Not to mention, for someone persecuted by the Nazis, Magneto sure does act like one himself all the time.

Yeah, we’re getting a lot of that kind of thing now. Incredibly shallow morality where pretty much any crime can be forgiven so long as the killer chooses to stop killing. Imagine if a school shooter just stopped after 5 minutes, said “sorry,” and started bandaging survivors. Yeah, that’s *something* I guess, and it *might* influence whether they get the death penalty, but it would be fully insane to say it negates all the deaths. If Darth Vader had survived Return of the Jedi, he might not have been a slave to the Dark Side anymore, and he might love his family, but he absolutely would have faced the justice of the New Republic. And Luke would not have crashed the trial to rescue him, because that would have been insane.

That part really felt like the writers just went into the Magneto story auto-pilot. "... and in the end everyone forgives Magneto, because that's how all these movies end." That whole bit about the QuickSilver redo got me thinking of Guy Ritchies Sherlock Holmes films. In the first one, he establishes "Holmes vision" where we see Holmes reading people and planning his fights down to every punch and parry. Then in the sequel, Game of Shadows. Holmes repeatedly tries to repeat those feats of precognition. But stuff keeps interupting his train of thought and he's forced to improvise. And to really hammer home how formidable of an evil mastermind Moriarty is, he even intrudes into Holmes HolmesVision and thwarts his every move... so he has to throw out all clever moves and just... flip the table so to speak. And do the unthinkable. I just think it's a great example of repeating the thing people loved in the first movie yet building upon it to show new aspects and situations and escalating the threats. Just a pity Guy has yet to repeat that innovative filmmaking.

The best thing about this movie was the introduction sequence. There's a story there that should have been the whole movie. In the X-Men franchise humans are always shown as irrationally hating and fearing mutants as something new . But this movie could have shown it as a completely rational response. Ancient mutants are conquering the world nation by nation and no one has the power to stop them. A group of regular people have to come togethe to end the reign of the false gods. That collapsing pyramid took a lot of work. They had to set that up decades in advance. And who knows how many years to get all your people inserted into the honor guard so that you're able to attack apocalypse at his most vulnerable point just in case the pyramid collapsing doesn't work. I would have loved to watch that movie. A David versus Goliath Tale, even with all their preparation they only barely succeeded.
@antigonish54514 ай бұрын
They could have shown apocalypse on the battlefield slaughtering entire armies on his own with his lieutenants. They could show them having meetings behind closed doors where they discuss finding more mutants and intermarrying to create a new ruling species with humans has nothing more than slaves. Something the modern anti-mutant characters uses a dog whistle attack. The end of the film would be the same as the start. There would just be an after credit scene to show that he is still alive, then the third movie could be apocalypse returning. That way you have a great villain character build up in a short amount of time.

That has extremely bad undertones when you consider Mutants often stand in for oppressed minorities, with the idea you're suggesting basically twisting it to "minorities are actually bad and want to rule over others". One thing I really hated about the script (besides everything) was how characters kept telling Mystique how important she was, like the younger mutants all treated her like a rock star or something. But why? All she did in the last movie was almost start a war between mutants and humans, I mean if anything she should be totally hated, not admired. Of course, the reason for this was because Jennifer Lawrence didn't want to do the movie, and so the writers kept writing in dialogue about how important she was - rather than actually give her an important part to play in the movie, which obviously was beyond their talents.

Including the way that he makes short work of the police using his daughters necklace to cut their throats, and his wailing afterwards "IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT FROM ME!!?" cursing God, blaming him for what's happened. He DID NOT write Days of Future Past--he edited it. The draft script for DoFP was written by Matthew Vaughn, who directed X-men: First Class. He wanted it as the third movie of a trilogy but the studio wanted to do it now, and he refused. So they took the script, Kinberg stamped his name on it even though he didn't write it, got credit, and now it looks like he can write, when he can't. He can edit, which is a good talent, but there's a vast difference between writing and editing.

If there's one character in this film who should've appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine, it's Apocalypse. Him working with / replacing Cassandra Nova would've made the stakes of that film higher. Deadpool 3 is still a fun film, though. To be fair, the FoX-Men already ended with X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The next decade only dug that grave deeper with this film, Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants.
@omarslayz4 ай бұрын
why would they redo apocalypse though? Sure he’d be cooler since the people who made deadpool & wolverine actually cared but using a newer never before seen on live action character like Cassandra as the villain was great. The actress was surely better than Oscar Isaac as apocalypse. We should just save apocalypse for the mutant saga after Secret Wars cause it’ll be enough time passed after this bad movie for people to want to give him another shot than inserting him into a deadpool sequel 9 later💀
@funwithtropes694 ай бұрын
@@omarslayz, Cassandra can be taken down with wits film-wise. Apocalypse is someone they cannot mess with. The filmmakers clearly have problems with choosing a villain that fit within the story. Despite being an effective threat, Cassandra felt like an idea that should've been explored by previous MCU films like Doctor Strange 2, Ant-Man 3, and Captain Marvel 2. Place Apocalypse within the context of the film, and the stakes would've been greater and still played out the the film.

