Fun fact, the reason the fight was filmed as though they were all tired and fatigues is Choi Min-sik was on 48hrs of no sleep, and Director Park was mandating a new take constantly because it was missing something. It was only on this 17th take when Dae-Su was almost falling over during the fight that Director Park said he found what was missing.

6:43 I think it’s worth considering that Oh Dae-su does not intend to use lethal force. He has no issue brutalizing people but he always leaves them alive, and I think that’s maybe why he drops the knife; he’s afraid of going too far. At some point I would be interested to see your take on knife combat where someone was trying to incapacitate but not kill!

@@StuffyMc Right, the film establishes very firmly that he has a punch like a sledgehammer from just punching a masonry wall all day for years. So that explains how he can punch people out so easily. The thing that reveals the artifice of this scene the most is actually the fragility of the sticks these guys are using. A heavy piece of wooden doweling like that would more likely break Oh Dae-su's forearm than snap over it.

And Chad is 100% right about liver shots! Brutally painful and debilitating in the moment. Plenty of high caliber pro fighters can attest to that.

Remember that in the movie he basically only shadowboxed in a room for years to learn how to fight and this was his very first real test of that. The errors were proof that he was still not practiced in real world applications yet. Good thing he seems to adjust and learn quickly.

I'm not a fighter or fight tactician by any means but I think the reason he initially goes through everyone and breaks the funnel is because there's a wall behind him so it would be easy for them to just corner him to the wall and break him down. Once he goes through them to create the second funnel, Oh Dae-Su has a lot more space to work with and can ultimately escape or at least distance himself correctly.

I believe both that, and that by getting to the other side retreat was a much more viable option. The elevator is right there, and only so many would fit.

One thing with the double weapons thing, I don't think most people are co-ordinated and familiar with complete replacement of their hands. And even though you can "grab"/claw with a second weapon, its natural to want to have a free hand to block/parry/push etc. I think because Oh Dae Su taught himself boxing mostly, he reverted to the power hand technique, and simply opted to modify it from a punch to a hammer. Really love how you go beyond just techniques in this breakdown and others. Points out the difference between sport and "real" fights, and also just the fight mentality in general.

Great breakdown, guys! I've always felt this scene had a big impact on the fight choreography in Daredevil. It had its flaws, sure, and I thought it was unrealistic to have a single guy fend off tens of assailants like that. But it was a wild ride nonetheless. Also, you guys should breakdown the machete fight from the raid redemption. So much muay thai in there, and fending off multiple assailants with weapons in there.

Bas Rutten used to have this attack where pretends to mistime a punch and as his opponent is focused on that, he comes up with a kick to liver that just sends them to the ground. Also, in the book 'Legionnaire', Simon... whoever, talks about being taken to the ground and surviving. Looks like Logan's done some TaiJi Chuan.

@@logan607 Interested to know - did you do HEMA as well or is your sword-fight analysis from the parang or the kamiplan or something? I'm not too familiar with Kali, having done less than five minutes of it (still, I think it's 5 mins more than anyone else than anyone else in the country I live in). The guy who taught me (if he was genuine) showed me an empty handed technique that looked... almost like a slow capoeira ginga, is the best way to describe it. Wouldn't know what that technique would be called of course. I did a flyer for him so he gave me a free lesson.

I practice Chinese traditional Martial Arts, and I agree that distancing is really hard to understand without 2 person drills/sparring. My Sifu had us do a lot of 2 person exercises, and you learn very quickly that practicing your forms is only part of the training. Even if you're only doing 'health and wellness' Taiji, the healing part relies on the energy being channeled properly - which you learn from 2 person work. Love your channel! Keep up the good work! :)

I thought that it was smart that sometimes, Oh Dae-su actually put one of the knocked out guys in front of the group to slow them down a bit. Also, it narrows the funnel temporarily.

Always love some oldboy representation. My favorite korean film. Another thing I'd like to add, (nothing to do with commentary just pure film nerdiness) the cinematography of the scene if you look closely is shot in a way which shows the mc's struggle. Its like initially when he is winning, the camera moves to the right, but when he starts losing, the camera starts to move to the left. When he gets into a deadlock, the camera just stops moving and goes still. And then he gets out of the deadlock, the perspective changes now when he hits, the camera moves to the left and when he goes defensive/goes backfoot the camera moves right. Thematically this is such masterful storytelling as it shows our character faces a dilemma, goes to fight it head on, makes some mistakes, gets punished for them (literal stab) and then comes out of it a totally changed man. Beauty in violence.

