Another piece I could add to this theory in regards to bill going back in time: When Grunkle Stan was arrested for stealing nuclear waste, he pleaded he was innocent, looking genuinely confused at the whole thing The episode played it off as just another one of his secrets/lies but what if he was telling the truth?? 1) the nuclear waste was stolen at NIGHT 2) the entire time he’s stealing the waste he’s covered up so you can’t tell whether his eyes or normal 3) the only evidence we have that it’s him is his voice and cursing but we already know bill can imitate voices 4) Stan stealing the waste and activating the portal was the start of bill’s weirdmageddon and what brought him in here the first place

I just realized something. The Axlotol (No clue if that is correct) says “Absolve his crime, a different form, a different time.” Absolve usually means to remove his crime or redemption for his crime (possibly weirdmagedon), a different form a different time if the Axlotol is an all powerful being as to grant wishes and we know time travel exists in the show could it be that Bill possibly became Stan and thats where all the similarities come in, calling Ford sixer, buying gold, and the song, could it be possible that Bill became Stan and only had vague memories of his former self so the universe could force him into fixing his mistakes? But thats just a theory a mini theory thanks for reading.

Your almost spot on. If you read this, lmk. Bill destroyed his universe and his race as said in the third journal and at the beginning of the axolotls answer to dipper. His only way to redeem himself hence “absolve his crime” was to sacrifice himself for another universe. I’m conclusión it is an infinite loop in a way where he stops himself. That is why all the similarities come in. Stan also left his home and could never come back because of what he did to fords college bound future. It is all a cycle of bills reincarnation to redeem himself from burning his own home.

At the end of the episode “A Tale of Two Stan’s” a page is flashed with some coding. If you decode it a line referring to the Stan’s dad says this “Having twins was not his plan.” This can show that the parents did not want two Stan’s, but the Axolotl made it happen with all the power it has. You are probably wondering, well how can Bill be Stan at the same time. If this is sounding like a cycle then what? Well it is a cycle, there is a paradox for it. This paradox is called the Bootstrap paradox. It basically says that some events have been happening for so long that there is no starting point. It just always has been. I have not figured out how to explain the two people but that is basically my theory. Bill called the Axolotl’s name. The Axolotl granted him a new form but only if he did good things. The evidence is there.

I've noticed that there's another huge clue that was missed on the theory of Stan being connected to bill on a deeper level. In the opening sequence, when the whisper in reverse is reversed, you get "Three letters back" (I think). This hint works for solving the cryptogram in the cipher wheel at the end of the opening sequence, but interestingly enough, this also works for a cryptogram in Stan's mind during Dreamscaperers (S1E19), which is even shown at 13:51. By using the "Three letters back" trick, we can figure out that this says "Mystery shack", which shows that Stan's mind has some form of correlation with the same cryptogram seen twice in relation to Bill. Once in the Cipher wheel at the end of the opening sequence, and once in the Weirdmageddon (S2E18) opening sequence, where for a split second, you can see "Gravity Falls" on the water tower get replaced with a cryptogram that, using the "Three letters back" trick, says Gravity Falls.

Before I saw this episode, I had Googled Axolotl since it sounded familiar. Turns out an axolotl is a salamander. Which is weird, because why would Bill talk about a salamander in his presumably dying moments? But theres more. Get rid of the A, and were left with XOLOTL. This makes much more sense than a lizard. Xolotl was an Aztec god often connected with death. He was also the God of TWINS, MONSTERS, AND DEFORMITIES. I will also add that axolotls are known for regenerating limbs that have fallen off. Also, theres the creature called axolotl in the fish tank at the Mystery Shank.

After rewatching the whole thing on Disney+ (thank you random special interest reawakening), this seems highly likely, actually. In fact… I kinda wanted to point a couple other things out about this theory- both from the same episode. So, the Mayor Election episode… You guys know the one. The one where Stan runs for mayor (and loses because of a hilariously long criminal record). When the Pines Twins tell Stan that they were mind controlling him, he didn’t seem all that phased by the fact he was mind controlled. He was more upset by the fact that it was Ford’s invention helping him win (he was still mad at Ford in general after the reveal episode). When they tested the product on Soos, Soos had a more reasonable reaction to doing and saying things unwillingly. We’d have expected this sort of thing from Stan too, but he didn’t react that way. It’s an interesting detail if we say- hypothetically- this theory is true, and that Bill really is still trapped in his head. Ok- for context on what I mean here, in case I’m misinterpreting MatPat’s conclusion, Bill could be resurrected in Stan’s mind when Stan was still young, hence the “a different time” bit. That would mean the whole show is one big loop that constantly repeats yadda yadda you get the point. Anyway, detail 2: Giddeon in that same episode. When Giddeon possesses Bud, he also speaks backwards. If speaking backwards only relates to Bill/Stan, then what if the mind control spell Giddeon uses is the same one Bill uses to get inside people’s heads? I mean- we don’t see Bill chanting anything when he does the same thing- but “Spooky Evil Spells” being repeated five times backwards by Giddeon? I might be jumping the gun here, but something tells me that Bill invented a way for mortals to do what he does and wrote it in Ford’s book. It makes me wonder if it was him trying to predict what was going to happen to him and he was trying to prepare himself for being trapped in a mortal body. Just a thought, really.

OK SO THEORY . . . “a different form. a different time.” since the point near the end of the video when he talks about them being one in the same or connected somehow. what if (hear me out) instead of going forward bill went backwards in time and that’s when they became connected. we already know that time travel exists within gravity falls so this isn’t a long stretch. so basically since he was in stan’s mind and recited the verse aimed toward the axolotl his wish was granted but not in the way you might think. he traveled backwards and his other form WAS stan. now it’s just an endless cycle of him traveling back again and again.

nightmare flare the fox if you think about it stan never seemed to have any significant others or children. that means that bill could have easily been in stan’s mind for years we really could never tell.

If Bill is Stan, he can even take him over (as Stan talks backwards) if they are the same person, because Bill could not exist in his memories, or as Stan, at the same time, because he would have existed in his head as well as reborn
