Most Top 10 Most Evil Disney Villain lists never include the Coachman, when he's easily the most diabolical villain by far. Robbing children of their lives and very humanity to turn them into farm animals for slave labor. Note that his stage coach was also being pulled by donkeys, presumably the talking ones he couldn't sell. What makes him uniquely worse is that he gets away with everything in the end.

So instead of looking at this literally, figuratively might also give us some answers. Okay, so to the basics. All of the children taken are boys. They are also street kids, or lower class kids. Let's say pleasure island isn't an actual island or theme park. But more of like what the old villainous men who buy the boys would call "pleasure island". Prehaps this is like a red light district for young boys. So the kids who were normal, are turned into donkeys by their over indulgence, which could also be seen as over indulging in drugs and sex. And the creepy guys who who pick up the kids, look like pimps and they groom the kids and sell them off to higher paying pimps. Sadly, I wish this was only about child labor, but there are pimps, old rich men, drugs, and the grooming and selling of children. Its fucking ridiculous that the rich men in power make movies about their perverted lives and we think their kids movies... fuck

Yeah, even maleficent willing to forgive the king and Queen if she actually invited to the event and the evil queen only target is snow white and she doesn't give a fuck about other people. Coachman pretty much doomed thousands of kids into life of misery.

I don't know what happens in the original story, but I remember a version (probably an animated, non-Disney version) where the boys go under a waterfall to get transformed into donkeys. Eventually, the Coachman himself drinks from that water, and he is transformed into Monstro. I think this is a very clever thing to do. It gives the Coachman some comeuppance, it makes Montro more plot relevant for later down the line, and it even teaches a valuable lesson: what can happen if you're not careful with dangerous substances.

Simple-Commentator-not-really But that is not the purpose of the film. The message of Pleasure Island and the Coachmen is that if you make enough bad choices in life (like the rampant teenage hedonism that Pleasure Island represents), you can get yourself into a situation where there's no way out and no happy ending. You lose your humanity - literally! - and you become a slave to someone else forever. The reason why the Coachman gets away with it is because the donkey slavery is the epitome of a self-imposed hell-on-earth, and there is never a time in history when that is not possible. It's an ever-present danger that people can always fall into, so they always have to be wary they don't fall into it themselves. Check out Jordan Peterson's take on the whole film, it's really amazing.

The slipper didn't fit anyone else as the fairy god mother made the slipper change size to ensure it wouldn't fit any other maiden. Eh, definitely not the biggest crime compared to a literal child slavery ring but it's still a dick move. My question is this; how many of those orphans or child donkeys wished to be saved and were ignored? Why did the blue fairy decide a better use for her power was to answer an old man's late night wish about his doll being real? Why not actually do something meaningful?

Pinocchio is literally Gepetto’s son. He has to be Gepetto’s son. In the book, he becomes Gepetto’s son. Of course Gepetto isn’t gonna adopt another kid or anything. He has to have Pinocchio because that’s very important to the plot.

Solid theory. 10 outta 10 and my husband (who loves this movie) adores this one and uses this video to show to friends. I'd only argue one thing though: the Coachman may not need to fix up Pleasure Island. Considering we don't see him eat the food on the island, but the boys do, it's probable that Pleasure Island is fae-owned. We have a fairy in this movie, what's to say there's more fairies? My personal headcanon is that the Coachman made a deal with fae, so they get kids and have fun with stealing them or turning them into donkeys, and the Coachman gets a ridiculous amount of money selling them. Makes this even more horrifying and I love it.

Something to consider is that the Coachman is clearly aware of magic existing in this world beyond a shadow of a doubt. It's entirely possible the magic that puts the curse on the boys also repairs whatever damage they do, meaning the overhead can be lowered further.

Cinderella's slipper fell off beacause it was beginning to transform back. The slipper didn't fit anyone else as the fairy god mother made the slipper change size to ensure it wouldn't fit any other maiden. The reason she couldn't allow cinderella extended time at the ball, is she isn't that powerful. The fairy god mother could have seen cinderella leave the ball under such circumstances and she could have focus the magic on all the other items into the slipper.

