Thanks for keeping up your pace with the show! This is a difficult episode to watch! I enjoy a young person's take on this great show! It was our favorite show when it originally aired. Unfortunately my wife passed before the show ended so watching it without her was difficult but I had to keep watching, I was hooked! It's great watching how much you enjoy these episodes, keep up the great work! Lots of great stuff still to come!

David Chase on this episode- " If you’re raised on a steady diet of Hollywood movies and network television, you start to think, ‘Obviously there’s going to be some moral accounting here.’ That’s not the way the world works. It all comes down to why you’re watching. If all you want to see is big Tony Soprano take that guy’s head and bang it against the wall like a cantaloupe…The point is Melfi, despite pain and suffering, made her moral, ethical choice and we should applaud her for it. That’s the story." "The female body is a subliminal topic of narrative in this episode. In the segue directly after Melfi learns her attacker has been set free, there is a brief scene in which the screen is visually dominated by the nearly nude forms of strippers in the Bada Bing…The message of this segue is perfectly clear. This is the social compact. Women may dance naked with thugs and goons nearby to protect them. Men may watch only if they mind their manners and offer money in homage…The strippers of the Bada Bing are valuable: they make money. Yet they are the property of the Bada Bing while they are in residence. In their assent to being viewed as property of the strip club, they need never fear rape or violence (at least within the club). " "Roche notes that women are portrayed in a variety of ways within “Employee of the Month.” Adriana appears at Vesuvio in a tight red dress that would capture the attention of any man. Ginny Sacrimoni, first introduced in this episode, has a body that also captures men’s attention, but in quite the opposite way-the guys laugh at her and try to top each other’s “fat jokes.” Melfi herself runs the gamut of seductiveness: early on, she’s dressed in a sharp, sexy business suit; at home with Richard, she wears comfy clothes; after the shock of Jesus’ release, she turns into a frumpy woman. (Becoming unattractive is a way of protecting herself from another attack, notes Roche.)" One of the most problematic issues between Tony and Melfi during their therapy sessions is his oath of omerta-he can’t truly open up to her if he is to live by the Mob’s rules. The tables have turned in this episode: it is Melfi who must remain silent if she is to live by the rules of her society-she must not mention one word about the rape to Tony Soprano. The line from Gladiator that Ralphie repeats connects to this idea of Melfi gaining her soul: “What we do in life echoes through eternity.” "One thing I found really interesting about this episode was how, like most characters in The Sopranos, even the rapist is humanized somewhat. He’s a some random guy working at a restaurant and even more, he’s Employee of the Month. It’s a strange thing to consider, that a person who could do something so awful isn’t a complete monster and is even celebrated in other walks of life. From a viewer’s perspective you can see how this is possible but from Melfi’s it must seem like such an outrage, maybe downright disturbing."

For film student Elie, the guy playing Melfi’s psychiatrist is Peter Bogdanovich who was a MAJOR director in the 70s. His most important films were Last Picture Show (generally considered one of the 100 best films of all time), Paper Moon and What’s Up Doc, all more than worth checking out

This is my favorite episode of The Sopranos, and it's the one that made Melfi my favorite character. I absolutely think that she made the right choice, but more importantly, she made the choice that was right *for her.* If she told Tony, she'd have to bear the guilt of having gone against her morals, and it's not her responsibility as a victim to take on that burden. Also, I haaate Richard in this episode. I don't deny that he cares about her, but in the scene where he calls the police department, he continually disregards her wishes (first by calling at all when she's telling him to wait, then by refusing to give her the phone when she asks for it, THEN by calling again when *she* wants to be the one to call this time), which would be obnoxious under any circumstances but is particularly insensitive when she's recovering from having her wishes disregarded in the most horrible way possible. And while I also don't deny that it's not really reasonable of her to blame him for what happened, she only does that in response to him blaming her ("how many times did I tell you to call the security guard?") and lecturing her about how deserted parking garages can be dangerous places as if she doesn't know that already. He's absurdly disrespectful and condescending and I don't blame her one bit for getting angry. And she apologizes for what she said, but he doesn't apologize for what he said! (No, Richard, expressing a desire to kill the guy is not equivalent to apologizing for victim-blaming.)

As a mafia fiction story the Sopranos is realistic in that the writers never have the mafia getting involved in civilian justice. No different than Meadow’s soccer coach who was sexually assaulting a teammate... plain & simple... the mafia doesn’t get involved in handing out punishment for crimes among civilians.

