This series deals in heavy contrasts. Benevolent aliens causing the downfall of an entire Planet and their own species. An avaricious snake actually being a hidden saint. A wise owl leader being fascinated by death. A shady penguin being a selfless vigilante. A squirrel interpreting the rage of their partner as a blessing from heaven. A nihilistic alien copy, aware of all the mechanisms of destruction, yet neither willing to share clarity nor accept its own demise and clinging to the last shreds of illusory life. A mystery solving cat erasing the last bit of evidence remaining of those who perished. Behind the facade of absurdist humour, the deep questions of life, intention and self are wait to be answered.

So much of what ghost-Darius said makes sense now: "I'm dead, Lark... I'M DEAD!" "No you don't understand... and I don't want to tell you..."
@Slayer-Knight Жыл бұрын
The concept of the "memories" being able to have conversations and process new information is so disturbing. It is like the ship is replicating consciousness. And the memories are now sentient beings that can feel the fear of "death" when they get erased... When Lark was telling them to move on, he basically was telling them to commit cognitive suicide...... If what we saw is "memory" Lark fading away in front of real Lark, then that means that memory Lark had the courage and could dissociate himself from his conciousness because he know he is not "real". But he is.

It's actually quite crazy how, despite her insistence that she wouldn't survive, Crush made it all the way to the end. Also, nice little poetic ending with Chalice's funeral being the opposite of the previous "series finale" funeral with Darius. The Owl King's was of a noble figure having the... skeletons in their closet exposed and showcasing he wasn't quite so virtuous. He was also very certain he was going to Hell. Meanwhile, Snake Angel is embarrassed that, despite his front of being an avaricious pervert (precisely what Darius secretly was), Chalice is exposed as a gentle, charitable, and helpful soul. Nice full circle. The writing on this show has been absolutely brilliant.

This is one of the most intelligently-plotted and paced series on the channel. It answers essentially every question posed, heartbreaking or not, from how the animals of the park coexist, what they eat, and the many, MANY supernatural mysteries that are at once hilarious and horrifying in scale and spaces out the answers just long enough to keep you wanting. But even masterpieces aren't flawless. Shadowstone Park is written so tightly for everything but a single, all-important question that still burns in my very soul. Filmcow has this uncanny ability to make some of the most fascinating "fridge" stories I've ever seen. It happened with Charlie the Unicorn's finale too. I thought most of these Shadowstone Park videos and those videos were good, but not too interesting beyond that. But after they concluded and I get a chance to sit with it, I can't help but revisit them and come to all kinds of realizations about just how horrific, tragic, or beautiful some of these events turned out to be. What seems complicated at first is only so because every little bit of dialogue or every piece of information implied has a point. It's delivered comedically at the time, so your mind is more able to dismiss most of it. But when all the pieces are together you gain some deeper insight into what these characters are going through.
@theuncalledfor Жыл бұрын
IMO, Charlie the Unicorn was... not a very good series. Until the finale changed everything. Then it was suddenly amazing. (I still really like the self-parody series Charlie teh Unicron, though.)

This entire series is phenomenal. I've been giving my two cents, summaries and theories in the comments and everything came together as some had predicted (the mark of an amazing mystery) or in a reveal that was somehow greater. There's still plenty of mysteries left to uncover and time spent in this world is a treat in itself so we'll all be waiting with baited breath. That scene, where Lark's "ghost" disassociates as he realises what Nil is saying and when he vanishes in front of the living Lark. Chills. Also, pour one out for the "scoundrel" known as Chalice. Such a heathen. Never stop being the god of animation KZbin.

Spark: It loves that a lot of questions were answered, but only the most important ones. Leaving more questions, but ones we can do without knowing and to speculate. It also really REALLY enjoys the small touch of never revealing that Chalice gets deleted or not and it doesn't acknowledge it and treat the audience as stupid either. Leaves it up to us to guess if Lark's memory returned to its body or if not. This was really good filmcow. While it is normal for your audience to ask for more of what you create, regardless if its healthy for the series. It understands that's not how a good story works. It does however hope you make more things like this. This was fantastic and we need more like this. A darkness with a veil of humor and absurdity covers well enough until you reveal it. It can't think of something that has this blend. It needs/wants more of it.

