I think the best explanation for “sweet child o mine” is Gorr trying to save his kids and wife from a famine by praying to the gods, to which the gods don’t respond and his family dies, hence the following lyric “where do we go now”. It sets up a connection with the villain and is a lot more logical for the movie.

Angela was his sister in the comics which was done with Hela in the last movie so unless there is some stuff happening she's out too. I just wanna point something out. Children in Viking times actually had their last names as their fathers first name and then "son" or "dottir" depending on if they're a boy or a girl. So Thors last name is Odinson. So calling Angela Odindottir actually isn't just lame and unoriginal it's also historically accurate! The uhh... the vikings were not known for their subtlety Edit: as people in the comments pointed out these naming conventions don’t apply in modern times in most Scandinavian countries. Hope that clarifies things!

I believe that the "not subtle" part was her original given name Aldrif, which if you check the translation means "adrift". Also, Icelanders still keep that custom, and some even have a secondary surname based on their paternal grandfather (-sonar). In the case of single mothers (or divorced mothers that cut off all ties with the fahter), the name used in the surname is the mother's, and in the case of people whose father has a second name, they use the one their fathers is mostly known as. As a side note, they've recently added -bur as an alternative for people who register themselves as "gender neutral".

I mean, it’s not like the vikings invented patronymic naming; they have found Ancient Greek pottery shards with patronymic naming on them from the 5th century BC, where the earliest recorded northmen raids wasn’t until year 700-something AD. It was really disappointing that Marvel removed Lady Death, changed Thanos to a misguided ecoterrorist instead of the pinnacle of "That Guy Who Thinks Escalation Is The Solution To Every Problem" trying to make a girl love him by flexing on the universe, and retconned in Thor's secret sister instead. Blocking the introduction of Angela is just one more disappointment to add to the pile.

Calling her "Odinsdottir" is just following old Norse naming conventions. That custom only died out relatively recent, a few hundred years ago, as part of a modernization and streamlining program that led to the growth of the Swedish empire. With a growing modern military, things like everyone having the same last name started to become a bit of a problem

Many common last names in all of Scandinavia still carries this tradition. If any last name ends with -son or -sen, it’s stems from “son of” patronymic meaning. Also, it didn’t die out as a practice until maybe around 150 years ago; my grandfather’s generation was around the last ones to have patronymic naming in Denmark. Also, while I am not Icelandic, I do believe they still do use the patronymic tradition (and being the absolute badass feminists that they are, they also have matronymic naming as well!), because the Icelandic language is very close to old Norse and as such, the Icelandic people are good at keeping the oral traditions of Norse culture alive. To my knowledge, they name their daughters and sons differently and therefore still use -son for sons, -dóttir for daughters. I remember my professor at university (who is Icelandic) telling me that they do not change last names when they marry, as your spouse isn’t suddenly the son/daughter of your mother/father. As such, even siblings could have different “last names”. I am not sure if this is still the case in 2022, but it definitely was for my professor, who is around 40-ish years old now.

I do believe it did continue in Scandinavia, but not as last names, rather being the same as the Russian patronymic system, where it's effectively the middle name. It's actually still tradition in Russia to call someone who is either older than you, or, in the military, a superior officer, by their first name and patronym. For example, if you watch Attraction, you'll see Artyom refer to Yulia's father, both Artyom's senior and a colonel, later general in the second movie, as "Valentin Yurievich"

Yeah i dont think the Phoenix will show up in the mcu just yet. The Phoenix then requires including the M’kran crystal and the host. So they would have to include a mutant. It could only work because of the Gods theme in the MCU but it would take a lot of build up. I think we will see Angela but briefly and probably at the end like they introduced Eros on the eternals. However, I would like to see Angela as the Queen of Asgard with Valkyrie. I would believe the Angela theory before the Phoenix theory.

I dont see either of these being viable, one would think we would have heard of casting news or something if it was Angela - you forgot to even address Valkyrie who is going to play a very large role in the film. The phoenix force here would be too confusing for casual movie going audiences without some prior setup. They both seem like a real stretch.

Who doesn't know about the Phoenix Force by now? We've had two crappy movies about it lol.I think fans of comic book movies are alot more informed than they once were. The whole bringing Jane as a kind of Goddess now, the sweet child thing and the fact that we already have Wanda's twins, a recast for Cassie and Kate bishop might be pointing us to Torunn as the sweet child. I know she's Sif's daughter but they could theoretically change things to make her Jane's and she would be a really cool addition to the Young Avengers lineup they seem to be forming.