Even by fairy tale standards, the original source material for Pinocchio is horrifically grim. Jiminy Cricket doesn't get to sing one note before Pinocchio smashes him dead with a hammer; and in the serialized version of the story, Pinocchio is HANGED at the end! Throw in some kidnapping and child slavery and oh yeah: we've got a children's story for the ages!

Aaah, that's nothing! We had so many stories back in the day, witch a boy whose thumbs were cut off by an evil man because he kept sucking them or a boy that starved to death because he was too picky and wouldn't eat his soup, or a girl who burnt herself to death because she played with matches. These "scary" stories are meant to teach children to behave well and listen to their parents, otherwise bad things'll happen. Kids nowadays are just too soft and pampered with all that pg-13 stuff. It's not about violence and showing/not showing it, it's about the lessons and morals that can be learnt from them.
@Smiuley
@Smiuley 6 жыл бұрын
Windmelodie No seriously, those stories don't teach anything. They are causing fear, but fear should not be the motivation to behave properly. I know the stories you are talking about (in my Struwwelpeter book there were several stories, probably you have it, too?) and it didn't cause anything but being afraid and uncomfortable. Especially Max and Moritz, who turn into chicken food in the end, which is just horrifying.
@Windmelodie
@Windmelodie 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I had that book as a kid as well. I also had a book with many of Grimm's fairytales (the real ones, not the disneyfied ones with all happy ends) and to me, it helped. As a kid, those stories helped me understand that my parents knew best and that I should listen to them and behave. Even nowadays, I don't drink, I don't do drugs, I don't whore myself around, I don't smoke and I don't disrespect my elders. Sure, the stories were sometimes scary, but then my mother would assure me that those were just stories...but that bad things COULD really happen if I didn't listen and misbehaved. My parents were authoritarian, but not conservative, so I was given a lot of freedom, but at the same time, if they said no, it meant no and I respected that. I never yelled at my parents or insulted them because that is how I was raised. Sometimes, things have to be scary in order to be understood. That's just real life and you won't help your children from hiding it from them.

8:20 Ferris wheels back in the early 1900s, being a relatively new invention, would not nearly be as cheap as a used Ferris wheel from 2008. The amount of donkeys flooding the market from their trade would certainly have decreased their value. Also Matpat used the modern cost of donkeys and presumably they would have been more much more common but also used more frequently for labour because nowadays they have been replaced by machinery, this drastically would have changed the price of a donkey

In the third Shrek movies he states that he was used to swirlies and wedgies, two types of bulling acts done on humans more than animals. Then when Puss in Boots pushes it Donkey only states that some things are best not known. He could have been referencing that he used to be human and now is trapped in a donkey's body.

donkeys are probably worth more than 76$ because while you adjusted for inflation, donkeys are much less usefull nowdays than they were, so demand was higher, rising up the price

Thats true, but there were also more people breeding them. Plus, the kind of people that would actually buy a donkey nowadays are rich people who can afford to take care of animals with no gain. Those people are looking for pets, and so they are more likely to spend a lot of money.

And don’t trust EquineNow. They are all scams on there. The most I’ve paid for a donkey is 200 dollars. That’s the most I’d paid for a standard or miniature. Mammoth donkeys are the expensive ones!

10:30 i would've gone with the value if gold at what ever year he is basing this on rather than gold today, which is far more expensive. Also, you might want to buy gold and especially silver if youre in 2021

There is one thing you aren't considering. What if the first boat was adult workers? They get paid upon completion except they get fed the stuff that makes donkeys instead. That would cut down on startup costs by quite a lot.

To be fair he may have just purchased a preexisting park, and if he did build it one should consider how much cheaper build costs and labor costs were at the time. The initial investment would not have been nearly so severe.

Yeah matpat had not considered hat was actually in the park compared to the Harry Potter land plus he is considering the price of making a park in our time it would have been cheaper counting inflation
@overlorddante

Another thing to consider; the time it takes to repair the park. It's no quick task to rebuild and restock the island and you can't be bringing in boys while it's in shambles. However, who says they destroy it every trip? Might not be a common occurrence in the first place.

In the franco-prussian war there was a high utilitzation of mules in the battle field, what if a lot of the orphans ended up in the wars that killed theire perents. This adds a hole other level of twisted to this theory.