He was a giant hot mess by the time DOFP started shooting, in which the studio had people working around the clock to make sure he even showed up to the set. In Apocalypse, it’s obvious that most of those people moved on and left Singer to his own devices, which is why it was a steaming pile of dog poop.

What was Matthew Vaughn doing around this time? He should have come back to direct this if he wasn't busy with Kingsman: The Golden Circle, since he left being the director of Days of Future Past because he was directing the Secret Service.
@Davidsworldtravels4 ай бұрын
Mathew Vaughn was pushing them to make DOFP the end of the trilogy but they wanted their money right away so pushed for DOFP to be made before this. So then the character arcs are complete and there’s no reason to keep the different decade gimmick going. But they just push this to be in the 90’s for no reason and push Apoc even though he doesn’t fit for this team dynamic.

Let's agree that the best part of X-Men: Apocalypse was the scenes with Quicksilver and Wolverine. The rest was done very poorly... This movie had potential to be good, but it was just more proof that there's something wrong with Fox's X-Men franchise (even though I love McAvoy and Fassbender as Professor X and Magneto). I also really like First Class and Days of Future Past. The best X-Men movies.

The best part of Apocalypse is the Quicksilver, 'Sweet Dreams are Made of This' scene. It took one of the best directed and most creative scenes from Future Past and built on it. It's much more elaborate, creative, funny and feels like a proper evolution of what came before it like a good sequel should (and like the rest of the didn't.) Honestly, the slow motion scene from Future Past now feels somewhat quaint in comparison.
@Davidsworldtravels4 ай бұрын
But it doesn’t really fit as a comedic scene bc Havok literally just burned to death and their home is being blown up. So it feels random and inconsequential just like everything else in the film. Having their only refuge/home from a world that hates them is heartbreaking but is also played as the movies only big joke sequence. None of it fits.

2:37 I think the best thing about X-Men Apocalypse was the idea of an ancient egyptian mutant returning and seeing the modern day. I really enjoy learning about history and that basically reverses the idea; with someone from the past observing the present. But they didn't make anything out of it.

My favorite part of the movie was the strained father-son relationship between Magneto and Quicksilver, that never truly gets resolved. If we lost anything from this film series not continuing, it was a resolution to this.
@12classics39Ай бұрын
That relationship should’ve been the centerpiece of the continuation of Magneto’s story after DOFP. Don’t give him a family just to kill them 2 seconds later and totally rehash First Class’ “Erik becomes Magneto because of grief and vengeance” plotline. Let him bond with his son who DOFP has already established, and finally form a family that he can successfully protect and be happy with.

The first scene of attempting to assassinate Apocalypse is the best sequence with a lot of story to tell, yet they choose to use situations to unfold the story - They planned it for years, maybe lifetimes by spying how the procession works several times until they know that this is the weakest states of Apocalypse. - Write it down and hope for the next generation will continue the purpose and one day will raise the rebellion or scheme the treason in the next and following transference ritual - The betrayers must be really working there for really long time that they know about this place, and infiltrating them knowing well that they’re heavily guarded - Because of how big and risk of the plan, less people knowing the plan, more chance that the plan will works without getting exposed before the day of ritual - The real plan is to “kill” not to “bury” Apocalypse, 5 megatons of rocks in his weak state, the betrayer ensured that he will be dead for real, because if not, he can lift all of it as easy as ending their civilization. - So the traitors who were planted in the ritual room, IS WILLING TO DIE. A few of mere humans have to face all of horsemen, and if they manage to dispatch all of them and Apocalypse, the crumbling pyramid will finished them all. - while all of the horsemen is doing best at their jobs. War and Pestilence defend the body in close combat by their sheer strength, Famine use environmental torches to fried the traitors, Death use telekinesis as an attack and creating the barrier to protect their master even in her last breath. . The opening has many subtle story to tell, what an epic opening and yeah….it went downhill from here.

Ngl this was probably one of the funniest Filmento videos to date, the Toy Story scene but with bad superhero films and Magneto yelling at Ronaldo are absolute bangers. Oh yeah, what's good about Apocalypse... For some reason I remembered this movie more fondly than others in the franchise, I think the reason is that I only remember the better scenes with some of my favourite X-Men, such as the Quicksilver evacuation and a couple of Cyclops moments. Apocalypse on paper is also a very cool villain, even if the movie executed him very poorly.

The good part about this movie was when I thought Psylocke would have a role in the future movies (because they ended with the Dark Phoenix tease...). The theme of "Modernity" (Old v. New) is very confusing in the movie because it's the opposite of what he should be. Apocalypse can reshape his body freely (and eventually copy other mutant's powers) but his main power (in the comics) is that he is a genius technopath who is able to conceive technology far more advance than its age and he then merges it with his body (his greatest power is that he has merged with Celestial technology and that allowed him to conquer Egypt). There's absolutely no way he would be startled by modern tech, that's why a lot of people didn't get the character. Apocalypse is a believer of "survival of the fittest" but that also applies to the "most advanced". When he recruited his team he should've gone to Magneto first and then scaling down in order of power. That would've made it clear what he stands for and also it would've given the movie a sense of progression.
