Protagonist: the leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text. Antagonist: a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary. Protagonist does not mean "hero." Antagonist does not mean "villain." I do want to correct one thing: "Protagonist" does not mean "good guy." Whether or not Remy is the good guy, he's still the protagonist, because he's the central character. To put this into perspective, Frisk is the main protagonist of Undertale regardless of the path that they take, including the Genocide path. On the opposite side of the coin, "Antagonist" does not mean "bad guy." Whether or not Skinner is the bad guy, he's still the antagonist, because he's the main conflict. To put this into perspective, if there was a story about someone who gets lost in a desert and has to figure out how to survive and get back home, the actual desert would be the main antagonist.

I have a reason WHY Remy is the protagonist. It’s because the definition of protagonist isn’t good or bad it just means the person who the story follows and try to move the story forward (hints “pro” which mean forward). And antagonist is the person trying to stop them from moving the plot forward. A good example of this is Suicide Squad where they aren’t really the “good guys” but they still are the protagonists

Yeah but Skinner tried to hide Gusteau' will that stated that his children were to own the restaurant (linguine) which is very illegal. Plus when Skinner finds out that it was Remy who was cooking he captured him to have him slave out in his new restaurant, very selfish and money driven, this also proves that he doesn't care about food hygiene one of the points matt pat says that makes skinner the good guy. Not only all of that but he was trying to find an excuse to fire Linguine or expose him (by getting him drunk) , he only found out about Remy because of his drive to get linguine fired!

@Boogeyman Or would he? If someone happened to find out that Linguine was written into the will as the owner then the scandal would surely blow up. I don't think he would have kept him as the garbage boy if Linguine/Remi failed to replicate the soup, he would just throw him out making him out to be incompetent. This is all just speculation but if someone's name was written into a will and anyone notices that they weren't received the promise reward isn't' that a scandal in of itself? A will is (by law) required to be fully fulfilled unless debts were taken out for government purposes, Linguine's case doesn't fall under this. Gusteau was the sole proprietor of the franchise and so he has every right to give Linguine the restaurant. Does that mean that the business would fail? We don't know, after all Collette and Linguine both seem to be helping towards the end of the movie (it seems Linguine DID learn from Remi's repetitive actions) but regardless, by trying to change the will without permission of the original writer through unconventional means Skinner is still commiting a crime.

Skinner got a letter from Renata asking him not to disclose the fact that Alfredo is Auguste's son. The events of the movie are speculated to happen around 2007 and the French inheritance law gives the rights to Alfredo of 50%. The fact that Skinner is a good business man and that the letter asks him to hide Alfredo's inheritance does not give him the right to full ownership and this is the reason why Skinner is portrait as the villain or antagonist in this movie. I am not 100% sure that my point is correct but I hope you didn't omit this just to make your point in this video and IF I am right I believe that this information should have a place in the video and not portrait Skinner in such a good light even though I agree on some points about Remy.

I love the theory, but you shouldn’t mix the words “protagonist” and “hero”, as well as “antagonist” and “villain”. The protagonist is just the main character, who the story is about, it doesn’t have to be the “good guy”. Specially with the several comic villains getting their own movies as protagonists, like the Joker, Suicide Squad, Venom, etc... (except this last one does turn him into the hero, but he still does a lot of bad thins before saving the Earth), Remy might be the real villain and Skinner the real hero, but that doesn’t change their protagonist and antagonist roles.

