I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. These women… I couldn’t click fast enough

@@Leftyotismactually it’s quite wise. I’m a therapist but also I tend to run away from my fears, when really, in order to resolve them you must confront them, and feel them. Then you see inwards and realize that fear is not you, you are big in comparison, and then it will have no control over you, it might still be there, but the more you allow yourself to confront it head on, the more control you will have over it, and the better you will process it.

I liked the old 80's version. To me, the new one just sounds like a higher octave mixed with the original. The voice scenes in the new movie are awesome, though. Paul's reaction to the RM's command especially.

Darwi has the best quote of all time in the Dune universe. “All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. This line is applicable to real life proven by the disturbing statistics that there are more psychopaths in positions of power but by virtue of the nature of psychopaths, I would add to the quote: "... It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corrupt and the corruptible."
@HoodieProduction

Yeah, I hate the idea that power somehow corrupts everyone. The reality is that power shows what kind of person you really are, and the irony of it is that people who shouldn't have power are drawn to it and people who should have power refuse to accept it out of humility.

The Bene Gesserit is the original inspiration for the Jedi Order - the Voice, the Weirding Ways, near complete control of mind, body and even soul and consciousness - Frank Herbert was championing strong female leads and his respect for women is reflected in the world he built for the Bene Gesserit order.

It's a good observation that they are one of the prime movers of events in the Dune universe, but I think they are the prime example of humanity's tendency to grasp for control instead of accepting a disordered universe. Their order seeks to control actions of others, the decisions of other organization and religions, even supreme control of their own bodies. To a Bene Gesserit, lack of control means annihilation.

@@jameslabbe4119 I'm not sure they represent whole humanity, though. It seems to me they're somewhat similar to real life Christianity, a.k.a. a portion of entire race that seeks to control everything in a way they see fit, even if that control comes at the cost of the rest of the race. Similarly "all roads lead to Rome", in Dune every event after Butlerian Jihad leads to Bene Gesserit, they're the beginning of every plot and root of all evil. Ironically, the nature of their activities is what destroys them in the end, what's with the Honored Matres and everything else.
@TheMimiSard
@TheMimiSard 2 жыл бұрын
@@jameslabbe4119 And in that, I don't think they intend harm, on the large scale, but they do need to stand emotionally detatched from everything so they can think clearly. Their big goal in the first book is to create a leader who has access to *all* the ego memories, not just the female ones, as the Reverend Mothers cannot access the male memories. When their goal came about though, it was out of their control, thus did things they did not understand. Leto II however had a goal that was beneficial for humanity on the large scale, but also cast him as a tyrant, a fate he accepted when he stepped onto the "Golden Path". Even after Leto's time, the Bene Gesserit was split between those who despised Leto and feared his legacy (especially the Atreides family line), and those very few who understood his purpose despite his tyranny.

what I have always found interesting about the box, the test of pain and self control. Is that I know what my reaction would be. I recently in the last year or so almost lost every finger on my right hand after doctors put my arm in in a cast and left me alone for several hours after I had lost all feeling in my arm. My fingers were the only thing I could feel. The burning...like someone had lit my fingers on fire while ants crawled all over and bit and stung my fingers in different places all at once. All the while I felt like they were freezing. I was dealing with a cold sweat at the same time, body tremors, shivering, and a sense of disorientation. I still have my arm, but have incurred permanent nerve damage in my fingers and hand because of it.

An experience that's testing for sure. About 15 years ago, I made the bad choice of going down a cross country skiing track on a cold night after forgetting my gloves and face shield. It resulted in severe frostbite where amputation and skin grafting was on the table. I was able to keep my hands and even had a successful career in the Army since but to this day I am incapable of feeling temperatures in my arms from the elbow down or my face. I feel pressure levels but no hot or cold and it's resulted in me getting burned badly a few times because I had no idea I was touching something burning hot. While I was recovering from the initial frostbite and the flesh on my forearms and hands literally dying and falling off it was sheer agony though.

The sisterhood is one of the most powerful groups in the setting, individually each one then is able to take of entire squads of sardakar without been touched, they literally lead the galaxy by the nose having agents in almost every main house and yet the woman playing the Lady Jessica somehow thinks Dune was a sexist portrayal of them that her and the director “”fixed”” in the new version of Dune. I don’t know if she didn’t bother to read the book or just somehow missed the whole point of what the Bene Gesserit are about, they make the idea of a cats paw look like barging into room screaming while painted in neon colours and stabbing all the guests just to subtly move a chess piece, they have been manipulating all the great houses for hundreds of years to make Paul (well Paul was meant to be a girl and was meant to be his some but you know what I mean) a power so great it can control all the stars and the plan was to have a leash on him with them holding the lead.

