Originally posted in June 2015, this is a re-edited version that runs 1m 20s shorter than the original, with the usual cuts to tighten up pacing and reduce the film clips, which has been posted to coincide with Death Wish. I've also increased the volume on my voiceovers, which were a bit quiet because I was trying to make my performance a bit less extreme for such a long review. Clips from Die Hard with a Vengeance are now also in HD in this version. This episode is notable as being the final episode posted on Blip, which closed in August of that year. I don't think this has ever been on KZbin before in any form, so enjoy!

Been a fan of your Bad Movie Beatdown series for a while, never commented on this one when it was first posted, but I gotta point something out. None of the first four movies were terrorist plots. The first was a heist disguised as terrorism, the second was traitors helping a foreign war criminal escape justice, the third was another heist disguised as a mad bombing spree, and the fourth was yet another heist disguised as yet more terrorism. ...Heck, the fifth is a heist movie too, it's just incomprehensibly inept.

Out of all the Die Hard films A Good Day to Die Hard is the only one written intended to be a Die Hard film from the outset. Die Hard was originally going to be a sequel to The Detective due to contractual obligation, Die Hard 2 was based on the sequel novel, Die Hard With Vengence was going to be a Lethal Weapon film and Live Free or Die Hard was going to be a standalone film based on an article before being rewritten as a Die Hard film. Yet A Good Day to Die Hard film feels the least like a Die Hard film.

@@gamestation2690 The interview quoted [in text] in the review has Moore saying 'I was told ''Good news, you've got the job...bad news, you've got the job!''' which says a lot! The full interview with Woods says that he wasn't on set during filming as he'd moved on to other projects. Sadly I don't think the studio really cared about the quality of this, they just wanted to churn another film out.

I saw this with my dad. While we were both disappointed the thing I remember most about seeing it for the first time had nothing to do with the film. Only British folks might remember this but there was a McDonalds advert about a man bonding with his new stepson over a burger before the film with a ''Nah you're alright' motif. Look it up if you like. There were some lads behind us and one commented, ''Why would you go on a date to McDonalds?'' His mate replied, ''It's not a date, it's a father and son!'' I was amused by this of course but I don't know why it stuck with me so much, but it's certainly more memorable than anything that happened in this film.

34:09-34:13 "It neutralizes radiation: trust me." These are words that were written, acted and filmed without a single hint of irony or sarcasm (or shame) in a film that wants to be taken seriously and happens to have this take place in a well-known real life nuclear disaster site. I've heard lazy and stupid writing before, but this line is insultingly horrendous. Shame on whoever wrote that.

John Moore strikes me as the kind of guy who complained about Live Free not feeling like a real Die Hard movie who was way overconfident in his ability to do one better and was completely oblivious to it all the way through. I think that’s almost confirmed by his cutting Lucy out in the extended cut and her presence being a studio mandate to begin with. Ironic, as that’s at least 10x the Die Hard movie this is. He seemed to think that nonstop action, bloody deaths and lots of swearing were all it took. Rather than having mounting tension, a layered plot and actual character moments. And man does it feel small. Somehow a movie largely confined to one building feels much grander in scale than one with them zipping all around Moscow and then Chernobyl.

I am pretty sure this movie was planned as a standalone Jai Courtney vehicle, but somewhere down the road, the producers realized that this reeked of straight-to-DVD smell, and decided to rework it into a Die Hard sequel instead and just shoehorn Bruce Wayne into it, with little effort put into rewriting the script to make it fit in more with the other Die Hard films.

9:40 Interesting that they would reference Frank Sinatra, since "Nothing Lasts Forever" (aka Die Hard 1) was a sequel to "The Detective", a novel that was adapted into a Sinatra film. Sinatra was even given the option to play John McClain (because contracts), but he turned down the role due to his age (even though it would've made it closer to the novel, but I digress).

I think this movie may well be the reason I'm extremely critical of twist villains. Twist villains can be done well; without spoiling anything, some characters from last year are great examples of how to make them interesting, but here it just feels like an obligation to do so, because it's a political thriller (albeit, not a smart one) and it just leaves a boring, forgettable villain in a franchise of really memorable ones. (Thomas Gabriel from the fourth one wasn't the best villain, but he at least had presence and posed a genuine threat.) To me, Hans Gruber was a fantastic villain, both because of Alan Rickman's masterclass performance and because he kept the viewer on their toes almost as much as John McClane; you knew he had a plan, but the fun was trying to second-guess and figure out what trick he has up his sleeve. I love villains like that, it's what made me a fan of the Song of Fire and Ice novels, particularly Tywin, Baelish and Varys.
@justdannyquinn
@justdannyquinn 6 жыл бұрын
The reveal of the villain in this film just feels like it was thrown in at the last-minute. It really doesn't surprise me knowing that they didn't know who was the villain was going to be until two weeks into filming, because it really feels like that. The sad part is if they had maybe had the reveal a little earlier into the film and not 10 minutes from the end, I think the twist could've potentially worked and they could've spent a bit more time to give Komurov (I think that's his name) some presence and give him the opportunity to pose a threat to the heroes. But no, we have to rush through everything so that we can get it all into 90 minutes.

