Our t800s cranked like that all the time. When starters started going out we put gear reduction starters in them and it helps so much. Very rarely have to jump them anymore to get them spinning

Gear reduction starters take less power to get them to start turning but they use same amps and voltage afterwards as old style starter do. Have to be careful how many amps to feed gear reduction starters can't put four 1000amp batteries to them. Most trucks today have only 3 batteries in them now. Seen few with only 2 batteries that where from southern states. Peterbilt postal trucks in my area have 2 batteries. Junk battery cables to starter can make them crank slow at first too. Use to be ran 2 pos and 2 neg cables to starter but only they use bigger cables so it 1 of each going to starter now

Hey Zach semi fleet owner here. We had the same issue with one of our the trucks. We put a multi meter on the truck during starting and found the starter, while it worked always, was dragging an insane amount of power. Put new starter on. Never had an issue since.

The Delco Remy 39MT’s would work great for this fix. Those older 42mt’s that used to come on the old Cats and Cummins were monsters, not only in power draw, but physical weight.

I'm not a farmer anymore...but I am a homesteader with a bunch of equipment. I got tired of dead batteries, so, everything that doesn't move a lot gets parked near an electrical outlet and I hook a NOCO battery tender to it. For example, the following equipment has a tender on it: Skid steer, three wheeler, four wheeler, mower, F-250 and spare work van. What doesn't have tenders is stuff that moves at least twice a week. This has ended my battery misery, and batteries are lasting around 5 years now. Good luck to all, thanks for the great content Zach!

The safety on the hydraulic rams that you were referring to our called velocity fuses. We have them on forklifts also as a saftey so if a line fails the load will not come crashing down fast

Zach we have found generally if the truck is not real cold and has new batteries fully charged then usually the starter and starter solenoid need repair

Battery tip: To prevent battery discharge while stored or parked, clean the surface of dust and debris, thus preventing parasitic draw. Cover the battery to prevent rain /moisture and dust from gathering on the battery surface. Battery terminals and cables should be wire brushed for good electrical contact. ...........A battery disconnect switch will also eliminate battery drain.

16:20 carpet also helps with noise dampening and vibration dampening. Also has some insulation property's for heat. All around it helps, isolates noise, vibration, and heat. Just gets dirty and its a pain to clean but since yours is removable just take the whole thing out and beat it on the ground.

Zach, Not sure if you have done this or maybe it has been mentioned. Regarding your battery issues, it is VERY important to clean all the connections and grounds on your semis and tractors. You will want them to shine in order to work the best. Clean them with soap and water and a wire brush. This include the battery cables, wires on the firewall and the ground wires to the frame. If you don’t see any improvement, there could be corrosion inside your battery wires. Lastly, 3 batteries on a semi is pretty rare these days. Most have 4 especially for you in the cold temps of MN. My Dad and used to own a fleet of semis hauling throughout the Midwest and South. Clean grounds and connections is a common issue for us in the Northern climates. Hope this helps!

Hey Zach, check the short battery cables, the ones that go between the batteries, they have a tendency to get corroded and you won't even see it. So it is a cheap easy fix.

The nails in the ice and dirt of the barn floor makes me want to invest in some serious neodymium magnets and stick them to a rototiller shield. And work my way thru the top 4 inches in the barn floor. Investing in a metal detector and a floor marking spray can and handle. So you metal detect and mark the floor before coming back and digging them out.

Or drill a hole in skidsteer forks so you don't even need to mess with getting the hitch attachment. I made a ball with a longer threaded end and drilled a hole to pin it in fork to move ball hitches around.

In reality it does two thing: 1, significantly weakens the tip of the tine 2, gives you a really wobbly poorly placed hitch point that's a pain to use. AKA that hitch attachment is a way better and safer option, especially when it's so quick to change on the skid steer.

Since you are having so many dead batteries have you considered adding master switches? They are put in ihe neutral cable which interups the electrical power when in the off position. Simple to use off equals no power on equals power on.

Pro tip, take a polisher or buffer and put it against the carpet. It will agitate the dirt and you can easily vacuum it up.

