I have thought about buying the Tobii Eye Tracker 5. it's nice that you can move your head in to see your gages better so I don't have to use my mouse.

The main reason some sort of face tracking is needed is actually for traffic patterns. Trying to use the hsi for traffic patterns without having any sort of reference point is extremely difficult. I look at my hsi and nav to see if I'm 45 degrees from the numbers on the runway but I always verify by looking out the back of the airplane before turning onto final. Also you need to look out the side and down to be able to make your midfield call to atc (if you're doing vatsim or using this to get better at pattern work). Overall this or trackir are necessary to get good at using reference points in traffic patterns. I would highly recommend using something like this if you're serious about flying.

Amen to that! That is where I get the most frustrated trying to toggle screen around to see where I am at in the traffic pattern. This is really the only reason I want one is for flying traffic patterns. Which do use?

I am looking for a head/eye tracker to complement my VR as using VR all the time for long flights is not brilliant . There is some interesting technology emerging in this area.

I've had one for a few weeks now and decided not to use it after trying it for a few flights. Now that I've watched your video I've decided to try it again since you've covered the sensitivity settings so well. I'm going to reduce the sensitivity on eye tracking as I find the default to be too aggressive. I also appreciate the keyboard assignments you've suggested. Your video will breathe new life to my experience. Although hands down VR is much better and much more immersive, having this eye tracker is very valuable because it allows me to see the keyboard and the buttons on my Honeywell Throttle Quadrant, etc. Only Con I have against the eye tracker is that I have to set both my monitor and my chair at a higher height in order for the Tobii tracker to see me over the Honeywell Yoke. I think Tobii should develop an update to allow one to set it atop the monitor as an option. That's my only gripe at this time.

Ah I hope you get on better with it after a few tweaks. Personally, when I first got my TrackIR, I hated it. I spent ages changing settings and trying different profiles and really, I just needed to spend time getting used to it. So I'd say don't give up even if you can't get it working exactly as you expect it to be, just spend some time with it. I agree it would be better if it would work on top of a monitor rather than underneath.

@@FilbertFlies Update...I followed your suggested settings and made a few adjustments. Mainly I took out the eye tracking and this made a huge difference in the useability of this tool. It works like a charm now. What made the biggest difference was knowing that F9 would disable this. I don't need this tracker to be on all of the time so it's nice to simply disable it. What a relief. As you may know, the Honeywell has many useful buttons and developing that muscle memory is key before one dons VR headsets. That's where I feel this tracker comes in handy. So, once again, thank you for this video.

​@@GaetanBelisle I use it a lot more than VR after I got it adjusted to my liking. I highly recommend it and have really no complaints. I don't use the eye tracking function though but I'm very happy with it.

Very interesting! I'm currently using Track IR, but the fact that Tobii only needs a camera and no reflectors beats that! And I don't need an additional program in the background ? Did I understand you right that it works perfectly with glasses once it is calibrated without glasses once ?

There is a program that runs in the background but yes, no reflectors and it's fine with glasses.

i love mine... only wish i could set perimeters in MSFS like i can in DCS. i like to fine tune it. i know its semi automatic within sensitivity settings in MSFS but it could be better with some tweaks.

What about pausing the camera? For instance I lean in on a display or CDU, I don't want to keep leaning to maintain view because I can get tired and as a result, shaky. In TrackIR you can look in a direction or lean in a direction and then freeze that view. Here, if you toggle off head tracking, it recenters the view.

I don't know why but mine doesn't work in MSFS 2020 at all. It works in other games but it does nothing in MSFS 2020. Anyone found a fix for this?

Yes. You can set this up and adjust its sensitivity. I find it a bit weird so I have it turned down quite low.

What happens if you keep your eyes on a cockpit gauge in the middle of your screen and turn your head slightly left or right. Does the gauge stay in the middle of the screen? That is the behavior in real life. I was wondering if that is the case with Tobii.

The Tobii has a slider (as you saw in the video) that adjusts the head vs eye tracking ratio. I imagine if you set it fully to eye tracking, it would do exactly this. But the experience without any head tracking would feel really clunky and weird.

@@FilbertFlies Yeah, turning off head tracking is not what I meant. I'm referring to eyes on an instrument, but if the head moves slightly left or right, the instrument should remain where it is. If you then move your eyes to another gauge, Tobii should move to it in relation to your now current head position. I'm probably not explaining it correctly, but I'll find out soon enough. I placed an order for it!

HAve bought an eye tracker. It works pretty good except with the Just Flight Hawk T Mk1, the view position keeps setting up so that the ejection seat harness obstructs the view. Its as if the pilot has the straps partly over his eyes. Have tried changing the settings in the set up but makes little difference. Any ideas how to fix/resolve the issue?

Set a key to reset eye tracking (I think that's what it's called, can't remember for sure but I discuss it in the video) and press that once you're in position. It'll be in the exact same position in any default or custom view as if you didn't have an eye tracker.

@@FilbertFlies Yes, I saw that, however at the moment I;ve not achieved an unobstructed view from the harness strap's. So having a reset option wouldn't make much difference at the moment. I'll keep playing around with the settings. Essentially I need to move forward to be positioned in front of the harness straps

I noticed that yours was secured to the bottom of your screen but on the front bezel as oppose to underneath the monitor like you see in most reviews, how did you do that? Also with the tracker being that low down, did you get any obstruction from having a yoke/joystick in front? I would worry that my yoke would block the view of my head from the tracker

I have my joystick out to the side and I don't own a yoke, but yes, that would definitely be an issue if you had one in between yourself and your monitor. I guess it could be got round by elevating the monitor somehow, but not ideal.

thamk you for the informative video but price tag is out of my range, besides that I am still concerned about calibration and preformances for those (like me) wearing glasses (if I only was 15 years younger. ....)

It's absolutely fine with glasses. I had to mention the issue I had on first calibration because it would have been less than honest not to, but I've been using it exclusively with glasses on and have had no issues at all since. I know what you mean about the price though - it's a significant investment.
