Probably too late now, but the tier list(s) would make a lot more sense if it was split into early, mid and late game. Like I’m sure many early game mons are S tier until you reach late game, and vice versa. It would tell you which mons are worth sacking, and which are worth leveling and keeping around for certain moves despite a lack of viability early game, etc.

Being able to get the Rock Tomb TM before Bugsy makes a fair few Pokemon viable to beat him. Sandshrew and Krabby especially can do quite well with it. Also some Falkner tips: if you hold onto the Escape Rope and walk out of Sprout Tower, you can go to a Ruins of Alph puzzle and get a free Oran Berry. Plus defense lowering moves are quite good at playing around Roost on Pidgeotto. As an added side note, you can get Hard Stone before Falkner by playing on Thursday.

Realistically w headbutt u only need to test a few mons. Spinarak/Hoothoot/Spearow/Ledyba are all encounters anyway. The only headbutt-exclusives are eggy, aipom, pineco, and heracross. Just test those four

Chikorita is very underrated as an encounter. Once you get to goldenrod you can get swords dance and it becomes a great bulky sweeper into Whitney and Clair. It's not great into the first two gyms but with proper routing they should almost never be an issue anyways.

Whitney, Claire, and maybe team rocket take over boss depending on your levels are all that’s hard before E4. Whitney’s miltank at level 19 is fast enough to stomp flinch down lots of your encounters and makes a lot of mons shakey for reliability

Falkner was only not a problem because of your good encounters, poison powder, and unlimited rare candies. Try him with no super effective moves, no grinding in the grass/rare candies and a different starter which is more likely to be the case.

technically with that ghastly with minimal minimal day effort you guarantee beat bugsy. Route above initial rat, bird, or geodude. Rat guarantees gastly. Rat + Bird = guarantee sprout = Onix. And then dark cave and the union cave strong shot at geodude. Basically means over 99% of the time you just win no? And thats all under the assumption you dont go cindiquil. Basically i dont think this fight needs to be weighed that hard.

I think you have a Geodude encounter on the bit of route 46 you can access, which trivialises both gyms AFAIK

When it comes with headbutt encounters (and fishing because yes), I say that it's separate from the route. Does this mean I get a ridiculous amount of Pokemon in early game? Kind of? I mean there's only really...what 7 Pokemon from headbutt encounters in the whole of Johto if I recall yeah? But then Spearow, Hoothoot, and Spinarak all can be found in the grass anyway of other routes, so you really only need headbutts to grab Aipom, Heracross, Pineco and Exeggcute. But anyway the way I call it is this: On any route that features a tree or fishable area, and just regular encounters, I am allowed to grab the regular grass/surfing encounter, and then I choose between fishing or headbutting for the route. It's *slightly* complicated to keep track of what I got from a headbutt tree and what I got on route, but not that bad.

the thing about whitney is she can be really difficult if you don't do in game trades and you never get the encounters you need for her, like she's the first real box check of hgss. but even then it's possible to beat her especially if you have luck and cheese on your side. like on cart, a way i actually beat her once was with somebody using up miltank's lum berry then my togepi used metronome which somehow got poison fang that then bad poisoned her so i just heal spammed until death. as for the headbutt and night/day encounters, my suggestion is to do a run where you pkhex in all of the important ones as well as the guys from hgss safari zone which are a bitch to collect all of them.

@potatoman2580 Calling the remakes Gen 2 is silly. They have the physical/special split, pokemon from Gen 3 and 4 and a myriad of other changes. Roaming legendaries, day and night cycles, your pokemon following you, the pokeathlon, headbutt tress, countless areas, all of these changes make it better and more immersive. It just does not make for nuzlocking. PChal blindfolded himself every time he went into a new Sword/Shield matter because you could see the pokemon now and he tried to generate blind encounters. Does not mean the games were worse, just because they were less convenient to hardocre nuzlocke. HG/SS are objectively the peak of pokemon, nothing comes close.

Fun fact if you don't count static overworld Pokemon as encounters (more of a casual nuzlocke rule), then Pryce is the easiest fight in the game. You can get 3 Electrode from Rocket Hideout and click Explosion 3 times
