I'm ready to ruin your childhood once again! Today, I've set my eyes on Ratatouille - or more specifically our little rat chef Remy. Such a good guy right? WRONG! Remy is a JERK! Throughout the entire movie, he's only out for himself with no concern about his so-called "friends". What evidence do I have to back this up? Who is the REAL person (or rat) you should be rooting for? Time to find out!

This was a painful video to watch, but he's 100% right. I loved the movie, but the issue regarding the germs and the fact that the villain was technically just doing what any rational person would in his position is something that bothers me. Actually, it bothers me more that it doesn't bother more people. Is Skinner likable? No. Is he flawed? Yes. But I don't think he's really as evil as the movie makes him out to be. Though I understand that since this movie shows the perspective of Remy, Skinner is going to be the antagonist framed as being 100% evil in every way.

although i whole heartedly encourage Pat to continue making these videos because they are so entertaining, i have to say that i will have to heartily disagree with almost every point he brought up. Firstly, he makes the statement that remi is a stealer and a liar. That is true in this movie but i also feel like it is not the point. At the beginning of the movie they are taking food from garbage. Dare i say that this only loosely represents a case of stealing. The whole movie we see remi struggle internally with being a rat and being a human. Conforming to his rat lifestyle or conforming to his human lifestyle. walking like a human or walking on four paws like a rat, eating like a sophisticated human or eating garbage like a rat. I could go on and on, but the whole point of this push and pull about him not wanting to steal but also giving in is his battle with himself about his identity. It is about representing the internal battle within himself between what he THINKS a rat is like and what he THINKS a human should be, and consequently what he will ultimately choose to be as well. I think that it is a natural process of the human condition, to want something but to fall short but to strive to be better next time. Stealing was a more impactful way to saying that in that moment of anger, remi was led to believe that maybe he will always be a rat so he might as well act as a rat, thus becoming what he was hoping to evolve away from (cue nick’s speech in zootopia about why he has accepted that he is sly because he is a fox). It is an internal battle we all experience and it does make remi a hypocrite, but so is every fucking human being on this planet. Have you never made a mistake in a moment of anger? is it not the quintessential trait of the human experience to do something you regret but then learn from it, apologize and come clean afterwards so that you can grow and move on? As a side note, i also want to mention how lowly it is to present an argument without its context. Yes he does steal but it is within a specific moment in his life where he was contending with intense emotions that have been culminating within him the whole movie. If you take away the context, for sure you could paint anyone as the villain, but it is not true or fair, and someone that has integrity would have refrained from doing so.
@johndoe-gk9dt
@johndoe-gk9dt Жыл бұрын
Following that, Pat makes the argument that remi will be ready to sacrifice everything and everyone to get to his goal. That is untrue. The whole movie there is a battle within him about choosing family or his dreams. It is not an easy battle and he understands perfectly the implication it has as well. But you cannot live for someone else. This is your life, and you alone are responsible for your own happiness. This is something that his dad understand as well towards the end. “If this is important to you, then we as your family are going to support you” (or smtg like that, not ding a verbatim quoting). See, even the plot has a counter-argument to Pat’s shaky & uninsightful critiques built right into the movie. When you choose yoru dreams, you will disappoint people, you will have to make sacrifices and it will not always be pretty but in the end it is the right choice to make. Maybe your family wants you to become a doctor or a lawyer, maybe they want you to take over the family business that does not interest you in the least. Will it not hurt your parents’ feelings that they would work so hard everyday to give you these opportunities that you are wasting on going to art school and becoming a photographer? maybe, but does it mean you should drive yourself to a point of having suicidal ideations just to have a good MCAT score and be something that doesn’t light your soul on fire and make you realize that THIS IS THE REASON I AM ON THIS PLANET, this is why i am alive, every cell in my being in singing in choir and i am in total alignment with my destiny????? no. have the courage to reach for your dreams, become who you know you are in your heart, not a shadow of what others want you to be. As a side note, i dont know if the health inspector and/or skinner are left to die because gusto’s restaurant did get shut down in the end bcz of rats so…im assuming thats a no for murder in a children-friendly movie? Misleading much?
@johndoe-gk9dt
@johndoe-gk9dt Жыл бұрын
I will only make my last argument quickly because this is getting ridiculous and i could write for hours. Skinner was trying to exploit Gusto’s image to sell frozen foods (hm hm hypocrite-adjacent, assuming he was hired because he preached gusto’s ideals at some point, maybe perhaps?). He hid linguini’s identity from him (hm hm liar). He had anger issues and he has a superiority complex. He treated people terribly because of it and purposely made linguini’s life hard and then tried to extort him lateron. He WILLFULLY tried to make linguini DRUNK (hm hm consent, cancelled, manipulation alert???) to coerce information out of him. He called the health inspector to shut down the restaurant (ok, health concern, but if he cared about the restaurant he might’ve thought ab all the cooks there that count on this job to survive and given them a chance to clean up this rodent issue instead of RATTING (poutoum tss!) them out). He clearly had an agenda to try to get rich no matter who got hurt in the way be it linguini or his cooks that count on him to keep the restaurant in business or gusto’s legacy (hm hm selfish). I don't know why pat cherry picks his arguments (because for it to be entertaining and funny and insightful it is better if there was actually substance to the critiques) but it is very clear to me why skinner is the outright antagonist (besides ego and Anton Ego - although those get turned around at the end amirite). Skinner was decent enough to get by and confound people and earn his position as head chef. He did logical things because that’s what sane people do. You don’t trust the plongeur to cook. You should have a healthy amount of skepticism. Even the greatest cooks have been known to have a little bit of an anger issue (ie. gordon ramsay), but in the end they are people who wish for others to succeed and help them to do so even if they are not cajoling them. Not skinner. hes a villain. maybe not even the antagonist. but a villain. I will die on this hill idgaf I rest my case because i have watched 10 min of this nearly 20 min video and i have written 2.5k works and that is not okay.