I mean MAYBE if the daughter had turned out to be playing everyone (including her dad) the whole time, then that MIGHT have been interesting, maybe. Also in Die Hard films the "twist" is usually about what the villain actually WANTS, not WHO the main villain is.

I saw it in theaters and loved it, as did all my friends who grew up on the series. If you're really not down with the theatrical version, the Unrated Blu-Ray/DVD fixes the flaws of the cut down theatrical edition. And in fact, I've never talked to a single person who disliked it in real life. But suddenly, I go online and it's supposedly some notoriously hated film. I mean even in the first Die Hard the villains allways had this "technological edge" and in 4.0 its ramped up quite a bit and its cool to see an older McClain having to keep up or fight against technological threats. Mathew - another point about them supposedly driving from Moscow to Pripyat in the film's time. Their route (as I think you showed) would include the Moscow-Kiev Highway: I've travelled on this between Moscow airports and there are traffic cop checkpoints at regular intervals. To make that journey in less than 12 hours would mean going over the 100 km/h speed limit - now that will get the attention of the Russian traffic cops (DPS), and all Russian cops carry guns. Oh, a radiation cure, huh? A "fuck you" to the victims of Chernobyl and all of the Soviet nuclear incidents (and there are a few more than many people don't know about).

I recently saw some 80s action films (including Die Hard 1 and 2) - not all are very good, but at least the color doesn't make me feel like life has been sucked out of everything, and they usually take the time to show what's going on so we can follow the story. @AyresForceOne

Fun facts concerning the look of the film: the movie was apparently shot in 2:35 like the others, but the director changed it to 1:85 because he thought the car chase looked better that way. So why not just change it for that one scene and leave the rest of the movie at 2:35? A lot of big movies nowadays are shown in mostly widescreen but then shift aspect ratios for one or more select scenes (mainly in IMAX theaters), so why couldn't this? Also, the cinematographer on this movie also shot the first John Wick, which had those kind of long, smooth camera movements that the first Die Hard had. And that's too bad, because he could've shot a really good-looking Die Hard movie that fit with the others if the movie wasn't being directed by a f*cking hack.
@FilmBrain

Not only that, but John Moore was completely wrong: the car chase, and the framing in general, look horribly cramped. And it has an abysmal colour grade to boot.

I've seen five films directed by John Moore, and chronologically, each one is worse than the one before it. Behind Enemy Lines (2001): actually not a bad action flick, just a bit generic Flight of the Phoenix (2004): not the worst remake ever, but pretty lackluster The Omen (2006): another pointless horror remake, with 9/11 references no less Max Payne (2008): I guess one bad Mark Wahlberg film wasn't enough that year A Good Day to Die Hard (2013): the review says it all

I don't mind McClane's son being a spy. As long as McClane is normal guy thrown into a huge situation, having him just being on vacation in a place taken by terrorists, working as cop then being chasen by the brother of a dead enemy terrorist, working as a cop and that getting him tangled into terrorism or going to find his son who happens to be a spy into deep stuff, its still the basic common man into situation bigger than him. John Moore has directed six major motion pictures so far, in a two-decade career in Hollywood. Half of his movies were massive flops at the box office. He has yet to direct his first movie with a "generally positive critical reception". His newest release is from 2016. I'm sure his next project "American Hostage", currently in development, will get him over the hump. If there is anything we need in 2022 or 2023 (or whenever this will come out), it's a another jingoistic "rescue the hostage" action movie. Pew, pew, pew! Booom! Pow! Backlit helicopter rising at dawn in slo-mo, flap-flaap-flaaap. Tacka, tacka, tacka - BOOM! Clichéd one-liner... 'Murrikah! Credits. On some clips I see of Die Hard 5, there's this ONE commenter that thinks that McClane acts more like McClane in 5 than he does in 4 and that the villain is better. Yeah, it doesn't matter that he slaps a random person, kills a bunch of innocent bystanders and bullies his son, he's making quips, so it's John McClane! Also, no, the villains of Die Hard 5 are horrible. Timothy Olyphant played the villain of 4.0 very well, he was charismatic and had a plan. The villains of A Good Day To Die Hard are Bugs Bunny as a typical action villain and a self-insert OC as a typical action villain. Shitty plans, can't shut up.

Quite a lot of movies do that [most noticeably in recent years Mission impossible Rouge Nation and Fallout] and even films that you'd imagine were fixed long before filming have ad libs/ changes on set [Matthew Modine said the ending of Full Metal Jacket was changed on set for example] and sometimes things don't work out on set due to budget etc [The baby carriage scene in the 'Untouchables' was a late replacement for a train action sequence who's budget fell through at the last minute] and sometimes actors drop out and you need to change things to accommodate the new cast member as people are often cast while filming is going on [Simon McBurney in Rouge Nation was only cast during filming despite being key to the plot for example]. Clint Eastwood will rarely take on a script that can't be filmed immediately but he's surprisingly rare.