This was a painful video to watch, but he's 100% right. I loved the movie, but the issue regarding the germs and the fact that the villain was technically just doing what any rational person would in his position is something that bothers me. Actually, it bothers me more that it doesn't bother more people. Is Skinner likable? No. Is he flawed? Yes. But I don't think he's really as evil as the movie makes him out to be. Though I understand that since this movie shows the perspective of Remy, Skinner is going to be the antagonist framed as being 100% evil in every way.
@johndoe-gk9dt2 жыл бұрын
although i whole heartedly encourage Pat to continue making these videos because they are so entertaining, i have to say that i will have to heartily disagree with almost every point he brought up. Firstly, he makes the statement that remi is a stealer and a liar. That is true in this movie but i also feel like it is not the point. At the beginning of the movie they are taking food from garbage. Dare i say that this only loosely represents a case of stealing. The whole movie we see remi struggle internally with being a rat and being a human. Conforming to his rat lifestyle or conforming to his human lifestyle. walking like a human or walking on four paws like a rat, eating like a sophisticated human or eating garbage like a rat. I could go on and on, but the whole point of this push and pull about him not wanting to steal but also giving in is his battle with himself about his identity. It is about representing the internal battle within himself between what he THINKS a rat is like and what he THINKS a human should be, and consequently what he will ultimately choose to be as well. I think that it is a natural process of the human condition, to want something but to fall short but to strive to be better next time. Stealing was a more impactful way to saying that in that moment of anger, remi was led to believe that maybe he will always be a rat so he might as well act as a rat, thus becoming what he was hoping to evolve away from (cue nick’s speech in zootopia about why he has accepted that he is sly because he is a fox). It is an internal battle we all experience and it does make remi a hypocrite, but so is every fucking human being on this planet. Have you never made a mistake in a moment of anger? is it not the quintessential trait of the human experience to do something you regret but then learn from it, apologize and come clean afterwards so that you can grow and move on? As a side note, i also want to mention how lowly it is to present an argument without its context. Yes he does steal but it is within a specific moment in his life where he was contending with intense emotions that have been culminating within him the whole movie. If you take away the context, for sure you could paint anyone as the villain, but it is not true or fair, and someone that has integrity would have refrained from doing so.
@johndoe-gk9dt2 жыл бұрын
Following that, Pat makes the argument that remi will be ready to sacrifice everything and everyone to get to his goal. That is untrue. The whole movie there is a battle within him about choosing family or his dreams. It is not an easy battle and he understands perfectly the implication it has as well. But you cannot live for someone else. This is your life, and you alone are responsible for your own happiness. This is something that his dad understand as well towards the end. “If this is important to you, then we as your family are going to support you” (or smtg like that, not ding a verbatim quoting). See, even the plot has a counter-argument to Pat’s shaky & uninsightful critiques built right into the movie. When you choose yoru dreams, you will disappoint people, you will have to make sacrifices and it will not always be pretty but in the end it is the right choice to make. Maybe your family wants you to become a doctor or a lawyer, maybe they want you to take over the family business that does not interest you in the least. Will it not hurt your parents’ feelings that they would work so hard everyday to give you these opportunities that you are wasting on going to art school and becoming a photographer? maybe, but does it mean you should drive yourself to a point of having suicidal ideations just to have a good MCAT score and be something that doesn’t light your soul on fire and make you realize that THIS IS THE REASON I AM ON THIS PLANET, this is why i am alive, every cell in my being in singing in choir and i am in total alignment with my destiny????? no. have the courage to reach for your dreams, become who you know you are in your heart, not a shadow of what others want you to be. As a side note, i dont know if the health inspector and/or skinner are left to die because gusto’s restaurant did get shut down in the end bcz of rats so…im assuming thats a no for murder in a children-friendly movie? Misleading much?
@johndoe-gk9dt2 жыл бұрын
I will only make my last argument quickly because this is getting ridiculous and i could write for hours. Skinner was trying to exploit Gusto’s image to sell frozen foods (hm hm hypocrite-adjacent, assuming he was hired because he preached gusto’s ideals at some point, maybe perhaps?). He hid linguini’s identity from him (hm hm liar). He had anger issues and he has a superiority complex. He treated people terribly because of it and purposely made linguini’s life hard and then tried to extort him lateron. He WILLFULLY tried to make linguini DRUNK (hm hm consent, cancelled, manipulation alert???) to coerce information out of him. He called the health inspector to shut down the restaurant (ok, health concern, but if he cared about the restaurant he might’ve thought ab all the cooks there that count on this job to survive and given them a chance to clean up this rodent issue instead of RATTING (poutoum tss!) them out). He clearly had an agenda to try to get rich no matter who got hurt in the way be it linguini or his cooks that count on him to keep the restaurant in business or gusto’s legacy (hm hm selfish). I don't know why pat cherry picks his arguments (because for it to be entertaining and funny and insightful it is better if there was actually substance to the critiques) but it is very clear to me why skinner is the outright antagonist (besides ego and Anton Ego - although those get turned around at the end amirite). Skinner was decent enough to get by and confound people and earn his position as head chef. He did logical things because that’s what sane people do. You don’t trust the plongeur to cook. You should have a healthy amount of skepticism. Even the greatest cooks have been known to have a little bit of an anger issue (ie. gordon ramsay), but in the end they are people who wish for others to succeed and help them to do so even if they are not cajoling them. Not skinner. hes a villain. maybe not even the antagonist. but a villain. I will die on this hill idgaf I rest my case because i have watched 10 min of this nearly 20 min video and i have written 2.5k works and that is not okay.

