After the first eight weeks of the 2020 season, it seemed like Russell Wilson was on a direct path towards his first MVP. He was leading the league in touchdowns, ProFootballFocus quarterback grade, and his completion percentage over expectation along with this adjusted net yards per attempt were in the top two as well. Over the last five weeks, however, things have taken a turn for the worse. Wilson has been playing awfully over this time period. Three poor games against the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, and, most recently, the New York Giants, Wilson seems to be a shell of his former self.
In my latest video breakdown, I wanted to figure out why. Based on my analysis, post-snap rotations into a two-high look, and especially “Cloud” coverages, seem to be giving him trouble. Additionally, pressure from a four-man rush along with simulated pressure from fire zone blitzes while dropping eight into coverage are also giving him trouble too.
If the Seattle Seahawks want to make a Super Bowl run after their incredible start to the year and to make up for some of these games, everybody, including Wilson has to play better. This video is almost 13 minutes long. Sit back, relax, and I hope you (begrudgingly) enjoy it!
*Note 1: A “cloud” coverage is where instead of two safeties playing as the deep two zone defenders, there will be one safety deep along with an outside cornerback that will play that role instead. It’s meant as a disguise to a standard Cover 3 or Cover 2 zone defense.

In the third quarter of the Eagles game Wilson got sacked by 2 Eagle and landed on his left hip. His response was involuntary as he winched and popped up. It was as if a deep hip pain hit him. I know this pain and you react without thinking. I think he has a left hip issue, it would limit him but not stop him.

Why does the defense give up so many yards at the end of the third quarter or in the beginning of the fourth? They can't put teams away, they always give up chunks of yards and let the other team back into the game. This seems to happen all the time when they are in the lead coming down to the end of the game.

It’s simple people, he has no feel for the rush, bad pocket awareness and bad feet. Throw in his lack of stature and you have a qb who needs a running game to be successful and the proof is in his numbers. They almost entirely come off 1st and 2nd down where the defense has to respect the run. But when the defense is expecting a pass, he is a different qb, as his 3rd down numbers historically have been bad.

O-line is giving him enough time, he’s mostly holding the ball for too long or he’s not electing to throw it away which leads to sacks for massive loses. His decision making is a big part of it too. The offensive scheme is built around an improviser playstyle so when Russ doesn't feel like getting out of the pocket, the whole game is busted. That's why we don't target the O line in the draft because there was an understanding that Russell would step up and make throws on the run where he's honestly better. This video showed that he's not a good pocket passer this season so he needs to be on the run, let his receivers run around, and sorta finish their custom routes because the playcalling has been so bad.

The scheme I think messes with Wilson and makes him feel like he has to do too much (which he does). However his rhythm is off except for today’s game, and maybe he will be back on track. Like the video brought out, he’s making mistakes on things we’ve seen him do at the highest level over and over again... it’s odd to say the least.

One thing that drives me nuts about Wilson (to be fair lots of QBs) is that they dont get called out like they should compare to other positions. Wilsons biggest weakness is not seeing the field, he misses open receivers a lot. It is frustrating because you'd think this would get fixed in the film room and just experience alone. It isnt just this year, it has been through his whole NFL career. He has something mentally going on. He needs to quit doing his podcast as well.

Russ is obviously an amazing QB in spite of his flaws, but it really seems the general categories mentioned here - simultaneously not wanting to take the safe pass & getting sacked, and also scrambling too soon - have been an issue his whole career. When a pass is attempted, he's usually brilliant (CPOE, YPA, etc), but it's those dropbacks that don't result in passes that lower his value when compared to the other elite passers. (Rodgers has had the sack issue (coupled with amazing attempted passes) most years, too. I'm impressed that this year he's lowered his sack% a lot).

@@Zzzz-jn1xt it's true he hasn't been pressure as much, but his % of pressure turned into sacks is among the better ones in the league, and he's had a great OL for years, and previously still taken a lot of sacks (possibly BECAUSE his protection is good, he felt he could stand there all day. That, or trusting his ability to scramble too much. I assume that's why QBs like Wilson or Watson get sacked a bunch). And, sack% changes less than any other metric when a QB switches teams, suggesting it's mostly in the QB's control - makes sense, since they can choose to pass the ball at any time.

What do you think about Russ trying to implement some designed pump fakes into the plays? I think defenses have been keying in on how Russell likes to take advantage of defenders being flat footed. If he sees someone with their back turned to him, he'll throw it every time. Now, defenses are playing aggressively and attacking the ball in the air and it's really shaking him. I think you can take advantage of this by pairing a double move with a pump fake like big Ben would do. Is there any reason why more QBs/offenses don't use them?

Wilson just doesn't have the elusiveness anymore. Defenses are no longer fooled. I think Denver got had in that trade... I think Wilson is past prime. He looked okay towards the end of last season, but it was against HORRIBLE teams and Penny was gashing them all for huge yardage (also some of the worst run defenses).

Pete wants a balanced attack, having a good run game is crucial for post season success. Russ is not underutilized in this approach. Efficient decision making Is one of his strongest skills not being a volume passer which he can do when needed. Russ is still central to the offense he’s just not a volume passer.Play maker with great instinct and decision making distributing the ball, running the offense with about 35-30 passes a game