I do think Matpat and you but correct me in that, really neglected the part that Remy does actually practice hygiene. I'd assume he'd at least take it a step further because it wouldn't do good for any chef if their own filth that made the people who eat their food sick but I don't blame any of you for thinking he doesn't since the movie doesn't showcase this kinda stuff.

I do want to correct one thing: "Protagonist" does not mean "good guy." Whether or not Remy is the good guy, he's still the protagonist, because he's the central character. To put this into perspective, Frisk is the main protagonist of Undertale regardless of the path that they take, including the Genocide path. On the opposite side of the coin, "Antagonist" does not mean "bad guy." Whether or not Skinner is the bad guy, he's still the antagonist, because he's the main conflict. To put this into perspective, if there was a story about someone who gets lost in a desert and has to figure out how to survive and get back home, the actual desert would be the main antagonist.

I love the theory, but you shouldn’t mix the words “protagonist” and “hero”, as well as “antagonist” and “villain”. The protagonist is just the main character, who the story is about, it doesn’t have to be the “good guy”. Specially with the several comic villains getting their own movies as protagonists, like the Joker, Suicide Squad, Venom, etc... (except this last one does turn him into the hero, but he still does a lot of bad thins before saving the Earth), Remy might be the real villain and Skinner the real hero, but that doesn’t change their protagonist and antagonist roles.

i was just about to say this as protagonist just means main character and the antagonist is just the person who gets in the way of the main character i dont like when people confuse it and think antagonist just means bad guy i mean its not a big deal but it annoys me an example would be light yagami he is clearly the villain of death note but hes still the protagonist(some people think ryuk is the real protagonist but idc hes more of a deuteragonist) or in Steel Ball Run where the person who is the hero and villain is a bit muddled as Valentine does have good motives and is to an extent a better person than Johnny but Johnny is still the protagonist(Gyro might be the real protagonist but nevermind) and Valentine is still the antagonist