I do want to point something out here, the motto “Anyone can cook” is not supposed to be taken at face value, it’s not mean to be a literal interpretation, and I’m gonna take a page out of Anton Ego’s actual review here: “....In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau’s famous motto: “Anyone can cook.” But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. *Not everyone can be a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.* “ The whole point of the phrase is not that Linguini could be a good cook, but that the genius of Remi is not only plausible, but that it is expected and that it has merit, in whatever way it can be expressed. Remi isn’t being hypocritical in that respect, he is simply being pragmatic.

It is shown he can clearly read the movie's primary language(which would probably be French if we are being real). So could he not write? Explain things to people yeah it would be a stretch, but I am sure many of the issues could have been dealt with if they took the time to solve them as a group. Which would have been a far more pragmatic response than the shenanigans for the sake of shenanigans in the movie?

First of all even if your theory was correct, Remy is still the protagonist, because you don't need to be a good guy to be the center of of a story. I think you forgot that the imaginary Gusteau IS part of Remi. So even though he SAID that Linguini shouldn't cook, he remembered Gusteaus mantra by himself, which is why he ends up helping Linguini. It wasn't a dead person talking to him, but his own consciousness. It's said multiple times that "Ghost Gustaeu" is actually Remis "inner cook". Remi hides inside the hat, because (okay this is kinda a guess) Linguini just can't cook. Well at least he can't learn to cook fast enough to be on the skill level that would be required for this kind of restaurant. Remis isn't ruthless. The incident with the lighting was more of a reckless move, since Remi was overwhelmed by the opportunity to cook for the first time. He steals from the because of various reasons: -He didn't want his brothers friends tell more people that he works at a restaurant, so he "bribes" them with the food to keep the number of rats at least to a minimum. -He wanted to make Linguini breakfeast. -If Linguini told her that a rat was helping him to cook... well you saw the ending right? - He stole from Skinner because, Skinner PURPOSELY didn't want Linguini to know, that he would inherit his fathers Restaurant. -He was angry at linguini for not aknowledging his work so far in the movie. (Linguini could have at least said, that a friend helped him or teached him or something along that line. That doesn't make his actions good, but at they have a good reason (except for the revenge part, but that was justified) Regarding the health stuff. Yeah he was shown walking on his two back feet, because he learned that cooks need to keep their hands clean. So it's reasonable he cares more about hygiene than the average rat. About the big steal? He didn't cared about the other rats hygiene because he was angry at Linguini and wanted to get back at him. Remi biting "people all the time"? Linguini, Linguini, Linguini... and Linguini? Because He couldn't get attention otherwise? And again he probably knows more about hygiene than the average rat. I don't remember Skinner enough to say anything about him, but didn't he wanted to use Remi to make food for him? Just know that I'm not a hater or anything of that sorts. I just disagreed with points in your video.

Alright, a couple of things. 1: Remy in the Colette kiss scene is not only protecting himself from getting discovered, possibly costing him his life, he is also protecting Linguine from getting pepper-sprayed since he knew Coletta liked Linguine. 2: When Remy does steal food from the kitchen for his family which is a crime, but in one of the scenes you did show, Linguine had given him the food prior to Emile showing up. I'm not saying this discredits his theft, I would just like it if you used the scene in the right context. 3: In the lightning scene, Emile didn't have time to finish his warning. Second, he didn't know that the lightning strike would happen. He didn't know that there would be a chance to get struck. 4: He does care about other people. He gives food to his family so that they don't possibly get poisoned, even though this could have cost him his chance at cooking. He cares about Linguine enough to ally with him and help him keep his job, not just because he wants to be a cook. 5: He doesn't abandon his family to become a chef. He gets separated from them and is therefore unable to be poison checker. When he is reunited with his family, he gives them the food from the food closet so that they don't eat the potentially poisoned garbage they were eating. 6: The biting was to one person, Linguine, in one scene. He does not continue to bite throughout the movie. This may not have been what you meant but it still matters how frequent and how many he bites to understand risk. 7: There is a language barrier between our two protagonists. Remy is a rat who can't directly communicate with humans. This would have made it extremely difficult for Linguine who doesn't show any signs of wanting to learn. He simply wants Remy to help him, not teach him. 8: Skinner wants Linguine to fail even after he proves himself. He intentionally gives him a recipe even Gusteau said was a failure. He also after receiving the news of Linguine parenthood via a DNA test, doesn't follow through on Gusteau's will, stating that if his heir is found within some odd years, he will become the rightful owner of the restaurant. Remy steals the documents to make it known that Linguine is the rightful heir. It does sound like Game of Thrones, but the was the wording in Gusteau's will. He also commits grand theft auto in the chase scene where he steals one chef's moped and wrecks it. Conclusion: While you are right about some of the events in Ratatouille, you seem to have misinterpreted some character motivation, not only in believing that Remy is heartless towards his family and friends but also in skinner, who actively goes against the will of his business partner. I may not be entirely accurate, feel free to correct me, but there are some substantial holes in this theory. Edit: Also thinking about this logically, the lady on the farm poisoned her trash because she wanted to get rid of some of the rats. When you're in a big city like Paris, trash is unavoidable, and there really isn't a way to stop the rats from growing in population. It is very unlikely that there would be a substantial amount of poison in the garbage.

