I like how Breaking Bad sits with the concept of murder for a bit. Jesse doesn't just shoot a dude and move on with the story. We sit with him and watch him break down over taking a life.
@marvelsandals4228 Жыл бұрын
Especially the circumstances of it too. This wasn't self-defense, revenge, or neutralizing a dangerous threat. Jesse walked up to his door, rang the bell, he opened it, Jesse whipped out the gun, and Gale said go ahead you can take whatever you want, just don't hurt me...then finally "please, you don't have to do this," before Jesse blew his brains out. THAT is wild. Sure, we understand why he did it...but DAMN. How the fuck do you just move on from that? Now you have to live with the reality that you violently murdered a defenseless dude who never hurt a fly.

@chaseb5376 Жыл бұрын
I will say. Something that took me until my 3rd rewatch to really notice. There’s a reasonable amount of dislike for Marie. (Understandably so. Her personal storylines are the least developed and she’s usually written like the annoying Aunt in the family dynamic.) but the way she cares for Hank and is patient with him through this time really elevates her as a character. Not many people have that personal strength or love for someone else. Even with the limited screen time you still see her at her best and I think that’s really cool.
@kareningram6093 Жыл бұрын
I feel like the writers just didn't know what to do with her character.
@marvelsandals4228 Жыл бұрын
I think in the first few episodes they deliberately set her and Hank up to be unpleasant, with Hank making very crass comments, upstaging Walt at his own Birthday party, insulting him, etc. Meanwhile Marie insults Skylar and Walt, tells Skylar her short story collection won't sell, and of course steals the shoes and tiara (something Hank later admits has been an ongoing habit of hers she goes to therapy for), etc. Like Hank, I think over the course of the series they slowly develop her into a more 3 dimensional character. I think the first time she earned my respect was during Walt's "intervention" where the family (led by Skylar) urged Walt to accept Gretchen and Elliot's money for the cancer treatment, which he declined. Everyone else sided with Skylar, but the first voice of dissent was Marie, who said "I think you should do whatever you want. It's his decision." Skylar FREAKED out and acted like Marie was insane, but she was straight up spitting facts. This man has cancer, at the time, he thought he had MONTHS to live, and he has to grapple with the emotional fallout of that reality, trying to make impossible decisions about how to spend his last days on Earth, and Marie of all people was the first to come to his defense and say he deserves the right to make his own decisions about his life. Yes, obviously the situation is more complex and there's nothing wrong with discussing it with family, but she really showed him a tremendous amount of respect. Instead of telling him what to do or insulting him for making the "wrong" choice, she wanted to hear what HE wanted. If more people had shown him that kind of respect, maybe he wouldn't have ended up where he did, in such a dark place that he would even CONSIDER taking such extreme measures. It's little moments like that which let the audience see maybe there's more to this character than we first thought. Marie also challenged Hank when he was OBVIOUSLY traumatized by his experience in Mexico and after his shootout with Tuco. Hank kept running away from his problems and acting as if he was fine, but anyone with eyes could see the man's world was collapsing around him (which later led him to break into Jesse's house and beat him half to death, which almost got Hank thrown in jail). Marie immediately saw he was not "ok" and tried to gently approach him, but Hank had no interest in discussing it with her. Marie is a pretty sharp gal when she chooses to be and she absolutely cares for Hank, which we have been seeing all throughout the show. It is very sad to see him be so cold towards her rn, but as James pointed out, Hank has been through a LOT. It is hard to understate how much the man has suffered, having lost everything he once held so closely as his identity. He went from a gun-slinging, trash-talking DEA agent in charge of his department to a victim who can't so much as stand up or take a shit without help. He was not prepared for how "weak" and small this experience would make him feel. He likely wants to support Marie, but the tables have turned and now he is 100% dependent on her for survival. He feels like a toddler and you can SEE how much he hates this situation. Unfortunately, the one person who is a witness to his weakness is also the woman who loves him and so when he lashes out, he ends up hurting her, which is fucked up. It's just a completely fucked up situation all around.
@twichytail2 ай бұрын
I always saw Marie as the antithesis to Walter, walter was an innocent man turned into a killer drug lord, while marie was a lying shoplifter that turned into the most solid supporter of her family, while walter used his family as an excuse to feed his ego, Marie was the one to swallow her ego for the sake of her family.