I had to listen to Nil and Lark's ghostly conversation a second time to fully understand it. The ghosts aren't real, just holograms. Their behavior is just AI generated, extrapolated from the last ship's recording of them. Lark, Ava, and Pecan can see them -- and are immune to the tampered ship's effects -- because of a mental link, created by viewing the "memorial." And that's it. The last mystery, finally answered. It's been a wild ride. To quote Nil: "My kind couldn't stand to see suffering, and now _twist,_ we're here"

And why does it seem that even the sane ones CANNOT nourish themselves on sunlight or whatever Nil said the point of this was?

@@americangirl6654 Basically, the animals are only sapient because they were originally linked to the ships of Nils people, which gave them their intelligence. The virus that the CIA put on the ships used that same link to revert the animals back to their feral state. The memorial ship, however, was not compromised. Connecting to that ship established a new link away from the compromised ships. So when the CIA virus goes off and sends the signal to make the animals feral again, those linked to the memorial ship in orbit are immune to it and keep their intelligence.

For those who have some issues wrapping their heads around the story, this is how I understand it: At some time into the past, when humans were alive and animals were as we know them, the highly advanced aliens (Nil is a representative of the species) who can metabolize anything into energy and upon death are changed into a different state of being and whose spaceships can create anything desired, were traveling from planet to planet giving the same ability to species there as to create a universe where there is no killing and suffering. The captain of each spaceship bore a name of a number of the spaceship's crew, meaning that any death of the crewmate would be reflected in the captain's name. One spaceship, designed specifically to collect memories of captains, as to prevent data loss, was stationed on Earth's orbit. While all the animals on Earth adapted to this new reality pretty much instantly, humans were still killing animals, probably for fun or just for the taste of meat. To amend that, the aliens gave animals higher intelligence, on par with humans, hoping that humans will have no choice but to see them as equal beings and stop the killing. Also, in a rather sentimental move, they had turned the one spaceship on Earth's orbit into a memorial, gathering recorded memories of every animal on the planet. The memories of animals which link to the memorial was severed will continue to live as a simulation/AI. Humans only became more frustrated with the fact that animals now can think, talk and defend themselves, so to bring back the former order of things they (specifically CIA) had hijacked aliens' spaceships (except the one on the orbit) by replacing their AI with their own creation (virus?) that had one job - revert changes done to animals in regard to their intelligence. The spaceship would then mark the border of the "containment zone" in which the sent signal would take effect. But, humans fucked it up, because their virus not only reverted animals intelligence, but also made them extremely violent. In a desperate measure to prevent this, some alien captains gave orders to their spaceship's AI to completely discharge and make it non-functional for a period of time (as I understand the spaceships had some form of recharging function, so they were aware that this won't be a permanent solution), though it would also kill all the crew of the spaceship. This is how Nil got their name, as NIL (similar to null) in programming stands for the value that doesn't exist. When the spaceship crashes, Nil's body fells through the crack into the cavern below and turns into a living crystal growing below the park, while their recorded memory continue to exist as a simulation/AI. The spaceships that were compromised and active turned animals in their respective zones into feral creatures, which, as I imagine, in the end brought the extinction of the human race. Animals that went feral were unable to leave the containment zones, so those small pockets with the inactive spaceships became safe havens for the intelligent animals. Unfortunately, through the years inactive spaceships were slowly gathering energy and started activating again, meaning that they will continue the process eventually. In a more present time Darius entered the spaceship activating it, but thanks to his weird scull thing makes the spaceship constantly produce skulls, which is so heavy on the CPU that it takes much more time for the CIA's virus to fully take over the AI, but still sends a faint feral signal, slowly turning nearby animals. Lark also falls into the spaceship which, as it turns out, through connection to memorial and some permission hierarchy, makes him immune to compromised spaceships' signal and gives him access to memorial's recorded memories and see them as a holographic representation, which he incorrectly interprets as ghosts of the animals that died and by helping them to "move on into the afterlife" he unconsciously makes those memories being erased. In some other place similar to Shadowstone Park, Ava enters the spaceship, making her immune to the feral signal and later witnesses the activation of one of the spaceships and either manage to prevent it or escape the containment zone. She then embarks on a travel trying to prevent the same happening in other places. In Shadowstone some animals are starting to fell to the faint signal and become feral and the only thing that other residents can do is to exile those animals into the neighboring containment zones. Unaware of the truth they believe that the stone is what keeps them safe from becoming feral. Lark is investigating the increasing number of feral animal and murders, when Ava arrives into the Shadowstone Park. Eventually he, Pecan and Ava enters the spaceship just as it's about to be fully affected by CIA's virus. As Shadowstone's spaceship is about to send the signal, crystallized Nil sends a beam that deactivates it again, hopefully permanently this time. During the whole ordeal Lark's link to the memorial is severed which marks him as dead and makes his recorded memories to become an independent simulation/AI "ghost". Lark and Pecan joins Ava on her travels.

