Yep, also fun fact. Over 20-30 miles, a prehistoric human would outrun horses and pretty much all other animals. There is actually an annual Horse Vs Man marathon where, although the horse usually wins, the difference is usually less than 10 minutes

@@theshontman We were persistence hunters. We can get rid of heat more efficiently so over time and distance large animals build up too much heat. In the time that they run ahead of us they don't have enough time to get rid of all the heat before we catch up and they have to run again with more heat buildup until they are too exhausted to continue. There is a tribe in Mexico whose people routinely run 100 mile races in bare feet or simple sandals made of flattened 2L pop bottles.

There's a wonderful interview with Peter O'Toole, who played Lawrence of Arabia, and who rode a camel during several wild rides in this epic movie. He had a hysterical story about riding the camel, saying at one point that, at a certain speed, the camel thinks it's a gazelle and starts leaping across the sand, and that all you can do hold on for dear life.

Idk if anyone else has mentioned this but Winston's character is kinda sad if you follow it. He's a sad old man in the RAF after ww1; drinking his sorrows away because 'all the other laddies died in the sky'. Later you can either interpret it as he's happy to be given a purpose by helping the gang, or he's excited to possibly die because he misses alll his friends and wants to die

Fun fact: Arabian horses and camels actually both have the same top speed of about 40 mph. The crew with the horses must have just been crappy riders to be so far behind.
@R0ary
@R0ary 3 жыл бұрын
Eh, another contributing factor may be that camels have better footing on sand, which would probably slow the horses down some, additionally (though probably not applicable here) is the fact that if horses are unused to the smell of camels, they will be skittish around them. Granted, if they are used to them, that would obviously no longer be applicable.

An excerpt from the script of the scene when Evelyn is introduced: "Standing at the top of a tall ladder between two of these rows and leaning against one of the bookshelves, is a rather uninteresting British Girl: eye-glasses, hair-in-a-bun, long boring dress, your typical prudish nightmare. This is EVELYN CARNAHAN. We're going to fall in love with her." I love this movie so much, it does exactly what it means to do, and that is to entertain us.

Both versions are fantastic. I loved the 1932 version for the acting beats & slow subtle build, but given the time, the effects work was "best that they could do:. Whereas the 1999 film had wonderful comedic timing and the effects, makeup/wardrobe, conceptual work, stunts, direction and casting were elevated, nay in some cases, innovative (for instance the particle rendering used to create the creature's sandstorm effect).

Winston is by far the best character in the film. For the few times he is on screen, you absolutely fall in love with the old Veteran Pilot reminiscing about his hay day in the Royal Air Cavalry, mourning that he was the last of his long lost Compatriots, and eagerly jumping at one last chance to do something heroic. Salute to my Man, Winston.

When it came out, the special effects in this movie were incredible (and IMO they still hold up well today, over 20 years later), but other than that you wouldn't walk away from this movie raving about how amazing it was. You *would* walk away from it talking about how much fun it was, though. It's a great popcorn movie, and it doesn't try to be anything else, which is exactly what audiences (including myself) wanted from it. And that's exactly why it's so much better than the 2017 Tom Cruise The Mummy.
