Glad you mentioned the liver location. We were practicing ending a combo with liver shot. I am a registered Nurse. I was hitting where...yanno....the liver is. One of the coaches was wanting me to basically hit the floating ribs.....which is still a good shot.....but yeah, liver is right where you showed lol

He obviously sat down and tried to take a scientific approach to explaining boxing. So much so, even Bruce Lee recognized the quality, outright claiming it as partial inspiration for the writings that became Tao of Jeet Kune Do.

The reason you aim where you do on the torso for a liver shot is because that’s where it pokes out from under your rib cage, the rest is protected by bone. With gloves sure go for it,maybe it’ll work, but without gloves go for the softer target

The rib cage is also weaker towards the bottom on the sides too and the muscles form in such a way that they don't offer as much protection there. It's much harder to get the compression you need to damage the liver from the front. It's like the human achilles heel!

If you look at x-ray images of abdominal cavities, you'll see that there's very little of the liver that actually pokes out of the ribcage, and sometimes it doesn't at all. Instead, you want to hit the floating ribs that protect the liver. Those floating ribs are flexible and a punch will slam those ribs right into the liver and stun your opponent.

My boxing master taught me something similar, because he also said to throw an uppercut rather than a hook, but to try and land it behind the elbow so it would go clean into the liver.

Yeah I think a normal hook to the body (with the lead hand) leaves you open to counters and feels weird on the shoulder. I've always liked the diagonal hook uppercuts, set them up like any lead hook or uppercut, and they won't expect the body shots. Punching at an angle really targets those floating ribs, and could score you a knockout with not much power if you catch the opponent a little off guard, it's pretty hard to read, and it's a good counter to someone flaring their elbows, or leaving their punches out hanging instead of being snappy. Naturally, body shots, punch or kick, should align with their arm to get past their elbow. Hooks are simply not well suited to body shots in my opinion. They still can work, though. Maybe it would have use on a counter, but if you're doing head movement all the way down like that, I feel like you'd get more power with an angle uppercut type thing. You see lots of pro boxers do it. I haven't seen many flat body hooks score a knockout. Though, maybe I'm just ignorant.

Technically the liver is protected by the rib cage and the abs in the center, which is why it’s unlikely to do damage to the liver by hitting in the center. Reason everyone hits to the side is because the liver sticks out of the rip cage there and it’s completely unprotected