First Kill Bill and now Oldboy? This is amazing, 올드보이 (OldBoy) is in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. I think the reason why the fight unfolds this way is because Oh Dae-Su and his opponents don't go with the intention of killing the first one, just dealing a lot of damage, but without killing the opponent. That's why Oh Dae-Su drops the knife and that's why his opponents stop kicking him (and they aren't using melee weapons) and let him stand up after they plunge a knife into his back. Woo-jin doesn't want Oh Dae-Su to die and that's why he must have given explicit instructions to the thugs not to kill Oh Dae-Su, that explains why they fight in that way that seems unreal. On the other hand, Oh Dae-Su is looking for his revenge against the one who kept him captive all those years but he is not interested in killing anyone who is not his captor, that is why he does not use the knife in the first instance as a secondary weapon. Due to the context in which the fight takes place, I would give it a higher score, since it is not a conventional fight, but something with specific pre-established rules.

To me personally what gets unrealistic in overall fights scenes is the fact there a bunch of people with big long sticks in a closed small corridor, even if they swings their weapons it would hit the ceiling or the walls, that might be the reason that they don't use it in slash or contusive ways but just piercing strikes on the mc.

Compared to the raid, raid feel more refined but oldboy capture the natural fight slow punch etc, its not that realistic with the stick and oh dae soo durability but its great works

I honestly feel it's not responsible if we don't stress avoidance. Physical violence is the complete breakdown of communication and common sense. It happens, of course, but you should do everything you can to avoid it, especially if weapons are involved.

Could you guys cover Leon’s knife fight with Jack Krauser in Resident Evil 4 Remake vs RE4 (2005)? Like to here your thoughts on both types of fights. Also want to know what you think of their deployment method and the types of knives being used. Think it would be a great episode to really get into the mechanics of using a knife against another knife, as well as alternate deployment methods that might be used by a professional. Plus you could also breakdown the kicks used by Leon, that way it’s not too one-sided of an episode.

​@@ScenicFights Indeed, I always like the highlights and breakdowns mixed with more practical takes on the scenario. Honestly everyone makes mistakes in the fight and that's partly why I like it so much. Dae-Su pays for quite a few of his mistakes, though I do agree with the contention that being taken down to the ground probably would've ended the fight earlier. My only real defense would be that this group of henchmen were clearly quantity over quality. They are probably just hired muscle there to save the Warden. A bunch of young men with bad tempers and no where to go. Kind of like the group Dae-su encounters earlier in the movie, when he puts his shadowboxing skills to the test for the first time (and dons those stylish woman's sunglasses). They wildly swing and miss, second guess their strikes, expend energy crazy fast, and get frustrated easily by anyone that doesn't just backdown as expected. Similar to the hordes of street thugs you encounter in the Yakuza games. Scary in a pack to the average person, but when faced with even someone like Dae-su who has a barebones amount of training but a tremendous amount of passion, their cracks start to show. Speaking of Yakuza... Any more chance of breakdowns on those games, their cinematic fights, fighting styles, and more heat actions maybe? The games are pretty over the top, so I'm sure not everything would be practical, but still fun perhaps. Always love seeing new uploads from you guys. Thank you for the videos!

Absolutely loved old boy including the mind fuque ending in the storyline My friends and I also evaluated that fight scene and loved the fact they included the exhaustion in their fights We had a theory of why the enemy wasn’t using the 2x4s more often was to minimise collateral damage and whacking your mate next to you Also I work as a nurse on a surgical ward I once looked after a guy who had a grade 1 liver laceration secondary to a liver punch, it ended his mma career

Question: Would dual-wielding still be effective even if you are not trained? I would imagine an untrained individual might get confused trying to use both weapons the same way trying to use your non-dominant hand in writing would be awkward.

I think so. Essentially, in situations like this, you're fighting for your life. You need every advantage you can get. Agreed, though, that there's a good chance you'll cut yourself, but the upside is worth that risk, I think.

As much as I love this scene, the excellent commentary really underscores for me that, as someone with a mobility impairment, there's just so much more to think about when it comes to how to handle yourself in a fight. I can think of only a very limited number of scenarios in which I might, possibly, be able to even survive a fight. And they mostly rely on the funnel concept (even with one person) because all the quick movements Chad was emphasizing just wouldn't be something I could physically do. My point not being that the situation sucks, but rather that you guys always give me new things to think about, and I appreciate that.

Lovely breakdown as always. Just would like to raise the possibility that they didn't use their weapons when they got him on the ground because so many of them are already crowding around him that they can no longer swing with enough windup to deal meaningful damage with those thin, brittle sticks. Thicker, heavier beams would've been more suitable for that. Also, the guys on the outer ring would barely have connected with him at all using those sticks.

Back when I was trained in martial arts, my instructor had me do something to learn distance when I was practicing alone. He had me set-up an egg on a toilets paper role. The goal is to throw the punch, touch the egg, but do not break the egg. Cleaning up egg off the floor will make it annoying so it helped me not destroy the egg, ha. This was decades ago so it is hard to know how effective this training was.

1, he obviously wasn't trying to kill, he had them take away a guy that was about to die right before the fight started 2, they couldn't hit him with the sticks while he was on the ground because they didn't have enough room without also hitting eachother 3, their eagerness to kick him is what helped him get up the first time because they crowded eachother so the hits didn't have much power and when he grabbed one of their legs and he fell off balance he pushed everyone back
