I really had some bad professors in College. I remember my writing classes, the guys I was stuck with _hated_ plot-driven narratives, and instead demanded that we write _Character-Driven_ narratives. But like this video shows, you can have both, and you _should_ have both. Filmento talked about Magneto's character, but honestly he could've gone even further with it. Days of Future's Past is probably not only the best but also my Favorite X-Men Movie. But not just because I think the plot is largely solid, but that the story actually makes me _feel something._ And that feeling comes from two characters - Logan and Xavier. It's as Xavier told Logan, "You will have to do for _me_ what I did for you." Charles was Lost in a very bad place in 73, just as Logan was lost with his Amnesia at the beginning of the X-Men franchise. But by finding Charles Xavier, Logan was able to find meaning again - a reason to go on, a reason to care about things again. And now, Logan does the same with the younger Charles Xavier; Logan becomes the mentor-figure to the man who mentored him. And here's the best part; in doing that adventure in 1973, Charles and Logan cement a _friendship_ that was even _greater_ than what it was in the original timeline. You could say that before they were allies, but after this movie, they are _undoubtedly friends._ They care a great deal for one another. And given the context of the movie, Xavier had to wait about 20 years after finding Logan in the new timeline, for the Logan he knew to "catch-up" as it were. Hell, there was always a chance that that Logan's consciousness was lost as the time he'd come from had been erased. But then, at the end of the movie when Logan has woken-up and goes to talk to Xavier about it, and tells him...the look of surprise and joy that comes over Xavier's face is just so _heartwarming._ It's made him realize that after 50 years, the man he knew - his _friend_ - is finally back... And it's like he said...The two have _so much catching-up_ to do. ...And then they had to make the Logan movie and completely _ruin that ending._ See, that's why I love this movie; because it's the relationship between _two men_ and a friendship that spanned more than _fifty years._ Both were lost, and they each helped the other find themselves again. It was a friendship beyond time...
@12classics3915 күн бұрын
Agreed. I’d say their relationship is more like father and son by the end. Even though Logan is way older than Charles technically, his amnesia lessens the weight of that, and Days of Future Past really does feel like a “son going back to save his father” movie. Also, you can easily write off the Logan movie as taking place in a different timeline. Its worldbuilding is centered around there being no new mutants born in 25 years by the 2020s, whereas the end of Days of Future Past shows many young mutants at the school in the revised 2020s. So it’s definitely two different worlds.

The thing I love the most about this movie, the thing that I think makes it the quintessential X-Men movie, is that its villains are literally fear, hatred and discrimination themselves: the true sworn enemies of the X-Men, and never before this movie have these enemies actually felt so *alive.* It’s like a malevolent force, the force Charles Xavier has been fighting against his whole life, is *actively* manipulating events towards the hellish future, and the human and mutant villains are nothing but unwitting pawns in this force’s hands. The true final battle is not against Trask, it’s not against Magneto, it is against hatred itself. And how does Charles win? How does he save the world? By doing what he does best: healing the soul of a broken child. I mean, it’s literal fu****g perfection.

Days of Future Past is one of my favorite superhero movies ever because it has SO MUCH PLOT. Like you said, everything that is shown actually has a purpose. It never wastes time on mindless stretched out action scenes but when there is action, it's extremely well done and is used to move the plot forward. And shit, it led to such an emotional pay-off. I got goosebumps when I saw Jean Grey appear in the end. Not only did this movie fix the train wreck of X3, it managed to use that shitty movie to make the ending of this movie that much more gratifying.
@wafflingmean44774 жыл бұрын
I think one of the best things about this movie that gives it massive stakes is that unlike many other movies with Wolverine, a fight can't solve the problem. Often writers choose to throw in a nerf for his healing because he could solve the problem in like 10 seconds if he was at full strength, cos at that point he's pretty much immortal. But in Days of Future past, it's quite clear their goal is to redeem Raven, not kill her. So Wolverine can be present in all of his awesomeness and power without it reducing the film's stakes. Even in the finale, when for once it looks like against Magneto a fight will solve their problems (since Wolverine has no adamantium), Magneto makes quick work of Wolverine and places the stakes back onto the decisions of himself, Mystique and Charles.

I remember when the trailer for this movie came out and I saw someone say that it was gonna be trash because of all the trash that came before. And here I was thinking, "You can't base how you think something is gonna be like based on what came before it." Comparing Days of Future Past to previous films does nothing for it. You need to see a film for what it is. And considering it technically is its own isolated story, best thing to do is just see the movie for what it is, not based on the legacy it has or lack thereof.

This movie was true greatness out of the gate. One of my all time favorite movies. Not just as a sci-fi or superhero movie. And they did something very smart setting up for the new class to takeover in First class for the reboot. It gave us a chance to get familiar to the new cast and put faces to names without having to think about it. In that way, we didn't waste any time during the movie first class trying to figure out or get accustomed to them in the roles we were already familiar with other actors having played. So we could just slip right into "First Class" without wasting any time and dissolve into the story itself.