I worked in a starter shop for many years. A really common problem with trucks is the batteries ground to the frame, then frame to starter. The connections corrode/rust and the trucks won’t hardly turn over. If your trucks are set up this way, usually a 2/0 ground cable from batteries to the starter will help with slow starting issues.

14:50 check your grounds. I had hard slow starts on my sisters car and even with a charged battery and a jump box it just didn't wanna go. Its chassis to engine block ground strap corroded away. Higher resistance requires more amps and that means hard starts or no start. plus cold battery's have less volts and oil is thicker so the starter demands more from the battery's and everything is working against it.

I know all about the JD shuffle use to be the yard guy at a Deere dealership and use to move the yard around depending on what came and went. We had a big battery on a cart to jump start equipment. And when not in use it was hooked to a charger then one could boost a unit without having to get a vehicale close or find jumper cables as the ones on the battery was bolted on.

On the trucks, you could get a voltage sensitive relay (or an ignition triggered relay) installed on the tarp cables. Then they won't be able to draw power when the truck isn't running. Edit: As others have said, also check the starters on both hard to start machines are good (not just working, while drawing too many amps) and check to see what is drawing the current from the batteries.

Suggestions for the battery problem: 1] get a battery maintainer/charger; 2] find the parasitic drain and eliminate it; 3] disconnect the ground cable when you park the truck or install a kill switch from Summit Racing. Will much cash on new batteries.

Hey Zach, I see a lot of good comments about your battery issues. A lot of good mechanics and ideas floating around. I’ll make this quick! Maintaining clean batteries and connections is best practice for preservation of batteries during long storage periods. Dirt, dust and debri can conduct electricity with easy and creates a “parasitic” draw, thus depleting your batteries. As mentioned by others, cables with corrosion on the inside can increase amperage pull and drain them faster when starting, having a starter that’s about to go bad, will pull to much power as well. My best guess for it is dirty batteries creating a parasitic draw. I hope you see this! Have a great rest of the year and thank you for the great content!

Yes, and installing manual disconnects on the negative post to the frame, of all your equipment will save them from discharging due to a parasitic draw. On the negative side because there is no path for the parasites to flow. (if you know what I mean) Try it on the pink truck. I'm betting you will have batteries for years, rather than months.

I thought the same at first then after reading your comment I noticed braced frames along the back wall and each stud has over half a dozen cross members so its actually pretty solid build, just seems weird not seeing any large steel colums or steel braced frames. To build a massive storm proof building probably be too expensive for the insurance company.

Hey I had the same starting issues with several of my trucks that you are having with your KW. I solved it by installing 4 batteries instead of 3 You just need 2 more jumpers and either a new hold down or make yours bigger. Since I’ve gone to 4 batteries I’ve not had to replace anymore batteries yearly or more frequently.

23:53 It's hard to say for sure but I don't see the ECM grounds going to the disconnect switch. If not that will still discharge the batteries even though it has a disconnect switch. It looks like the tarp motor ground is going to the switch so you should be okay with that. I was just working on a bus where it was hard cranking and it turned out to be the disconnect switch. I had .01 ohms but it just wasn't carrying a load as good as it should evidently. You could try putting in a new switch too. First thing to do though is to always clean the connections. A die grinder with a roloc disc works the best. They get a black staining on them that is hard to get off except with a roloc disc. It's worth spending a little more on good batteries too like Interstate, CAT, or TRP {paccar}. Napa or Walmart batteries aren't going to be that great lol.

They are called Truck Pack ES6000, they work great and keep a guy from waiting forever for the dang things to charge. We had the same issue with 2 of our trucks not starting. Brand new batterys and started the same way yours did. We put new starters in them and it fixed the problem. Old starters were getting tired and drawing way more amps to get going therefore why it always sounded like the batterys were not enough juice

Good high compression in those Truck engines, built to last. The house I grew up in had a garage door that opened in that manner. It became dangerous and had to be propped up with a 2x4, the springs got too weak to hold it up. Have a Merry Christmas Zach and family.

15:00 seem that the problem is in the starter and not on the battery pack. We had got a similar problem in an old tractor. We have changed the starter with an aftermarked ones that have a built-in reduction gear. From that day we have got zero issues with cold start