I have a reason WHY Remy is the protagonist. It’s because the definition of protagonist isn’t good or bad it just means the person who the story follows and try to move the story forward (hints “pro” which mean forward). And antagonist is the person trying to stop them from moving the plot forward. A good example of this is Suicide Squad where they aren’t really the “good guys” but they still are the protagonists
@raykayproductions652
@raykayproductions652 3 жыл бұрын
not true.. the protagonist is the hero the antagonist is the bad guy. when you said “it’s because the definition of protagonist isn’t good or bad it just it means the person who the story follows. so when you said the protagonist is the person isn’t good or bad. No because even if the story follows a villain it’s still the antagonist.

No, chef skinner did try to keep the secret of linguine owning the restaurant as he wanted to keep power. Also, I get he wanted to get rid of remy, but he made linguine DRUNK just to find a rat. When he reported the restaurant to the health inspector that wasn’t because he wanted to keep the customers safe. He didn’t own the restaurant at that point and wanted to get his revenge by shutting the restaurant down as linguine owns it.

"Skinner did nothing wrong" Besides being a bad chef, terrible boss, drugging an employee for information, committing corporate espionage (after he was fired, he spent half his time spying on Linguini and the restaurant), corporate sabotage (calling the health inspector, which would be a crime since the information he received was through illegal means and was done with the intention of shutting down the restaurant), mail theft, violating his boss and mentor's will, and a number of traffic violations and possible attempted assault. Dude barely did the bare minimum for his job and only saw the dollar signs. Remy may not be a hero but neither is Skinner.

The problems here are 1. The assumption that someone can be "trained" to have a biologically sensitive nose. The story implies he was born a super smeller/taster. 2. The assumption Remy can teach anyone to cook. He tried and failed to teach rats he can actually talk to (he doesnt speak human, remember?) He tries and fails to teach Linguini because they can't communicate with "bite means no". 3. Protagonist doesn't mean "good person." An antihero can be the protagonist. It just means we see the story from their perspective.

Yeah but Skinner tried to hide Gusteau' will that stated that his children were to own the restaurant (linguine) which is very illegal. Plus when Skinner finds out that it was Remy who was cooking he captured him to have him slave out in his new restaurant, very selfish and money driven, this also proves that he doesn't care about food hygiene one of the points matt pat says that makes skinner the good guy. Not only all of that but he was trying to find an excuse to fire Linguine or expose him (by getting him drunk) , he only found out about Remy because of his drive to get linguine fired!

@Boogeyman Or would he? If someone happened to find out that Linguine was written into the will as the owner then the scandal would surely blow up. I don't think he would have kept him as the garbage boy if Linguine/Remi failed to replicate the soup, he would just throw him out making him out to be incompetent. This is all just speculation but if someone's name was written into a will and anyone notices that they weren't received the promise reward isn't' that a scandal in of itself? A will is (by law) required to be fully fulfilled unless debts were taken out for government purposes, Linguine's case doesn't fall under this. Gusteau was the sole proprietor of the franchise and so he has every right to give Linguine the restaurant. Does that mean that the business would fail? We don't know, after all Collette and Linguine both seem to be helping towards the end of the movie (it seems Linguine DID learn from Remi's repetitive actions) but regardless, by trying to change the will without permission of the original writer through unconventional means Skinner is still commiting a crime.