Chain of custody issues are a real thing - it doesnt happen so much today as it used to, but its still possible. Basically it means evidence was mishandled, like the scrapings from under Melfi's nails which would have Rossi's DNA. Thats crucial evidence. When done properly, the baggie with those scrapings would be signed for by the nurse who took them, she'd give them to a detective, who'd sign, and bring it to where they keep evidence, where its recieved and signed for - the idea being that its whereabouts is known 24-7 and there are no gaps in which someone could tamper with it, put something else in it, ect. If the detective brings it to the evidence room and the evidence tech is gone on break for example, so the cop stands around waiting, sees another employee and says hey can you take this? The emplpyee says yes, takes it, cop leaves, employee doesnt sign, figures hell let the front desk person sign bc he homself wasnt sposed to take it, so the envelope is left on the desk, front desk person doesnt see it til the next morning when they go in... That evidence is now tainted, useless. The chain of custody has been broken and any halfway decent lawyer will say to the jury if it went to trial: "this baggie sat out on a desk where it was accessible to the public for going on 14 hours. We dont know who saw it, touched it, or messed with it. Are you going to send a man to prison based on an envelope carelessly left out like that? The D. A. knows that, so when he sees that mistake with the envelope hes going to say "cut em loose" bc their best evidence is now useless. Some D.A.'s only want to take on cases theyre sure theyll win so their record stays good. Other D.A.'s might try anyway and use the other evidence - her seeing him, her having his Palmpilot - but the DNA was their ace in the hole-and its useless now. So yeah, like i said, its much less common today, but it is real life and can happen.

Interesting last scene in this episode, the roles were reversed, he was the therapist and she was the victim of trauma. He was trying to help her and she was bottling up. Whatever the reason for not addressing it, everyone has a reason for not opening up. BTW, I love your analytical abilities and your positive energy and enthusiasm.

The SA scene always elicits tears from me and that is really unusual for me. The scene is just so disturbing…it comes out of nowhere, so unexpectedly, as it would in real life. There’s no music…just the sound of Melfi’s crying and screaming and the evil monster’s vile words and disgusting groans. I feel like I’m there witnessing this horrific act and I feel helpless to stop it.

I worked on the air in radio back in the 80s and 90s back when radio still was an impactful thing. When first starting out, I had a stalker that would masturbate outside my on air studio some nights while I was on, but always manage to evade the police. They were sure who he was, bur I had trouble seeing his face the way the lights hit the window, I couldn't identify him. They walked me to my car each night. My dad was into guns and very much wanted to buy me a firearm. The police in this town that was an hour from my hometown upon hearing of my slight interest in a gun, actually went over how to use it so I would not be arrested for shooting or possibly killing someone in my state. They wanted me to actually kill the guy because they knew things about his history that I only found out about later. He never physically hurt me, but knowing what I know now, yes I'd use my contacts in a heartbeat.

My worst fear as a woman and it's scary how it's more common to happen than it is NOT to happen. Unfortunately, cases like Melfi's are all too common, most police lack sensitivity which makes them careless and fail to protect victims and potential future victims; you'd be surprised how often evidence in this type of crime is mishandled and improperly preserved. I think not only the dream is cathartic for Melfi but saying "no" when Tony asks her if she wants to say something; that "no" was taken from her and saying it to prevent herself from falling into a debt with her patient who murders people for profit, it gives her back some power that was robbed from her. The dream and knowledge that she has the ability to squash that bug with her connection to Tony is enough for her to continue her survival.

Hi, Elie. If you ever get the opportunity you should watch Crime Inc.: The True Story of the Mafia, it's a 1984 seven-part documentary series made by Thames Television. Simply put, it's the best and most comprehensive documentary series on the Italian-American Mafia ever, and one of the best documentary series on any organised crime group in general. It covers a lot of ground over those seven episodes. You really should give it a watch.

Most times when we see Grape scenes we don't see so much of it at least in the few I have seen in movies/TV. This was so hard to watch and I think the show runners intended it to be, maybe as a reminder to us all how horrid it is. What crosses my mind is the actress who portrayed it and if she had trauma after the scene. I mean we envision the scene from an onlookers perspective and find it too much. Could it leave a lasting effect to play the victim or perpetrator here? Regardless, Lorraine Bracco's performance deserves praise! I'm not sure if she was nominated or received and awards for her work.

I wasn't looking forward to this reaction. This is the hardest episode of the series to watch. I think one of the reasons it's so hard to watch is because Melfi has been a bit of a mother figure to Tony (and by extension us too), and to see that horrible thing happen to our figurative "mother" is too much to handle.