I like how Dune at it's core doesn't try to rely on some mystical superpowers, radioactive animal bites, magic, the force, warp, or divinity, but instead on the simple power of the human mind + a drug or two. That all it does is simply push Shao-Lin or Fakir techniques to a greater perfection with the use of exotic drugs. It makes it all so real, you really get the sense that it's achievable IRL if only we discovered a plant or an animal that secrets a proper hallucinogen.

The Bene Gesserit wrote those treatises at the exact same time as the Orange Catholic Ecumenism and the reorder of galactic religion. They are constantly brought up together and the "sisters" are both represented by a futuristic nun outfit and "an order" of such "nun" clothing wearing "sisters of the faith". It's pretty clear where _Frank_ was going with the imagery, even if _Brian_ has reordered this to de-stress this intrinsic (and tongue-in-cheek) link enough that it is seemingly ignored here.

I don't think you made it clear enough that the first goal of the Sisterhood was to preserve humanity as a species, to prevent our extinction by outside forces, and guide the species to "maturity." Like a mother who is determined that her children will survive. That was the purpose of the Kwisatz Haderach: to access the genentic memory of the Y chromosone, and use prescience to see future timelines to avoid extinction. That's why Leto spent three and a half thousand years breeding for a mutation that would make humans unseeable by "future" sight. If humans could not be predicted, could not be seen in future timelines, they could avoid being attacked by alien forces. And I do think the Bene Gesserit did fear that eventually, humanity would encounter non-human intelligences that would seek to destroy them. The BG took a really long view of history and their mission. The Kwisatz Haderach wasn't the ultimate goal, he was a way to see to the survival of the human race. That's also why Leto din't destroy the Sisterhood. They had to be reminded of that further goal, and taken down a peg or two. Three and a half thousand years of boring "Peace" would be imprinted in humanity's and the Sisterhood's genetic memory. Humanity would never again long for a "Golden Age." The first "Golden Age" with machines almost destroyed it, Leto saw to it there would never be another "lapse."

It's understandable why, though. They contradict/retcon the original series a lot. It is nice to see them covered, though. @@cevk For sure. Having read most of them I can kinda separate what was in the Frank books from Brian & Kevin's, but little annotations of where info is from would be really nice to see! Sidenote: In regards to the retcons, I see them as exactly what Leto II taught. The only constant in the universe is change, and not one man (Frank Herbert) can rule the universe (The dune sequels past 6).

What surprised more that the Voice was the total control of the body. How they can control every single muscle of the body and every function of the organ, that's why they were almost immune to poisons, that were of wide use. And make think that in a far future the humanity one day can conquer his own body. Not to that extend but I feel as a realistic goal.

While the ideas about discipline and self control which eventually lead to superhuman powers are interesting, the Sisterhood on the whole is amoral and evil. It is also interesting how really fragile their plans really are...I mean their centuries if not millenia old breeding program and schemes are messed up because one of their members - Jessica - fell in love and gave her lover a son he wanted instead of a daughter she was supposed to.

@@nunyabiznes33 It was mentioned in the second book, specifically in the prologue, that the Bene Tleilax actually created their own Kwisatz Haderach through direct genetic manipulation (CRISPR in concept if not in name), but the resultant individual killed himself. And also, given the emphasis placed on lineage in the Bene Gesserit order, I highly doubt that they would sanction the creation of their messiah through genetic manipulation.

If it was known that the Bene Gesserit had such powers of imprinting, who would anyone, in a position of power, accept a Bene Gesserit concubine or wife? It seems like such an acceptance would make one vulnerable to Bene Gesserit control, and thus no longer their own agent.

They didn't use it often because they knew that would happen. Only extremely dangerous people would be imprinted, like Feyd, and they wouldn't be aware of it, and the BG very rarely used it unless pressed by great need. Just death wouldn't be enough because BG don't really fear that since they often share their inner lives and thus exist in their Sisters. It would require a threat to the Sisterhood to make them use it. The fear of that distrust is why they hate the Honored Matres and call them whores. After all, the BG exists only to serve.
@-Bill.
@-Bill. Жыл бұрын
There is also the fact that they were undoubtedly *extremely* skilled lovers. Having perfect control over every single muscle would surely enhance the experience and might explain why they were highly sought for concubines and wives. A BG trained wife would be able to help you run a Great House as well, as they were trained in every discipline. They were generally loyal to their families unless directly ordered by the Sisterhood.