As I think back on the movie more, I feel like the main theme it tries to address is the reason why Chef Skinner can be perceived as a villain is because of how much he focuses on profit. He does what he can to preserve Gusteau but financially. the way he goes at it comes at the cost of going against what he stood for. Remy is supposedly the hero for trying to honor his legacy that Chef Skinner is not doing well to uphold. Ever considered thinking about thinking differently on how he's turning Gusteau into a brand for easy to prepare frozen meals and stuff? Isn't it weird when it is paired with his motto "anyone can cook"? I mean, it simplifies the way people can prepare food but is this what Gusteau himself would have wanted? It feels like it might not pair well with his status as a high quality chef and his cookbook... Despite how unsettling it is to have rats in the kitchen, Remy was well aware of how filthy he is and adopted actual hygiene which he shares with his rat family when he needed help to get the restaurant running after all the staff have ditched him. Mind you, Remy adopting human traits was the cause of friction with his dad initially... because Rats are not liked by humans and he just thinks of things from the view of a rat. All they care about is survival and they need food to survive. Humans have already reached that point and are able to do more than food which baffled him as it's unheard off. It honestly makes the movie's message feel like you don't have to compromise ideals to be successful. Remy's dreams were achieved by becoming a chef. He now owns a restaurant and his family stays there too without needing to worry about their food supply because mind you, the farm they stayed at initially was beginning to poison their meals but they don't have to worry about it here so long as the restaurant didn't get outed. Mind you, Skinner and the health inspector were the ones who ratted out their actions in Gusteau's to begin with... which is a shame but at least they got to uphold his legacy and reach their own fame in another way. Remy's ideals and dream were honestly seen as a risk to safety by his dad who relented eventually as it ended up helping the clan. Chef Skinner however could not grasp it but then when he did, he only saw him as a means to get rich but would go against his ideals like he has with Gusteau after he died. He did a lot in his power to make sure he owned the rights to him after all like how he hid Linguini's ties. How can MatPat use extreme mathematics to explain things like how Sonic's actually slow, but then confuse the meaning of protagonist and antagonist? Even if Remy is the villain, he'd still be the protagonist. The protagonist is the character the story features around, which could potentially be a villain. The antagonist is the opposer of the protagonist, which would still be Chef Skinner.

The only thing I disagree with here is that Skinner actively hid legal documents that he was responsible to bring forth, especially after he made them conclusive beyond a reasonable doubt by cross-referencing the will, the letter, and the DNA tests. However, I could even excuse this by him actively trying to make sure that Linguini was on the level when he had a reasonable suspicion about a serious threat.

Skinner got a letter from Renata asking him not to disclose the fact that Alfredo is Auguste's son. The events of the movie are speculated to happen around 2007 and the French inheritance law gives the rights to Alfredo of 50%. The fact that Skinner is a good business man and that the letter asks him to hide Alfredo's inheritance does not give him the right to full ownership and this is the reason why Skinner is portrait as the villain or antagonist in this movie. I am not 100% sure that my point is correct but I hope you didn't omit this just to make your point in this video and IF I am right I believe that this information should have a place in the video and not portrait Skinner in such a good light even though I agree on some points about Remy.

Linguini is the real villain of the story. You point out him being on the edge of becoming destitute but you don't show the parts where he's had job after job and failed them all miserably, that his mother's letter GETS HIM A JOB and the first day his actions pretty much would have ended with him losing said job, and furthermore ruining a soup that would go to a critic which would destroy the restaurant's reputation. that is without Remy's intervention. We can pretty much observe this sequence and assume more or less correctly that Linguini loses jobs due to his own incompetency, that his position of near destitution is entirely due to his own actions. The motto of the story "anyone can cook" doesn't really mean anyone can be taught to cook, it's more that a great cook can come from anywhere, and from any walk of life it's said so by Antoine Ego at the end of the movie. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink, you can give all the needed books and expertise to teach someone cooking but some people refuse to learn, again looking at Linguini's attitude and poor performance I'm sure this would be the case, he's a complete mess and buffoon and would never learn to cook properly. To put it another way, in music there's only one Mozart, one Beethoven, one Tchaikovsky, they are singular and no amount of training can turn a layman into them, they were born with greatness, in the movie Remy is the Mozart of cooking so to speak. Linguini, or chef Skinner, or chef Colette at their best would still pale in comparison to Remy or Gusteau. Again Remy is special, he can't just "train someone to do his job" I can't really argue against the morality of being poison checker, but in reality it'd be asking him to live a life of pure depression, suppressing his desire to chase after his dream and probable suicide and so they'd lose a poison checker anyways. Skinner is also definitely a villain, he's selfish and deceitful. Let's gloss over for a moment that he completely goes against his dead friend's wishes and instead usurps his name and prestige to take all of his effort and turns it into a franchise that only really benefits himself. He essentially spits on his friend's grave for profit, and there's plenty of frozen foods already. He doesn't listen to his staff out of genuine concern, it's only when Colette mentions Gusteau that Skinner sees he has to give Linguini a chance to pretend to uphold Gusteau's name, he's backed into a corner. He only gives him a chance because he thinks he will fail and when he doesn't fail he sets up a situation that he basically will fail if not for Remy intervening. Skinner can't destroy the will until the date that is specified in it, he also was merely confirming the DNA and Remy read it first before he could destroy it, it's not like he would have given up everything, otherwise why would he chase Remy? He doesn't report the rat due to health code violations, otherwise he'd have done so when first seeing Remy, he explicitly states that no one can no and he only reports it once he loses the restaurant. Remy isn't perfect, but no one is and also for a movie with talking rats that play jazz, it's a bit unfair to bring in teh sanitary side, at the end we see a full restaurant with people and rats, and if these rats can learn to play jazz I think they can learn to be sanitary as well.

