The thing with having 6 or more villains, they don't need to feature extensively and have an indepth storyline. They can use it as a way to introduce a villain to the universe, they don't even have to have an interaction with Batman during the movie because if they do it skilfully enough then they can simply tee up the sequels and have a trilogy or more of movies which interweave between themselves.

Maybe that fight scene is actually at the start of the movie and thats what makes the riddler target him. Maybe the riddler sees a difference between justice and brutality. Maybe he thinks there cannot be justice that is motivated by vengeance.

To be fair I think that most of the “villains” in this will just be them starting out. Like I’ve heard Penguin in this one doesn’t like the nickname Penguin at the start. I think we’ll see the start of a lot of potential villains but that they won’t actually be playing the full supervillain role yet. They’ll just be corrupted, or good and getting corrupted, people in Gotham who the audience will know have a future as villains. Like maybe Two-Face will get the acid attack but won’t actually come out as a full villain yet. There could be mention of a crazy guy in clown makeup without actually seeing Joker. I think the Court will be exposed by Riddler and Batman following his clues, and then the rest of the rogues gallery will be out and active for future films.

So a sort of "he's Batman, not Bruce Wayne" version of how Gotham ran? Because that sounds like an equally interesting version of that [Gotham's] story. I enjoyed watching Gordon and Bruce develop a mentor/student relationship and how Gordon became important to GCPD in the first place. And why he lets Batman even exist in the city. But seeing those villains rise while Batman is active would be really interesting. I just hope a movie/90-120 min story can pull off what five years of 12-22 episodes (depending) could.

I could see the twist maybe being the court either gets taken out violently, or is hurt badly enough that they have to hide and rebuild, but as a result, the crime in the city explodes as all the mid-tier crime bosses and supervillain-wannabes fight to get a slice of the pie and establish themselves. This is what usually happens in the real world when you create a vacuum, and it would help explain why Gotham is such a mess later in the timeline when Batman has supposedly been fighting these guys for years

That was incredibly disappointing to most people who already know the identity of Hush being a childhood friend of Bruce and not the Riddler. It felt like they just threw Riddler into the movie so that there’d be a twist. The reason why Hush wears bandages in the comics is because he’s a plastic surgeon who’s cut off people’s faces in order to give himself surgery to look exactly like Bruce Wayne so he could steal his fortune and destroy his empire as a form of revenge.

He may be testing if Batman is really his “Allie”. One thing MatPat forgot to mention about The Batman's parallels with Se7en is that at the end of Se7en, John Doe, wanting to break Mills and provoke him into killing him, says "Become vengeance, become wrath". And what does Batman say when someone asks who he is? "I'm Vengeance..." pretty cool little detail I think which could be a nod to the claim MatPat makes where he says Batman beats this dude to death after his moral code has been broken, he's become Vengeance, what John Doe (or in this case, The Riddler) wants him to become.

Due to Matt Reeves' resume, I suspect highly this movie will subvert that. Matt Reeves is a director I note as being able to humanize non-human characters as well as things most would say are less human. Batman may be human, but I'm betting this story will be Batman rising from his anger to become Batman. In the end, Riddler will fail due to Batman's humanity, but that's just me.

One problem with that theory: If that scene happens at the end of the movie and this is batman's second year as a vigilante, how come a thug doesn't know who batman is? If this was year one, it would make sense due to needing time to build your reputation. If a guy in a bat costume was a vigilante for two years, pretty much everyone would know of the existence of batman.