Nice summary, I believe it was said that the ships have solar batteries

Holy crap! Thank you so much for sharing this. This makes so much more sense now that you’ve explained it.
@sanelyinsane84972 ай бұрын
The ships regain power through solar energy. Also Ava said she learned a command sequence from one of the "numbered ghosts" that causes the ship to discharge power and go inert again. However, this must be done while the ships AI is still conscious, and the CIA virus has not taken hold. She probably met another captain, like nil, who hadn't fully sunk into despair and who was able to give her that sequence.

I watched the original series for the first time years ago. Thank you for you hard work and love put into this goofy, weird series. I loved it so much and I will always have a place in my heart for your shows, Jason. It’s been great and I can’t wait to see what’s next ❤

I can't believe it didn't show Gloves. But it showed the mouse and Crush again so I'm happy I was also thinking that Lark Pecan and Ava must've became ghosts when the stone became crystals and fell to the ground Basically everyone was guessing that the ghosts weren't really ghosts. So I'm glad we got to find out more about that And I'm also glad that this is not the end and that there will be another arc Edit: Nevermind I just realized it shows Gloves at the end! I am completely satisfied with this series My last question though is how exactly Lark fell into that cave when he got his ability to see ghosts

Gloves is in the after credits scene.

yeah, and it's such a short credits that I didn't even have the chance to close the video, and bam, gloves is back

Good question about Lark! I assumed it was giving him the ability to see ghosts, but this ending confused me so much I'm no longer even sure that's when it happened.
@Sentryalmighty Жыл бұрын
I think the "when" of Lark falling into the cave wasn't important. One day he just slipped and fell into the stone, or somewhere around it. Which paralyzed him, but he was also scanned by the ship, giving him access to the memorial

The stone was never actually doing anything to protect the park, the mad animals never crossed the boarder because they had been pushed INTO a containment zone.

Really glad to see the comment saying it's not over. When I saw epilogue, I think this might be the filmcow series I was/would be most upset to think of an end to, maybe tied with horseman. I dunno what my actual fav series is that'd be a tough call, but for whatever reason seeing epilogue made me upset until I saw that comment. I guess I would have to assume it's the combination of the characters and the mystery. Like the ends to Charlie [aren't we still waiting on and end to "teh" though..?] and Llamas were great and they felt fairly timely though by all means give me more Charlie and Llamas, but it felt legit. Def didn't want this to be over just yet

Only Jason Steele can pull off starting off a show with a funny horse with gloves and end as one of the greatest pieces of slow burn sci-fi I’ve ever seen

Jason! I loved this! My favorite series of yours by far, and Ive always been a huge fan. I fell in love with these character's immediately, the plot was beyond intriguing and you have just the same type of absurd humor as me and you make me laugh like nothing else. I can't wait to see what's next, both for Shadowstone and yourself!

Cool story, cool piece of animation, you really change my mind about what it means to create good art over the last decade. You’ve stayed consistent, interesting and intelligent, your not afraid to take path less taken, in fact that’s usually the point. Keep innovating, obfuscating and just being absurd. I hope to make work like yours one day.
@cheatsheet3325 Жыл бұрын
I like a lot of your work, but I do think this is your best so far. There's more focus, unity of effect, and confidence here than in DHOA:TFF or CTU (even if we didn't get any songs). I know you've been doing this a long time, with great popularity and success, so I hope I don't sound silly saying that I feel like your creative voice is more distinct and realized here than it has been before. Well done.