Hara Yanto it might’ve seemed like it to the viewers and Linguine but it was actually a form of psychological manipulation. This type of manipulation is more subtle but nonetheless it can still be very harmful especially if the situation turns out very bad. The victim will end up feeling like whatever went wrong was their fault in the end resulting in more harm than what was already done. This was a real life example but back to the cartoon. In this case Linguine was refusing alcohol and stopped at a decent amount of it too. He knew when to stop and how much he could take. Skinner however continued to press and insist. Given the way Linguine is and the power level Skinner has over Linguine it would make it impossible to refuse. It’s much like a patient dating their therapist, it’s illegal because the patient isn’t on the same level as them making refusing difficult and not fair. He manipulated him in efforts to get information out of him. Personal information that wasn’t his to know. He intoxicated him by making it seem like it was Linguine’s choice when it really wasn’t. Sorry for the psychology report but it’s kind of concerning you though this to be consensual when it wasn’t at all in any way. You can’t look at the surface level of human emotion, psychology, etc. It goes far deeper.

Ethan G. I agree 100%. He skipped out all of the devious things Skinner had done. Manipulate, withhold important information probably more. I’ve always felt sympathy for him even as a child and didn’t see him as “evil” or a “villain” per say but he wasn’t any better than Remy. We need to remember Remy is a rat. No matter how human he may act. He wasn’t raised with the same morals humans have. He isn’t human so why would he care about “stealing”. He stated he did but part of me feels like him saying that was his efforts to be more ‘human.’ None of the rats truly cared wether they stole or not, not even the dad, the only reason he didn’t was because of the threat humans posed, NOT because of morality.

I do want to point something out here, the motto “Anyone can cook” is not supposed to be taken at face value, it’s not mean to be a literal interpretation, and I’m gonna take a page out of Anton Ego’s actual review here: “....In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau’s famous motto: “Anyone can cook.” But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. *Not everyone can be a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.* “ The whole point of the phrase is not that Linguini could be a good cook, but that the genius of Remi is not only plausible, but that it is expected and that it has merit, in whatever way it can be expressed. Remi isn’t being hypocritical in that respect, he is simply being pragmatic.

Your not wrong, but Remi is clearly doing some shady business to further his own ends. They might be pragmatic, but that still doesn't make them not morally questionable if not wrong. I mean half the time if Remi had just talked/communicated many of the issues might have been solved. It is shown he can clearly read the movie's primary language(which would probably be French if we are being real). So could he not write? Explain things to people yeah it would be a stretch, but I am sure many of the issues could have been dealt with if they took the time to solve them as a group. Which would have been a far more pragmatic response than the shenanigans for the sake of shenanigans in the movie?