Skinner actively covers up Linguini’s true identity as Gusteu’s son. Now you can argue he had more right to the restaurant than Linguini, Skinner helped build the business, after Gusteu’s death he’s continued to do that. By contrast Linguini is Gusteu’s son, but he has no skill as a chef, the only reason Linguini even looks like he should inherit the restaurant from a competence perspective is due to Remmy’s puppetry.
@werekitty934 жыл бұрын
This so much. If Skinner had gone about it better, he could have told Linguini he was the heir, but become a partner or something since Linguini didn't really know ANYTHING about the restaurant business. He could even go as far as to have asked (or brought it to court or something) about Linguini then selling Skinner the restaurant. Linguini doesn't know what he's doing, so I think he would've gone along with selling the place to Skinner. I had recently rewatched Ratatouille (prior to seeing this episode) and I never really got the impression that Skinner was altruistic about his feeling towards keeping the kitchen rat-free. If anything, I felt that the story was pointing to Skinner ruining the business by going the frozen food route. The restaurant lost a star from Ego, a star from Gusteau's death, and so Skinner was trying to save it with the frozen food option but was failing. Something that, as an avid Kitchen Nightmares watcher, has the potential to backfire and become worse for the restaurant. which is absolutely happening in this movie. But that's just my theory - a commenter theory.

Hara Yanto it might’ve seemed like it to the viewers and Linguine but it was actually a form of psychological manipulation. This type of manipulation is more subtle but nonetheless it can still be very harmful especially if the situation turns out very bad. The victim will end up feeling like whatever went wrong was their fault in the end resulting in more harm than what was already done. This was a real life example but back to the cartoon. In this case Linguine was refusing alcohol and stopped at a decent amount of it too. He knew when to stop and how much he could take. Skinner however continued to press and insist. Given the way Linguine is and the power level Skinner has over Linguine it would make it impossible to refuse. It’s much like a patient dating their therapist, it’s illegal because the patient isn’t on the same level as them making refusing difficult and not fair. He manipulated him in efforts to get information out of him. Personal information that wasn’t his to know. He intoxicated him by making it seem like it was Linguine’s choice when it really wasn’t. Sorry for the psychology report but it’s kind of concerning you though this to be consensual when it wasn’t at all in any way. You can’t look at the surface level of human emotion, psychology, etc. It goes far deeper.

No matter how human he may act. He wasn’t raised with the same morals humans have. He isn’t human so why would he care about “stealing”. He stated he did but part of me feels like him saying that was his efforts to be more ‘human.’ None of the rats truly cared wether they stole or not, not even the dad, the only reason he didn’t was because of the threat humans posed, NOT because of morality.

Yeaaah, no. I love each of Matpat's vids, but this one just doesn't stand for me. And it's really not just cause I like the movie, the points just don't really stand for me ',:/ for example you could try telling me everything you want to prove your points, Skinner is definitely not a good business man or chef. He doesn't "admit when he's wrong" , he only does it because everyone's watching and he doesn't wanna ruin his image in front of his employees, but it's definitely not out of pure recognition and regret toward his mistake. Secondly he calls the hygiene inspector because he doesn't want the restaurant to go on without him. He's basically like 'if I can't be at the head of this restaurant, no one will'. Not what I call fair business. Also, Remy technically CAN'T teach Linguini how to cook. Skinner asks to redo the soup in one week to prove he has talent at cooking. Teaching someone to cook perfectly in one week, especially when ya can't talk to them seems pretty hard to me. As for the 'poison detector talent' thingy, Remy didn't even know he'd have to teach it to someone else in the colony before he got taken away from his family. And when he does meet them back, he can't just go back to the colony, take the time to teach one of his fellow rats how to detect poison when clearly their sense of smell is way less developed than his own which makes the task harder, while the restaurant AND Linguini litteraly need him to go on, besides his family has apparently managed to start avoiding rat poison.

