do a Q&A? I have so many questions about competition climbing, your training, mindset, etc.
@JsonRUOK2 ай бұрын
In case you do decide to do a Q&A: - What do you think are your biggest strengths and weaknesses when it comes to climbing? - Do you get nervous climbing in front of a big audience? - What's been the worst climbing injury you have sustained to date? - What's it like having your dad as a coach? - What's your ape index? - What do you think makes Japanese climbers so strong? - What are your career goals going forward? Thanks!

Interested to know if your Olympic champion status is affecting you in those comps: more pressure, different pressure, great confidence booster, all the above?
@TobyClimbing2 ай бұрын
I don’t feel so different, I thought I would feel way more pressure but right now I’m just really enjoying the competitions as they feel like they have way less pressure compared to the Olympics.

@@TobyClimbing That's great to hear. I may be totally wrong, but it felt like winning Tokyo for Gines-Lopez had a detrimental effect on his comps afterwards, despite his good run going into Paris 24. Anyway, keep it up, fresh start next season and hope you can carry that positive handling of pressure. Pressure is in the tyres, as they say.

I was wondering about your comment about how chewed up people get on rough holds like the first hand-jamb climb. My brother got a fairly serious knee infection from a slight scrape on a rough hold and was on antibiotics every four hours for a couple of days. What do you and other climbers do to try to avoid skin infections?

Went to bouldering for the first time recently. Got hooked. But Im not strong enough. Did multiple second easiest level routes but after 2h got tired. I go to gym almost every day, but to walls the plan is once a month. How long do you think it will take in this pace to become strong enough to do at least half the routes in gym? I can give some 20mins in gym specifically for something that helps on walls