@rosed14814 жыл бұрын
I agree! A big portion of the “evidence” that matpat has for remy being selfish and evil are just clips taken out of context. For example, the part where Remy agrees to let the rats steal from the kitchen comes because Remy is extremely frustrated with linguini, as well as the pressure of his brother bringing more and more rats to the kitchen. He was just looking out for his rat pack, and he thought he was in control of the situation (gusteau is a figment of his imagination so he was telling himself not to worry about it). Even his first point doesn’t make sense. Remy is the protagonist but Skinner is not necessarily the antagonist. Matpat is the one who missed the meaning of the movie entirely. It’s about how anyone, no matter their origin, can achieve something incredible, and that people shouldn’t be held back by others’ prejudices or expectations of them. Skinner is undoubtably a selfish, money-hungry sexist-and matpat wants to call him the “hero” of the story instead of Remy, a rat that just wanted to follow his dream? Not to mention, the protagonist is not always the good guy of the story.
@beatrizpaz3674 жыл бұрын
POINTS WERE MADE!
@mybittersweetme4 жыл бұрын
Remy might’ve had some negative points on his side (given that flawed characters are a thing), but that doesn’t make Skinner the good guy in the story. Besides what you already mentioned, Skinner also *kidnaps* Remy with the intent of *forcing* him to create a new line of frozen foods. Moreover, he purposefully hid the Linguini’s mom letter so that he would keep the restaurant that was not rightfully his, and he wanted Linguini to fail so bad that he would even put the good name of the restaurant at risk by making Linguini cook for *real customers* something supposedly so nasty that Gusteau himself recognized as a failed recipe.
@doodleproductions75524 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but I believe repetitive motions (even if they're done unconsciously) did actually help Linguine cook better. By the end of the movie he's helping Remy cook in the kitchen a little. Linguine is learning how to cook, just in a different method. For example, if the teacher told me to do this one math problem without any teachings (and me just knowing the basics as I'm sure Linguine knew), then did the problem multiple times with me without teaching me anything, at one point I will probably figure out how she's doing the problem. By doing the recipe over and over again Linguine not only memorized it but he probably has the chopping motion DOWN. It's just irrational to think that Remy didn't teach Linguine when he DID just not in the conventional method that most of us use.
@daffodilclouds24434 жыл бұрын

He didn't leave or abdicate from the colony or his position though, they were separated. And on Skinner, he literally uses the image of his dead friend to profiteer, not to "make more people enjoy his food", I mean, the frozen food itself has nothing to do with Gustau himself in any way beyond his face & name. Also, Remy only bit people in one scene, and that was actually just to one person; Linguini, and that was just cause he didn't have any other way of communicating with him, and the other bites were for being smacked. So no, he didn't bite people "all the time."

I would also object to his point on abdication on the grounds of relevance. Even if he willfully abdicated, isn't he within his rights to do so? No one is entitled to your labor but you.

@@Dudeamis17 I actually don't care for KFC, cause I'm not even American, but that isn't really the same thing. Skinner used Gustau's face for selfish reasons rather than to carry on his legacy. I mean, the rest of the staff, who at least a good chunk of must have worked with Gustau too before, were more than happy to burn all those cardboards of Gustau Skinner had made. And I doubt all of them are completely oblivious idiots who'd do that to something that's good.

@@jcgabon Sure but that only gives Linguini a barely passing grade as a chef. Remember, if he fails, Skinner will easily fire him. "Skinner did nothing wrong" Besides being a bad chef, terrible boss, drugging an employee for information, committing corporate espionage (after he was fired, he spent half his time spying on Linguini and the restaurant), corporate sabotage (calling the health inspector, which would be a crime since the information he received was through illegal means and was done with the intention of shutting down the restaurant), mail theft, violating his boss and mentor's will, and a number of traffic violations and possible attempted assault. Dude barely did the bare minimum for his job and only saw the dollar signs. Remy may not be a hero but neither is Skinner.

To be fair, that "complement" from skinner about taking a bold risk was very blatantly back handed, with the intention of letting linguini set himself up for a fall. It wasnt genuine. Both those statements are true.... But so what? Yes, the compliment was back handed. Because Skinner knows Linguine can't cook. He's calling him out on the lie. And, it is a lie. It's not real and Linguine never comes clean. And... Ok, he's selfish, but this isn't a "stealing money from charities" kind of selfishness. It's just a high brow business diversifying, thus making more money because he's selling to more people. I don't really see that big of a problem of a place literally catering to the upper crust changing what they do. It's not like much is actually lost there. It sucks for the staff, but it's not like they have no options. They just have their pride and if they're willing to die on that hill, they can choose that.
